Harrap & Co., London. The First UK printing published by George Harrap & Co. Ltd in 1916 (nd). This title was issued in three editions : The Trade edition with standard grey cloth (priced at 20 shillings), a full leather edition( priced at 30 shillings) and a signed limited edition of 125 copies bound in vellum and priced at 3 Guineas. This book is the standard Trade edition and is in exceptional near Fine condition. A hint of pushing at the spine ends and a tiny bump to the upper front corner. Free from inscriptions and erasures, and internally clean. The binding is very tight and the gilt top edge remains very bright. The book is lavishly illustrated with 16 full colour plates mounted on heavy stock with captioned letter guards, 24 full page B/W plates plus many decorative tail pieces. All the plates and tissue guards are present and are in lovely condition. Harry Clarke's first illustrated book and very scarce as the UK true first printing more-so in this condition. Harry Clarke was an acclaimed Irish stained-glass artist and book illustrator who was born in Dublin and was a leading figure in the Irish Arts and Crafts Movement. He died tragically of TB at the early age of 42 years. 'Mr. Clarke brings to Hans Andersen an entirely fresh interpretation, and he appeals to the intellectual emotions of art-lovers, who will find in his work satisfaction of their craving for new and unconventional treatment of themes which may never be exhausted while the spirit of life exists in art.
