NATHAN CLIFFORD (1803-1881). Clifford was a diplomat, Congressman from Maine, United States Attorney General, and Associate Justice of the Supreme Court. Autograph Journal Signed. 1839-1848. Approximately 110 pages in total; 62 pages of text. An autograph journal signed “Nathan Clifford” on the inside front cover. A journal relating to Nathan Clifford and Caleb Ayer’s Maine law practice. It records income, expenses, and clients for both the firm and for Clifford personally. “1839 Nathan Clifford in acs. with C. R. Ayer Nov 16 To cash by your wife 3.16 “ 22 “ “paid G. Some prominent names are mentioned throughout, such as Maine Governor Fairfield, Benjamin Webster and many others. Some of the entries many be in the hand of Clifford’s wife Hannah. Clifford was the Unites States Attorney General at the end of the time covered in the journal. He later became an Associate Justice of the Supreme Court.
