In Somnium Scipionis, Libri II eiusdem Convivorum Saturnaliorum Libri VII
Paris: [Henri Estienne], 1585. The copy of the Strasbourg scholar Matthias Bernegger, a friend of Galilei's and Kepler's8vo, (16, including blank leaf), 578 and (80) pages ; contemporary vellum. An important copy which belonged to Israel Spach and Matthias Bernegger with the latter's autograph ex-libris dated 1616 : "E bibli. D. Spachii transiit in Matthiae Berneggeri 1616" [see Bernegger's autograph ex-libris on his copy of Kepler's Harmonices mundi libri V, sold at Christie's in 2008].While this edition by Henri Estienne is rather common, this particular copy is of great interest because of its double Strasbourg provenance. The physician Israel Spach was one of the pioneers of scientific bibliography. In 1591 he published the first medical bibliography, Nomenclator scriptorum medicorum, and in 1597 a bibliography of philosophy, Nomenclator scriptorum philosophicorum. The philologist, historian, and mathematician Matthias Bernegger, born in Upper Austria, was educated in Strasbourg, where he developed a particular interest in astronomy and mathematics, and from where he corresponded with many illustrious scientists of his time, amongst others, Johannes Kepler and Wilhelm Schickard. Bernegger is known for his translation in 1612 into Latin of Galileo's work on the proportional compass and in 1635 of the Italian astronomer's Dialogo. Some autograph marginal notes and underlined words.A fine copy.
