Some leaves bound out of order. ** Most curious is that signature C was printed on one side of the leaves only, resulting in 8 blank pages. but no loss of text. Age and damp stain and edge wear through much of the text, but not horridly impacting on the plate images. Very worn contemporary limp full vellum binding. 4to. 21.5 cm. Old manuscript and stamped ownerships. The FIRST ILLUSTRATED EDITION. The great illustrated Italian language edition of this famous and important source book for Renaissance artists and poets. They used its representations of the ancient gods and mythological figures as a model for their own works. The popularity and influence of Cartari's book continued through the seventeenth century. Valgrisi issued an almost identical edition at the same time. It is great sport comparing the two issues. "While Vincenzo Cartari's book Imagini delli Dei de gl'Antichi ('Images of the Gods of the Ancients') was neither the earliest nor the most erudite treatise on the Græco-Roman pantheon to be published in 16th Century Italy, in time it came to be the most popular and influential. The book focused on the iconography of the gods, explaining the guises in which they were portrayed, and detailing their several attributes and accoutrements.
