        The Telling

New York, NY, 2016. Unique artist's book, acid free paper over wood box plus acrylic hand-painted fabric over an inserted box set into interior of larger box, plus pop up card, "The Band Played On" inserted into hand-painted envelope affixed to back panel which slides from envelopes, signed on the back (among other places) panel of box "Sandra Jackman 2016" with the title, THE TELLING, stamped in red and black in various sizes scattered over box, front panel with blank shadow box made of smoke-painted wood, with plastic window box fastens with brass pin and chain through tiny brass hinge. Page size: 8 x 10-1/2 x 2 inches (closed) 16-1/2 x 10-1/2 x 1-1/2 inches (open). Box and interior, including pop-up card on back panel, and interior collage and book in box all imagined and created by Sandra Jackman using mixed media, archival inks, Jade adhesive, wire, beads, and photos, a clay head. The inserted box, titled "Soundwaves Radiate / Alarms Going Off" is removable from nesting place and opens to reveal a narrative poem which also bears the legend, "There is no evidence of this." Beneath the collage on the inside front cover is the text relating the 1965 murder of a Barnum and Bailey clown, Paul Jung, in Manhattan. Barnum and Bailey also features in the 1944 tragic fire at their circus performance in Hartford, CT. The body of a little girl was an unclaimed victim - among the very many child and adult victims. After the 1944 fire, the Barnum and Bailey clown, Paul Jung, created an act called "Fireman Save My Child." His murderer wielded the brass end of a fire hose as his weapon of choice. The artist / author states, "I want to encourage an interplay in the reader's mind between the events / images reflected in THE TELLING. The reader has the opportunity to construct their own conclusions about the incidents from the visual and textual elements that have been introduced. I restricted straightforward narrative in favor of portraying what might seem incongruous and disorienting relationships. This world is filled with plot and sub-plot and implications." She further quotes Joyce Carol Oates, "The ostensible subject out there is but the vehicle or pretext for the ravishing discoveries to be made in here in the act of creating." For Ms. Jackman, "the circus, it seems, is surrounded by an allure of mystery bordering on myth. In the face of misfortune there is the heroic cry of the show must go on." A most unusual and compelling visual statement about the bizarre world of the circus and clowns.

3 in Search of the Universe: Rumi, Walt Whitman and the Voyager Spacecrafts Wonder at the Quest

Foolsgold Studio, Vashon, WA 2016 - Artist's book, one of 10 copies, from a total edition of 12 for sale, 10 regular, 2 deluxe (Sold Out), pages on polyester film and various metals and binders board, each copy signed by the artist, Donald Glaister, on the colophon. Page size 14 x 12 inches; 32pp. Bound by the artist: textured and painted paper over boards, hand-sewn with each page on tabs to allow complete opening of each page spread, black morocco spine, with sanded aluminum insets on front and back panels; title indicated by three parallel cut-outs in the aluminum inset on front panel suggesting a counting system, housed in custom-made black cloth clamshell box. The text is letterpress printed in Filosofia in various point sizes, on aluminum and polyester sheets done from photopolymer plates by Jessica Spring at Springtide Press. The drawn images are silkscreen printed on aluminum and individually painted by the artist, Donald Glaister, who designed and produced the edition, assisted by Gabby Cooksey. The texts are Zahra Partovi's thoughtful, elegant translation of VERSES (1986) by Jalaluddin Mohammad Rumi, a 12th century Persian mystic poet, published by Vincent FitzGerald and Company and the verse of Walt Whitman from the 1855 edition of LEAVES OF GRASS, starting, "I celebrate myself." The colophon / artist's statement tells us that this book is dedicated to the memory of Don Moore, Senior Engineer on the Voyager Spacecraft Project, the late brother of Donald Glaister's wife, artist Suzanne Moore. Aside from the family ties, the two Don's were close friends. The artist, Donald Glaister, writes, " 3 IN SEARCH OF THE UNIVERSE is a celebration of the search for what is beyond: beyond what we see, what we think we see, and what we know we don't see. Rumi, Whitman, and the Voyager project all were instruments of this 'grand quest.' The writers wondered at the immensity and the universality of being. The scientist gave Voyager the physical form to that wonder. It fuels our wonder still."The book begins with couplets from Rumi, letterpress printed on textured aluminum with painted accents. The effect is ethereal and timeless, as are the couplets themselves. After the Rumi pages begins a sequence of amorphous, darkly painted, textured pages with angular cut-outs that reveal hard-edged industrial forms of plastics and metals beneath. From the fold of each of these page spreads emerges a translucent page of poetry, excerpted from Walt Whitman's LEAVES OF GRASS. These seemingly incongruous elements make perfect sense given the theme of the book in general and the theme of Whitman's poetry in particular.Interspersed are the cut-out / Whitman page spreads and images reminiscent of engineering drawings painted on brushed aluminum. The aluminum paintings increase in complexity as one moves through the book. These paintings reflect the indefinite process of human creativity: the hard work as well as the flashes of inspiration that allow parts of an idea to appear fully formed in the searcher's mind. They are the visual ecstasy of "the quest." The aluminum paintings are visually oriented to the Voyager part of the trilogy but are equally applicable to the Rumi and Whitman facets as well. Man has, from the very beginning, dared to search not only his immediate environs but the immensity of all he can imagine. It is in that exploration that human beings discover themselves, as is so poignantly detailed by Rumi and Whitman. Donald Glaister's art brings us, breathtaking page by breathtaking page, to the edges of what we know of the universe, with flashes of illumination amidst the darkness, and then brings us back to the light in each of us. As well as a beautiful book, perfectly crafted, this is a profoundly moving book. To open the pages is to embark on the journey, experience the exhilaration of discovery, wonder, and joy!         Hey Diddle Diddle

