PEAKE, Mervyn
Clown.
c. 1945. Oil on board, unsigned. Provenance: from Theo Waddington Gallery, c. 1980 probably sold by the Peake family at that time. Theo was the son of Victor Waddington who had a gallery in Dublin and later in London. Victor held a number of exhibitions of Peake's work in the 1950s. This painting was probably exhibited at Theo's exhibition of Peake's work in 1981. Peake painted a number of oils of clowns, some separate [as here], some in pairs, several with conical hats, a recurring theme. This slightly unsettling image is in excellent state, unsigned though with a sound provenance having Theo Waddington's label to the reverse.
