Dickenson, Jonathan.
God's Protecting Providence... Evidenced in the remarkable Deliverance of Robert Barrow... and Also from the Devouring Jaws of the Inhuman Cannibals of Florida.
London: James Phillips, 1787. 12mo. 136 pp.. Sixth edition of one of the earliest and most famous American shipwreck accounts. Barrow was a Quaker missionary on route from Jamaica to Philadelphia. His ship, the "Reformation," wrecked off the Florida coast. The survivors were captured by Indians - characterized on the title page as INHUMAN CANNIBALS OF FLORIDA - and eventually made their way to Charleston. The first edition of this account was published in 1699. Though reprinted several times after its initial Philadelphia appearance, all early editions are scarce. This one is listed in Howes as an "aa." Howes D-317. Huntress 28C. See Servies 236. Paper repair to top of title page, no text effected. Otherwise very good copy, bound in full antique-style calf, with raised bands and spine label.
