Printed for Thomas Dobson, Philadelphia, 1787. This ????Bristol imprint is the same year as two other imprints, priority undetermined. Very rare. The first edition was published in 1785. [6], 186, [2], 32, [2] pp. 12mo. Cowper, the "pensive poet" was greatly appreciated by the people of America. The Calvinistic moral tone combined with the realism and "old-fashion" ideas, as well as the poem's quotability, made it very popular. While the literary critics were not so quick to appreciate "The Task" the American reading public's response was similar to that of Franklin. In a letter to Cowper he writes that "the relish for the reading of poetry had long since left me, but there is something so new in the manner, so easy and yet so correct in the language, so clear in the expression, yet concise, and so just in the sentences, that I have read the whole with great pleasure, and some of the pieces more than once."
