[LUND, John].
A Collection of original Tales, in Verse. In the Manner of Prior. To which is added, a second Edition of Ducks and Pease; or the Newcastle Rider. Together with the above Story in a Farce of one Act, as it was performed at the Theatre in Pontefract, with great Applause. And several other Originals never before published.
London: Printed for the Author, and sold by him and J. Lyndley, Bookseller, in Pontefract, 1777. 8vo (193 × 123 mm) in half-sheets, pp. [2], ii, [2], 7-103, [1]; loss of catchwords on I4, M1-3, and N3 (punched out by the type), lower corner of K1 torn away (loss to a couple of words on the verso), some foxing or other marks throughout, final leaf dust-soiled, old inkstamp of Wigan Public Libraries to title verso; recent wrappers. First edition of this collection, Ducks and Pease having first been published in 1776 (Huntington only in ESTC). Lund was apparently a barber from Pontefract, where a contemporary declared his satires 'would not disgrace the pen of a Churchill' (quoted in Oxford DNB). In his Preface, the poet apologises for the 'incorrectness' and 'strokes of obscenity' which characterised his earlier publications. 'Some People may be apt to say, I might better Emply my Time. If I neglected by Business for the Sake of scribling [sic], they might with Justice blame me; but I do assure them they are the Productions of my leisure Hours only... I please myself that, every unbias'd and candid Reader... will excuse my Errors, and be pleased with the Dish of Ducks and Pease I offer them, when I assure them, if I cou'd have cook'd and seasoned them better, to suit their Palates, I most certainly wou'd have done it.'
