The Black Book; or, Corruption Unmasked! Being an account of places, pensions, and sinecures, the revenues of the clergy and landed aristocracy...the Civil List...the robbery of charitable foundations...the whole forming a complete exposition of the cost, influence, patronage, and corruption of the Borough Government
London: John Fairburn, 1820. First Edition. 1 vols. 8vo. Contemporary boards, black stained edges, rebacked and with new corners, some internal foxing, else a nice, crisp copy. First Edition. 1 vols. 8vo. "The Bible of the Reformers". The first edition of a book which led the battle for electoral reform in 19th Century England, being a compilation of the financial, political, ecclesiastical, and nepotistic abuses which were sustained under the institution of rotten and pocket boroughs, and which brought about the passage of the Reform bill of 1832. The Bill redistributed 143 parliamentary seats to industrial areas, providing more proportional representation, reducing the traditional powers of the large landowners and the aristocracy, and strengthening the British system of parliamentary democracy. Wade's fascinating exposé went into numerous editions, in which he named names, listed unearned compensations, pointed out abuses of patronage, the milking of foundations, political log-rolling, influence peddling and other conduct, all of which has a curiously modern ring. "Religion a trade, justice a trade, government a trade--all for money; nothing for the public good." A fierce and fascinating book. PMM 296; Kress C.638
