Sheardown, 1814. 2 leaves [title page, contents], 29, [1, blank] pp; 1 leaf ["Appendix" half-title], 46 pp, 1 blank leaf, followed by "Report of the Committee of Inquiry into the Rules and Management of the York Lunatic Asylum": 8 pp, [7]-52 pp, 1 blank leaf. 19th century cloth, with hand-lettered paper labels on spine and on front cover. The spine label, which is chipped, reads: "York Tracts vol. vii". The label on the front cover lists the works in this sammelband (see photo). Signature of contemporary owner John Mason on general title page. Very Good. First Edition. The other three works in this sammelband are: 2. A Few Free Remarks. York: Printed by W. Blanchard and sold by J. and G. Todd et al., 1814. 14 pp, 1 blank leaf. 3. Vindication of Mr. Higgins. York: Printed by and for Wm. Hargrove and Co., 1814. 40 pages. Title page soiled, with signature of contemporary owner (J Mason/York). 4. Sir George STRICKLAND: A Letter: Second Edition. York: J. Sampson/ London: Whittaker, 1859. 31 pages. In 1815-1816 there was a Parliamentary Inquiry into Madhouses, which resulted in four reports in 1815 and three in 1816 by the Committee on Madhouses. The Committee was "appointed as a result of the pressure of public indignation following the revelations at York Asylum 1813/4 and at Bethlem Hospital 1814."
