[Photo Album]: Allentown Nurses
Allentown, Pennsylvania, 1922. Softcover. Near Fine. Oblong small octavo. Measuring 7.5" x 5.5". String-tied flexible leather album with Native American illustration on the front cover. Contains 113 black and white or sepia-toned gelatin silver photographs measuring between ½" x ½" and 3½" x 5½", some with captions. Very good album with some loose pages, small chips, and rubbing with near fine photographs. A photo album following young nurses while they worked at the Allentown Hospital and during their leisure time. Allentown had a school for nurses and it is likely that these women were students and graduates who stayed on at the hospital. A note written on the inside of the back cover reads "from George to Emily June 16, 1922." One of the women is captioned as being Emily Trex. The album shows the women on the grounds of the hospital and at their homes. Women are seen in uniforms goofing off, playing records, and smiling for the camera. One photo shows a woman helping another woman climb a tree by pushing her backside. There are numerous group shots of the nurses on the hospital grounds and in the woods near the building. A male colleague is seen tucked into a too small bed with his legs sticking out of the end. Nurses and doctors are seen posed on the roof of the hospital smiling in each other's company. One photo shows the group during a procedure in the operating room. The women are also seen in the winter months with photos of them sledding and posed in the snow. A nice collection of photos detailing life at a hospital.
