Large archive of documents concerning the artistic legacy and fate of works by Hannes Meyer (1889-1954), of the Bauhaus Dessau
1889. Two large binders of A4 documents, each ca. 6 cm. of documents, including ALS, signed typescript, xerox copies, handwritten letter drafts, various ephemera and newspaper clippings. Overall very good. Two large binders of letters, receipts, newspaper clippings and legal documents connected with the legacy of Hannes Meyer (1889-1954), the second "unknown" director of Bauhaus Dessau in 1928-1930. The documents were assembled by Meyer's daughter Claudia Meyer and record her attempts to reshape her father's reception throughout the 1970s-1980s and post-communist period in the 1990s, with each era adding its own political complexities to the topic of his reception and "rehabilitation". The archive includes correspondence between Claudia Meyer and the Swiss author Werner Oechslin, Dr. Magdalena Droste (of the Bauhaus archive), Dr. Klaus Winkler, the author of a Meyer monograph, and numerous others. Of particular interest are a series of letters from Hans Maria Wingler (1920-1984), the founder of the Bauhaus-Archiv and its director until his death in 1984. Also included are letters from the 1970s between Claudia Meyer and the GDR Ministry of Culture, the heads of the DDR Museum des Bauhaus Dessau, and correspondence regarding the exhibit of Meyer's work at the Bauhaus archive in Berlin in 1989 and numerous other institutions. The earliest letters date back to 1962 and include correspondence between Meyer's first wife Natalie Meyer-Herkert and the Bauhaus archive requesting to borrow articles from the family's private collection and receipts for the lent items.