Albuquerque, NM, 2016. Artist's book, one in a series of 6, all on green and brown Italian book cloth and oriental papers, "book" is covered with assorted cloth which the artist made into book cloth, signed on the colophon (behind a closed door) by the artist, Elizabeth McKee. Size: closed 8.75 x 13 x 4 inches; open 9 x 26 x 10 inches. Housed in green cloth over boards custom-made clamshell box 9 x 14? x 5 inches including small drawer for spare batteries in the foredge of the top tray (batteries for light to shine through window illuminating the stained glass spoon). Hidden magnets used for closures throughout the book. The text and titles were printed on a Vandercook press on Rives BFK paper. The titles and poem were later embellished with watercolor painted on by hand. The artist's statement reads, "In December 2006, while living in Moscow, Russia, I bought some raffle tickets at the International Women's Club Annual Christmas Bazaar. Rather than the hoped for airline tickets to someplace warm, I won a set of six stained glass enamel spoons from the workshop of Yevgeny Butenko - valued at $70 - and with them, a question: 'What does one do with a set of six stained glass enamel spoons?' I hope you enjoy my answer."In the first opening of this stage set / book, one of the teaspoons is transformed into Spoon, the heroine of the poem, "Hey Diddle Diddle," dressed in her traveling cloak and waiting for the dish, Wally, to come spirit her away. On the wall to her left is a poster advertising Cat's concert. Beyond that, outside the window, Bessie the cow is jumping over the moon and a small hyena that Wally kidnapped to create a diversion is laughing plaintively. On the small table is a note from Wally confirming the time the time of his arrival, and in the drawer we find a tiny copy of the poem which celebrates this night. ("Hey, diddle diddle, The cat and the fiddle, The cow jumped over the moon. The little dog laughed, to see such sport, And the dish ran away with the spoon.") In the window behind Spoon a small light helps to illuminate her stained glass features. Turning the stage set / book around, we find the epilogue of the tale, a literary invention by Ms. McKee which is at once playful and effecting. The actors have been given histories beyond the nursery rhyme. Spoon is transformed from a young, romantic eloper into a tragic heroine trapped in the memory of her great adventure. Around the corner to the left of the epilogue is a small door, behind which is the colophon. Ms. McKee has taken this popular English nursery rhyme dating back to at least the sixteenth century and interpreted it here as a book / stage play with all the strange elements taking roles as characters in the action. This verse is most probably nonsense, but here the anthropomorphized elements become characters in a "theatre of the absurd" production, perfectly executed and beautifully presented with wit and charm, not to mention skill. Spoon's furry traveling cloak is a very clever fashion statement! A most beguiling interpretation of one of the most well-known children's verses in the English language.

