Histoire monastique d'Irlande. Où l'on voit toutes les abbayes, prieurez, convens, & autres communautez regulieres qu'il y a eu dans ce royaume, le temps & les titres de leur fondation, le nom & la qualité des fondateurs.
Paris: Louis Lucas, 1690. 12mo (156 × 90 mm), pp. [4], 96, 400, [42], final errata leaf. Woodcut ornaments. Some old marginal waterstains towards the end, with slight former adhesion at the head of the last two leaves (neatly repaired and not affecting text), a little dusty. Contemporary calf. Expertly rebacked to style. Early inscription to title: N. D. De Melevay'. A good copy. First edition. A very scarce monastic history and gazetteer of Ireland, dedicated to the royal family: James II, Mary of Modena and James Francis Edward, in exile at St Germain-en-Laye following James's final defeat at the Battle of the Boyne in 1689. After an initial historical essay there are entries for each individual house (male and female) arranged by county, ranging from a few lines to several pages. Alemand's work is the basis of the later (and more common) Monasticon Hibernicum (1722). The author was born to Protestant parents at Grenoble in 1653, abjuring his faith and becoming a Catholic in 1676 . Order directly from our website for free shipping worldwide.
