Willis, N.P., Illustrated by Bartlett, W.H.
CANADIAN SCENERY ILLUSTRATED, Volumes I & II (First Printing, Peter Low Binding).
George Virtue, London, 1842. First printing of this historic set. In two volumes, pp.: 128, 116, engraved frontis portrait, engraved title pages, 117 steel engraved plates with tissue guards, 4to, complete original binding in full dark-brown morocco, extravagently embellished with gilt titles and decorations, aeg, original ribbon markers present. All plates and tissue guards present. Externally superb with almost no wear to extremities of binding of Vol. II, slight loss to the heel of Vol. I. No owner's marks, no creasing or tears to contents. No weakness to joints or hinges. Endpapers appear original, with binder's label "P. Low" (Peter Low, London & Boston a highly-respected binder of the day). Plates are excellent, clear, early strikes. Modest foxing to some plates (mostly to margins), most have little or no foxing. Gilt edges are extremely bright. Only significant flaw to contents is some dampstaining to the margins of the front flyleaf, frontis, illustrated and full-title of volume II. Aside from the dampstaining, one of the nicest copies we have seen, totally original and complete. Scans available. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]
