1850's Sketchbook with drawings, watercolors, and an early photograph
1852. Artist's travel sketches and other items assembled in a period scrapbook, 70 leaves, with leather spine over cloth covered boards; gilt lettering on spine reading "Sketches" and "E. D. Oakwood." We have not found any information about the artist. Mixed media album containing over 125 drawings, of various sizes, mainly sketches in graphite or watercolor; 10 plant samples, identified with location and date; a number of printed images, and 1 early photograph on paper. Sketches vary in degree of completeness. Inside cover has an image in graphite , ink and white gouache, captioned, "From the drawing room window, Bath Terrace, Lynemouth, Jan. 19, 1852." Artist traveled through England, France & Italy. Final leaf has plant sample marked Vaucluse 20 May 1855. Some items are loose, no doubt a few are lost; staining, toning, general wear, but overall in acceptable condition. Approx. 15" x 10" (Album size)
