London: John Lehmann. 1950 and 1951. First edition, first printing of the author's first and second book. First edition, first printing of the author's first and second book. Both volumes in the publisher's original pink and brown textured cloth with titles in gilt to the spine, complete with their John Minton illustrated dustwrappers. With illustrations in black and white by John Minton throughout. In very good or better condition, the bindings square and firm, the contents with only the occasional light mark to the margin are clean throughout and without previous owner's inscriptions or stamps. The dustwrapper of Mediterranean Food is without loss or tears but a little rubbed and scuffed at the spine tips with some rippling and evidence of damp to the underside of the spine. French Country Cooking has small chips at the spine tips and fold corners (not affecting the titles) with a piece of tape to the underside at each end of the spine. Neither dustwrapper is price-clipped (10s 6d net and 12s 6d net respectively). An attractive set of Elizabeth David's culinary classics, still core texts and inspiration for aspiring cooks, seventy years on.
