Hayden, F. V.
Twelfth Annual Report of the United States Geological and Geographical Survey of the Territories: a Report of Progress of the Exploration in Wyoming and Idaho for the Year 1878. in Two Parts Plus Atlas
Washington, D. C.: Government Printing Office. Very Good. 1883. First Edition. Brown government binding with gilt title on spine. Binding and condition better than usual for these massive volumes. Spine on Part 1 somewhat faded. Both volumes show light bumping to corners and rubbing to boards. Frontis and tissue in Part 2 is loosening with boards beginning to pull from spine. One signature loose in volume one. Several plates are incorrectly bound and one signature is bound upside down. All plates and maps fully collated with the exception of the Lower Geyser Basin map in volume 2 and one missing plate. Illustrated with in text figures, plus numerous lithographic plates and maps (some folding). These two volumes like many early government reports are simply remarkable in their breadth and scope. These volumes cover the Geology, Paleontology, Thermal Springs, and Topography of the Yellowstone area. The many many plates truly are beautiful works of art. This set includes the Atlas volume with all map as called for plus three additional maps, which is not uncommon with this set. Maps are generally in very good condition with typical small splits at corners and folds. The cloth folder for the maps is missing the tie and shows moderate wear to corners and at base of spine. Gilt on front of folder is sharp, only marred by a small stain. Truly remarkable set of early Yellowstone surveying. ; 8vo 8" - 9" tall; 809; 490 pp .
