RACKHAM, Arthur (illus.); CARROLL, Lewis.
Alice's Adventures in Wonderland. With a proem by Austin Dobson.
London: William Heinemann, and Doubleday Page & Co., New York, [1907]. Quarto (274 x 225 mm). Finely bound by Birdsall in green morocco, titles and decoration to spine gilt, raised bands, triple rule to boards gilt, inner dentelles gilt, marbled endpapers, top edge gilt, others untrimmed. With original spine and cloth covers bound in at back. Some minor spotting to a few leaves, some expert restoration to joints, scratch to front board repaired overall a very good copy. With 13 tipped-in colour plates as issued, captioned tissues, numerous black and white illustrations throughout. Published when the book came out of copyright in 1907, this deluxe edition was issued unsigned, as Rackham was out of the country at the time. For the first time, Rackham's plates were distributed at the appropriate places throughout the text, rather than gathered together at the end as they had been in Rip Van Winkle (1905) and Peter Pan in Kensington Gardens (1906).
