Antoinette Moranges
Antoinette Moranges Patent for an Advanced Calculator in 1894
Synopsis: Original 1894 patent materials of Antoinette Moranges' "Presto Multiplicateur" calculator, which provides fast and accurate resolutions to complex computation problems. Contains over 20 handwritten and signed pages in French by Antoinette Moranges, including her detailed design descriptions, explanations of the calculator's functions and benefits, and hand-drawn diagrams, as well as a Document Signed granting Moranges her patent in 1894. Accompanied by an 1894 announcement of inventions that lists Moranges' calculator, and a 1914 calculator handbook that includes the Presto Multiplicateur among calculators still being actively used and sold by mathematicians.French mathematician and inventor Antoinette Moranges worked at a time when few women had the opportunity to gain advanced education in the field. Like her predecessor Ada Lovelace, however, Moranges had an interest in learning pure mathematics, and then applying her knowledge to the development of new technologies that ultimately laid the foundation for the modern computer. Recognizing the shortcomings of the existing Baton-de-Napier style calculator, which had been invented and little improved upon since 1617, Moranges designed a more advanced logarithmic calculator that she named the "Presto Multiplicateur," according to her patent because it provides economy of time for short calculations and guarantees against error in long operations. Using a moveable set of numbered slide rulers in a box, the Presto calculator formed tables to assist in the calculation of products, quotients, powers and roots.Moranges … [Click Below for Full Description]
