[St. Moritz, c. 1930].Original silver bromide photo (c 22.5 x 16.5 cm), on double-mount, signed by the artist on the mount; two small spots, otherwise very good. The Whims of Frost is a well composed photo of an typical winter landscape in the Engadin. Albert Steiner (1877 -1965), after having been apprenticed with various Swiss painters settled first as portrait photographer in Geneva in 1902 and then as photographer in St. Moritz in 1913, where he rose to fame as the Alpine photographic artist. The Swiss Fotostiftung (online) praises Steiner as 'one of Switzerland's outstanding 20th century photographers. His landscape photographs taken in the Engadine, where he lived and worked for 46 years, are unique on an international as well as a national level. They have had a major influence on an awareness of Switzerland as an unspoiled alpine country of surpassing beauty. Inspired by painters such as Giovanni Segantini and Ferdinand Hodler, Steiner took pictures that reveal a profound respect for and love of nature, as well as a tireless search for timeless beauty and metaphysical truth' (https://www.fotostiftung.ch/en/exhibitions/past/albert-steiner).#2107641
