"...transformed an unsightly, malodorous drain into a place of delight". A fine tribute to the Bronx River Parkway, penned on New Year's Day, 1929, by the author of "The Man with a Hoe", then living in New York City:"Next to the home, the tree-lined road and the wayside bridge have ever been dear and near to the heart of man, So our own Bronx River Parkway - an enduring, tree-sheltered, all-serving road - will long give joy to our people. All gratitude and honor, therefore, to the engineers, landscape architects and gardeners who have transformed an unsightly, malodorous drain into a place of delight and romantic beauty - a place that not only speeds the wheels of commerce, but also is "A place where passing souls can rest "On the way, and be their best."[The final couplet is a quotation from Markham's own poem "A Prayer"].
