        Civilization and Climate.

Brooklyn, New York:: Brian Dettmer,, 2016.. One-of-a-Kind. 9.25 x 6.375 x 1.5" altered book. Materials: acrylic varnish, museum glass. Signed by the artist. Nicholas Martin, Charisma of the Book: "Dettmer creates artworks through a transformation of often used or discarded books. At turns these sculptural works isolate, alter, expand, and repurpose elements of the source material, but the works' engagement with the idea of the book transcends the mere fact of their composition. "Dettmer often begins his practice by sealing a book with varnish, then carving away page by page: a process which invokes both reading and metamorphosis. ... Dettmer's works often surprise through what they reveal of a book.

String Bean Theory: Lessons on Nature's Economy.

[Chatham, New York]:: Williams James Association,, 2016.. Edition of 5. 11 x 11.5 x 2.25" custom box containing book and four groups of beans. Four 2 x 2: 1.4" holes contain dried beans: Blue Lake Snap; Kentucky Wonder; Scarlet Runner; and Purple Podded. Finger hole for pulling book from container. Paper title label on lid. Handwritten paper title labels in each bean housing. Materials: Prismacolor pencil; papers - Arches Cover, Color Aid, Crane's soft white 28 lb. text, methyl cellulose paste paper; Charbonnel Aqua Wash etching ink; Jade 403 PVA Glue; Acid free Binder's board; Canapetta linen bookcloth; Asahi silk bookcloth. Book: 6 x 6" closed; origami fold. Bound in green cloth boards. Printed on an HP Envy 7640 with Garamond Premier Pro font. Signed and numbered by the artist. The origami structure can either be read (carefully) by working through the folds or exposed as a growing, twisting, climbing vine (like, not surprisingly, a string bean vine). Beth Thielen: "Artist books are so often magical in the way they open. My book 'String Bean Theory' has a kinetic aspect. ? the spiraling up of the pages like a bean vine up a pole. The box serves as a plot of earth complete with bean seeds that the book grows up out of. Fully open, the book stands almost as tall as the person holding it. Just as my study of my pole beans unfolded a world of thoughts in me, I made the book to grow and unfold for the viewer. To be a presence?a dance partner, a sibyl. "The edition of 5 is variant with all the drawings original in each. Making 5 books echoes an early American planting rhyme: 'One for the bug, one for the crow, one to rot, and two to grow.' A working artist is a farmer that knows such odds. "It uses a repeated Japanese fold glued up to form a spiral when opening. The book had to spiral open. The spiral is nature's way of both defying gravity and through phyllotaxis, allows each leaf its own share of sunlight. It illustrates how cooperative and democratic nature is.

Les Fruits Defendus (Forbidden Fruit). Ten poems and Ten Mezzotints by Judith Rothchild

Verdigris Press, [Octon, France] 2016 - One of 10 regular copies, from a total edition of 20 copies, all 20 on Hahnemuhle paper for the mezzotints and Rives BFK for the text. Page size: 15 x 13-3/4 inches; plate size: 7-3/4 inches square; 20pp. + colophon and titlepage, dedication by the author and frontispiece. Bound: loose as issued housed in custom-made green paper over boards slipcase by Mark Lintott; paper label on spine with title and author and artist's names. The front panel has paper that is an original silkscreen of apples in a darker green than the light green base. This design is repeated on the frontis with the apples in light green on the light grey of the Rives BFK. Fruits included are: pear cactus, zucchini blossom, pomegranate, almond, watermelon, star fruit, pattypan squash, Japanese persimmon, durian, and bitter cucumber. Marie Rouanet's graceful essays on the unusual fruits depicted herein are intellectually playful, as befitting the double entendre title. Mark Lintott has printed the text in Vendome romain on a 1934 Vandercook press in light grey, with the page numbers debossed in blind on the bottom of the text pages. The colophon is shaped - an apple with the title, LES FRUITS DEFENDUS, as the apple's stem. Both the author, Marie Rouanet, and the artist have signed the colophon page. Ms. Rothchild's mezzotints of these fruits are mysterious - dark and velvety - and beautifully intriguing. This subtle book is exceptionally well-thought out and works admirably as a whole. It has been ratified by 35 states, leaving it 3 states short of the 38 needed for ratification. It has been reintroduced into every Congress since that time. The eight women who are featured on these pages are closely associated with the cause of equal rights for women. Included are: Abigail Adams, Elizabeth Cady Stanton and Susan B. Anthony, Shirley Chisholm, Alice Paul, Hillary Rodham Clinton, Ruth Bader Ginsburg and Patricia Arquette. Each of their images is collaged onto a page spread along with text associated with their work for women's rights and a postage stamp image - Wonder Woman for Justice Ginsburg and Patricial Arquette. STILL NEEDED, the book's title refers to Alice Paul's statement, "We shall not be safe until the principle of equal rights is written into the framework of our government." STILL NEEDED? Now more than ever! [Attributes: Signed Copy; Hard Cover]

