(iv), 126pp. Illustrated with a hand-coloured vignette on the title page and 20 full-page hand-coloured plates by F.P.Stephanoff. A collection of descriptions of a number of British cultural pastimes written by the English topographer and antiquarian Edward Brayley. Some of the pastimes described are still popular today, but many are now strange curios of bygone days such as Bull Baiting, Cock Fighting, Exorcism, Whipping the Cock (literally!), The Chimney Sweeper's Dance and Selling a Wife (also literally!). The volume also includes an early description of the game of Football. Bound in contemporary full mottled calf with gilt decoration and lettering to the spine. Sympathetically rebacked with the original spine laid down. Occasional light to moderate foxing and mild staining to a few text pages throughout the volume. Mild foxing and soiling to the margins of a few of the plates. Staining to the upper corner of the title page. Overall, a reasonably clean copy with the text block sound and the binding in good condition. Further photographs are available on application.
