THE HISTORY OF THE REBELLION AND CIVIL WARS IN ENGLAND, BEGUN IN THE YEAR 1641. WITH THE PRECEDENT PASSAGES AND ACTIONS, THAT CONTRIBUTED THEREUNTO, AND THE HAPPY END, AND CONCLUSION THEREOF BY THE KING';S BLESSED RESTORATION
Dublin: John Hyde and Robert Owen, 1719. First Dublin Edition. Full Leather. Very Good binding. The first great history of the English Civil War, in which Clarendon pushed his own views of royalist strategy. The first volume published in London in 1701 was a piece of a publishing war between the Roundheads and the Cavaliers. In the late 17th Century Roundhead memoirs from the Whigs enjoyed popularity, only to be countered by Sir Philip Warwick's memoirs and Clarendon's History. This is the First Dublin Edition, printed some 15 years later. Three small folio volumes in contemporary panelled calf, each with the engraved portrait of Clarendon, and the bookplates of William Bellingham, and Bellingham Castle. (ESTC T53944). Very Good binding.
