[TWO PARTIALLY PRINTED DOCUMENTS, COMPLETED IN MANUSCRIPT, CONCERNING FRANCOIS DE CHAUMONT, PRESIDENT OF THE FINANCE COMMITTEE OF THE COLONIAL ASSEMBLY]
Cap Français, 1793. Folio. Old folds, minor dust-soiling. Very good. Two partially-printed manuscript documents concerning François de Chaumont, president of the Finance Committee for the French government in Cap Français, Saint Domingue (present-day Cap-Haïtien, Haiti). The first of these is titled AU NOM DE LA REPUBLIQUE FRANCAISE. COMMISSISSION NATIONALE-CIVILE [printed].... It is a declaration by Léger-Félicité Sonthonax, Commissioner of the Republic in Saint Domingue, clearing François Chaumont, chairman of the Finance Committee of the erstwhile colonial assembly, of false charges against him regarding colonial expenditures. Sonthonax was a radical Jacobin, who sought to upturn what was left of Royalist right. He hoped to get rid of Chaumont. The second is titled AU NOM DE LA REPUBLIQUE. ADMINSTRATION GENERALE [printed].... (Le Cap Français. Sept. 1, 1793). It is an appointment of the same François Chaumont as Commissioner in charge of the Editorial Office of Audit, by Charles-Etienne-Pierre Wante, civil organizer of the French Leeward Islands. Chaumont managed to outlast Sonthonax, who was sent back to France. Here he gets another post from Wante, Sonthonax's successor.
