Deborah Karl met Heller as a young girl through her father, the biographer and critic Frederick R. Karl, who was friends with the author and his wife Shirley. Frederick R. Karl wrote the oft-anthologized essay on the novel 'Catch-22: Only Fools Walk in Darkness.".
