A very good copy, the binding square and firm with a little shelf wear to the lower edge and mild toning of the spine. The contents with pertinent inscriptions to the front endpaper are otherwise clean throughout. Complete with the very lightly rubbed and nicked dustwrapper which remains without loss or large tears, the flaps with a little spotting to the edges. Not price-clipped ($2.00 to the upper front flap). A novel based on the author's work as screenwriter on the 1934 film "Little Friend", directed by Berthold Viertel and starring Matheson Lang and Nova Pilbeam. This copy inscribed by the director in blue ink on the front endpaper "To Arnold Weissberger / the most friendly helper / this book which contains / the satirical portrait / of a man I believe to know / even better than the genial observer / - and the whole period / in a nutshell - ! [underlined] / his grateful client / Berthold Viertel / New York / Oct 29, 1945". Further inscribed by the author in black ink "and to Arnold & Milton - / for reasons too obvious to / state - with great affection, / Christopher Isherwood". The recipient Arnold Weissberger was a photographer and influential entertainment lawyer who represented a host of artists and personalities including Laurence Olivier, Orson Welles, Truman Capote, Placido Domingo, Igor Stravinsky, John Gielgud, Anita Loos, Noel Coward and David O.
