Tang Wu Daozi pa hsien tu (Wu Daozi's Paintings of Eight Immortals). From the Collection of ??? (Bau He Temple)
n.p., NP, 1800. Quarto. Unpaginated. 11x7.5". Tan leporello, with handwritten calligraphy in black ink on the front cover. The work compiles prints featuring the mythological Eight Immortals, from famous Tang period artist Wu Doazi. Each print is accompanied by a poem about the immortal in calligraphy, decorated with gilt over-painting. The prints reproduce original artwork from the collection of Bau He Temple. One print has the signature of Wu Daozi at the bottom right corner. Leporello binding, broken in parts. Housed in a tan envelope. Covers with scratching, rubbing, light soiling and water staining. Corners and edges rubbed. Interior with foxing, scratches and some abrasions to the leaves. Binding in fair, interior in good- condition overall. *??? (Wu Daozi) of Daoxuan (680- circa 760 C.E.) was a famous Chinese artist of the Tang Dynasty, often considered one of the masters of that period. He was known for his work depicting various Buddhist and Taoist figures, as well as natural subjects. None of his original artwork survives, but he is known through numerous later copies of his work that have been made. * The Eight Immortals are a group of legendary figures in Chinese mythology, said to have lived during the Tang and Sung dynasties. They are revered in the Toaist tradition and are popular in Chinese culture. Each immortal wields a supernatural "power tool", which can grant life or destroy evil. [Attributes: Soft Cover]
