CREBILLON, Claude-Prosper Jolyot De.,]
Tanzai et Neadarne: Histoire Japonoise
Lou-Chou-Chu-La, Seul Imprimeur De Sa Majesté Chinoise Pour Les Langues Étrangères, Pekin, 1734. Two volumes in one. Twelvemo full period calf. [2] ?xx-[4]-266 [i.e 274, p. 89 to 96 repeated] p & [6] ? 436 ? [1]. First edition of this important satire of Cardinal de Rohan. Crebillon also satirizes the Unigenitus constitution, the Jesuits, the Pope and the Duchess of Maine. The setting is an imaginary and egalitarian country, where the only government and the only laws are those of pleasure, particularly that of the body. Crébillon was imprisoned at the Château de Vincennes following the publication of the work. The Duchess of Maine, referred to in the book, made him leave Vincennes and enter the Parisian salons. Outer joints and spine tips flaking. Binding sound and contents quite clean. A nice survival of an important work. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]
Bookseller: The Literary Lion, ABAA [Thousand Oaks, CA, U.S.A.]
