Pius IX., Pope (1792-1878) - Signature as Pope matted with picture made of lace - Italian pope, born Giovanni Maria Mastai-Ferretti, who ascended the papal throne in 1846 and served until his death. Among the notable achievements of his 32-year reign, the longest in Roman Catholic Church history, Pius convened the historic First Vatican Council, which included the doctrine of papal infallibility. Fine signature "Pius PP. IX". Piece of paper mounted on a small card, 3.75 x 2.75 inch, signed in ink. On verso signature "Joseph Card. Prisco" (Giuseppe Antonio Ermenegildo Prisco, 1833 -1923, Italian Cardinal of the Roman Catholic Church, who served as Archbishop of Naples). First letter of Prisco signature missing. Matted with a fine picture of Pius IX., made of lace, 3.0 x 4.5 inch, with a PRINTED signature and date on verso. Handsomely matted in gray to an overall of 11.75 x 7.75 inch. Fine condition. Also included is a gold bordered card signed "Henry Edward Card: Manning Archbishop of Westminster Rome, Jan. 25, 1878". Card, 4.25 x 2.25, mounting residue on verso, else good condition.
