Title printed in red and black; woodcut arms on title; woodcut initials throughout. 18th-century speckled calf; gold-tooled spine (with wear at head of spine); sprinkled red-edged leaves; title printed in red and black. Lower outer corners of first seven leaves repaired (without loss of text); ink blots on E6-8; catchword shaved on L5; minor paper repairs on A7 verso and I2 verso; occasional early nota marks; early owner's name deleted on title; early inventory number 'C.1520' on title. ***** Resende’s life as poet, editor and chronicler was spent at the Portuguese court during the reigns of John II, Manuel I and John III - a period of splendour and achievement for the Portuguese crown. In 1498 he accompanied Manuel to Castile and in 1514 went to Rome with Tristão da Cunha, as secretary and treasurer of the famous embassy sent to offer the tribute of the East at the feet of Pope Leo X. Resende’s Crónica was first printed at Lisbon in 1545. Despite its frequent borrowings from a work by Rui de Pina, it contains personal anecdotes that give it special interest, especially into the social life and manners of the period.
