Chyloong. Dealer in Sweetmeats.
Canton, 1851. One leaf, 20 x 17 cm, crudely printed. A remarkable preserved example of local printing commissioned by a long standing manufacturer of sweetmeats and supplier for export defending the quality of his product and alerting his clients to attempts to palm off inferior products as if they were his. The market was lucrative. An 1883 trade report records that $230,000 worth of Canton preserves and sweetmeats were exported, mostly to Britain and America. The text reads: Chyloong Dealer in Sweetmeats; and All Kinds of Canton Preserves. No.34. Old China Street. Notice. An attempt has been made by a person in Hong Kong to palm off upon per- -sons purchasing sweetmeats for Export an inferior article upon which he places my name in order to deceive those who may purchase thereby injuring my for- -mer reputation. This is to inform my old customers that there has been no change made in my manufacture from the former ones and that my sweetmeats can be obtained at no other place than where it has been made for the past 50 years at No.31, Old China Street. Parties residing abroad should be particular when giving orders to purchase of no others who may bear my name as they are of inferior quality. Canton, 30 December, 1851.
