Albany. June 24, 1758.. [1]p., addressed on verso. Folio. Old fold lines. Light soiling and wear, corners torn away, not affecting text. Good. Letter written by Elijah Huntington to his father, Isaac Huntington, from his military encampment at Albany. Elijah Huntington (1734-1814) was a native of Norwich, Connecticut who served several years during the French and Indian War, including on the final campaign to Montreal with General Amherst, where the French capitulated and essentially ended the fighting in North America. He would later live a quiet life as a farmer, though he did also serve in the Connecticut legislature. The present letter was written several weeks before the Battle of Ticonderoga, on July 8, in which Huntington took part as part of a large British, colonial, and allied Indian assault on the celebrated fort, held by the French at the south end of Lake Champlain. Despite the great numerical superiority of the British side, they failed to dislodge the French, and were driven off with heavy loss. This was still in the future as he wrote this letter about incidents of the campaign. He writes (all misspellings are his own): "Honoured father taking this opertunity to let you know that I am in good health and all our company excepting Ebenezer Roth that we left behind not very well. We arived at Albany the 22nd instant and sometime expect to march this after noon but to morrow morning at farthest (this minuit sd.
