Bemelmans, Ludwig
Portrait of Madeline
1898. Pen and ink and gouache on paper, signed "Bemelmans" (lower right). 10-1/4 x 9-3/4 in. Ludwig Bemelmans (1898-1962) was born in a part of Austria-Hungary that is now Italy. His first language was French, and his second German, and he emigrated to the United States before WWI, where he joined the Army, then worked in hotels. His early attempts at a career as a professional artist met little initial success, that was until his most famous book, Madeline, was finally published in 1939. Six Madeline picture books were published in total -- five in his lifetime, and one posthumously (a seventh story was published first in McCall's magazine). Each book begins: "In an old house in Paris, that was covered with vines, lived twelve little girls in two straight lines . the smallest one was Madeline." This colored image shows Madeline in her iconic blue-ribboned hat and is signed by Bemelmans.