        The Walk

Messenger Press, North Adams, MA 2016 - Artist's book, one of 25 copies, all on Rives BFK, signed and hand-numbered on the colophon by the artist / author, Valerie Carrigan. Page size: 8 x 6-3/4 inches, 14pp. Bound by the artist / author: accordion fold laid loose into brown cloth over boards portfolio with offset lithograph image inset on front panel, housed in brown cloth over boards slipcase with tan paper label on spine, author and title printed in brown, lined with litho of arabesque line and seed pods. The author / artist printed the text on a Vandercook Universal I while Book Artist in Residence at Maine Media Workshops in Rockport, Maine. Ms. Carrigan's monotypes were printed as offset lithos by Amanda D'Amico at the Borowsky Center for the Arts, University of the Arts, Philadelphia. Carrigan's own text was set in Garamond Roman and Adobe Garamond Pro for the excerpts from the journal of Henri-Frederic Amiel. Additional printing completed at Peter Kruty Editions and Horton Tank Graphics. Ms. Corrigan's simple text centers on a mother walking daily with her young daughter, discovering a field of milkweed, and waiting for the seed pods to open. Childhood wonder at the pods opening and dispersing their cargo via the wind is captured with words and with the lovely, black and white monoprints. The "walk" is opened and closed by Amiel's text, starting, "Let mystery have its place in you." and closing with, "Sacred work of nature it is." Three strong visual images of the milkweed, in particular close-ups of the ephemeral seed pod, are compelling, as is text, the maternal advice to the young child counseling patience.         names name no lasting name.

Pittsboro, North Carolina: Blue Bluer Books, 2016. Pittsboro, North Carolina:: Blue Bluer Books,, 2016.. One-of-a-Kind. 16.25 x 13"; 8 pages. Brush calligraphy and sumi ink wash with gold ink detail, on heavy mulberry paper. Inkjet prints printed with an Epson SureColor P600 on Red River premium matte inkjet paper. Stab binding with sisal twine. Laid in four-flap portfolio with titles. Signed and dated by the artist. Josh Hockensmith: "Josh Hockensmith: "names name no lasting name is a one-of-a-kind artist's book exploring the Taoist idea of the slipperiness of language, which informs a lot of my work. Each page-spread features a word in large brush calligraphy on the verso page, which I've burned away with an incense stick. The recto of each spread is a thick sumi ink wash, with flecks of gold ink handpainted to fill in the white gaps in the brush strokes. Each page also features a hidden printed image, nested inside the french-folded paper."The theme of the inadequacy of language and its willful misuse seems to become more vital every day. To get a randomized cross section of words that were in the air when I was creating the book, I selected one word for each page by taking the first noun from a sequence of reader comments on the New York Times website. I created the hidden prints by doing a Google image search on each of the words, downloading the first result, and digitally manipulating it into a new image and print. Parts of the prints show through on each page where the words have been burned away.

        day and fog

Buenos Aires: Mado Reznik, 2016. Buenos Aires:: Mado Reznik,, 2016.. Editioin of 10. 13.75 x 17 x 1.5" custom box with cavities for etchings and the book. Four 4.75 x 6.75" etching windows with roll up shades on dowels. Book: 8.5 x 11", 14 leaves; lightweight paper covers; perfect bound; cord lift and tie. Materials: paper, ink, cloth. Theresienstadt, a concentration camp established by the SS during WWII near the city of Terezin in occupied Czechoslovakia, was the showplace camp gussied up by the Nazis after D-Day for a visit by Danish and International Red Cross officials. The intent was to dispel notions of exterminations camps. This work commemorates the artist's recent visit to what remains of the camp.Mado Reznik: "day and fog is part of a journey taken several years ago. It comes from a survey about the Terezín ghetto in the Czech Republic, where art was legally promoted by Nazis but also [pursued] illegally by the prisoners. Terezín was the chosen ghetto to be shown by the Nazis as a tactic to oppose the world opinion about the horrendous and dreadful conditions of the camps. And, so to a certain extent art was promoted and even a huge library of more than 50,000 books was assembled. Both adults and children were involved in survival not only trying to get enough food and warmth but also literature, visual arts, music, theater, philosophy. "My own personal pictures taken at the ghetto have been transformed into photo etchings. Paper rolls intend to express what we remember but sometimes tend to ignore as if meaning has been compartmentalized. Poems express part of the story in a voice that transcends my own voice. I have chosen different types of paper for that objective: Japanese, Mexican, and Nepal.

TIRAGE A 8 EXEMPLAIRES SEULEMENT. [Attributes: Hard Cover]
