A Treatise containing the Practical Part of Fortification.
London: Printed for A. Millar, 1755. First edition. 8vo. 285x120. pp. xxiv, 304. 26 engraved folding plates. 8 Tables of measurements, four of them folding. Contemporary calf, rebacked, raised bands, tan morocco label lettered in gilt. Edges speckled red. Slight foxing to the title page but otherwise in excellent condition in a very good binding. ESTC locates 11 copies in UK and 8 in US. John Muller (1699-1784) was born in Germany, moving to London in 1736. In 1741 he was appointed deputy head of the Royal Military Academy, Woolwich, transforming the institution into a disciplined cadet academy. In 1754 he became first master of the Academy and was later appointed Professor of Artillery and Fortification (and "Preceptor of Engineering, etc. to his Royal Highness the Duke of Gloucester"); he retired in 1766.
