Contemporary sheep (rubbed, spine wormed, chipped at head & tail), gilt spine, [10]-333-[1] pp. (usual browning and spotting, wormtrack in 1st quires touching some letters). Good large paper copy. Very rare reprint (1st ed. Paris 1695) of a treatise on mechanics by La Hire (1640-1718). Woodcut illustrations and diagrams in text. Not in BL London, BN Paris - "Although passed over by the majority if the historians of mechanics, this work marks a significant step toward the elaboration of a modern manual of practical mechanics, suitable for engineers of various disciplines. On the theoretical plane, La Hire's treatise was already out of date at the time of its appearance because it ignored Newton's laws of dynamics... on the other hand... he furnished useful descriptions and put forth the suggestion following Desargues, of adopting an epicycloidal for gear wheels" (DSB)..