        Shadowland

Foolsgold Studio and Springtide Press, [Vashon, WA and Palo Alto, CA] 2016 - Artist's book, one of six copies, all on black Revere paper, each copy unique with a variation of the final Cibachrome print (Winged Grief), each copy signed and numbered by the artist / poet, Jacqueline Thurston, on the colophon. Page size: 15 x 13.5 inches; 28pp; 4 of which are gate-fold. Bound by Donald Glaister, assisted by Gabby Cooksey, the pages on tabs to allow for complete opening of each page spread, full black goatskin with two recessed panels, one 9-1/8 x 3-7/16 and the other 9-1/8 x 2-7/16 inches, each abstract design composed of onlaid black triangles in stingray and ostrich, water snake and goatskin, mesh edging (gold and silver), the base of the panels in a sanded and "ruffled" steel-grey leather, title blind stamped on spine, doublures of cork dyed black (by Suzanne Moore), headbands with gold bordered by black on top and silver bordered with black on bottom, signed by the binder on lower rear turn-in with this customary gold dot, housed in custom-made black cloth over boards clamshell box, lined with black felt, title in black on paper label, grey shaded to black, with author / photographer and date. The text comprises two poems and two written reflections by Jacqueline Thurston, formatted and letterpress printed by Jessica Spring at Springtide Press in Mrs. Eaves type, printed in light grey, from photopolymer plates. The book was elegantly designed by Donald Glaister, Jessica Spring, and Jacqueline Thurston. The four images, each 9.25 inches square, are Cibachrome (ilfochrome) prints, a dye destruction positive-to-positive photographic process where the print is made on a dimensionally-stable polyester base, using silver metals. Produced in a restrained, elegiac palette of black, gray, and silver, SHADOWLAND opens with "Night of Shadows," a celebration of the enigmatic nature of dreams and a close encounter between Earth and Mars that occurred in the summer of 2003. It closes with "Winged Grief," a tribute to the artist's mother. Shells and stones, skeletons, lichen and pods, compose the haunting, shimmering images. This is a stunning book - at once personal yet universal in appeal. The use of black paper and grey type could have resulted in a much darker book, but it didn't. The design and images positively glisten and the reader / viewer is completely engulfed in the wonders of the natural world - through the artifice of text and images. A splendid book!Jacqueline Thurston is an artist, writer, and Professor Emerita at San Jose State University. She is twice the recipient of a National Endowment for the Arts Fellowship and was a Fulbright Scholar to Egypt. Thurston's photographs are in major national and international museum collections, including the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art; the Library of Congress; the International Museum of Photography; the Carnegie Museum of Art; the Los Angeles County Museum of Art; the Cantor Museum; the University of New Mexico Museum of Art; the Center for Photography at Arizona University; the Bibliotheque Nationale, France; and the Bibliotheque Alexandria, Egypt. Donald Glaister, noted American binder, also recognized for his artist's books, is the Director of the American Academy of Bookbinding.         Running Towards Us

Rockport, ME 2016 - Artist's book, one of 14 copies, all on Rives BFK white paper for the text and wrappers, (also available in Stonehenge Pearl Grey); the 16 original 10 x 10-inch C-prints printed on Kodak Endura luster paper to archival standards and mounted using acid free archival adhesive. Page size: 13 x 11-3/8 inches; 24pp. including colophon and titlepage. Bound by the artist: accordion-style book that can be displayed in one long line or opened and read as a traditional codex. The cover is Rives BFK White wrap-around featuring a hand-cut paper title by artist Hannah Berta and an original silk screen print by Claire Donelly of Fox Island Printers, North Haven, Maine in bright pink, showing through the hand-cut title on front cover; housed in custom-made buff cloth over boards clamshell box by Richard Smith of Camden, Maine. The text consists of 6 vignettes written by the artist, printed letterpress in a soft-grey archival ink by Fox Island Press, North Haven, Maine. Cig Harvey calls this book a love story that reveals the mysticism in the mundane. Her photographs and words explore the passage of time and show that home is wherever you look for it. We become invested in the unfolding story of a home, a marriage and motherhood. The artist's photographs appear to be at twilight or dawn - a mystical time with the natural world at its most beautiful. The images are as much the unconventional, compelling narrative as the text. Not simply a collection of images interspaced with words, this is a complete book with the images taking up the telling of the story when the text leaves off. Ms. Harvey is correct: this is a love story but one that could only be told by an artist of her intensity and capability. The third (and yet complete in and of itself) in (perhaps) an ongoing autobiographical series, this is an astonishing book - at once an intimate view of an artist's life and the universal beauty of the natural world, color and shape, and love. While her images are redolent of the Maine coast, they are universal.Noted photographer, Cig Harvey's work has been exhibited widely and is in the permanent collections of major museums, including the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, and the International Museum of Photography, George Eastman House, Rochester, NY. She was a finalist in Prix Virginia, an international photography prize for women, and had her first solo museum show at The Stenersen Museum, Oslo, Norway, in the spring of 2012 in conjunction with the release of her monograph You Look at Me Like an Emergency.       Denver, Colorado:: Studio SML/k,, 2016.. Edition of 30. 5.25"W x 7.5"D x 5.5"H case made with binder's board, a photographic filter, book cloth, tyvek, leather, tassels, magnetic closure, and Kodak film spools. Includes pamphlet (6" x 4"; 8 pages; sewn binding) with an essay by Joshua Bergeron. 33 double-sided photo panels with tyvek binding. Tassels attached for handling panels. 27 instagram photos inkjet printed in a scroll called KolCutta Travel Mag. Signed and numbered by the artists. Sammy Lee: " Maya-bheda is the second collaboration on India with Boulder based photographer Joshua Bergeron. The images were taken in October 2015, during the Bengali holiday of Durga Puja, in the capital of West Bengal - Kolkata, India. Using a combination of images from an iPhone as well as a conventional digital point-and-shoot camera, images were captured candidly within the documentary and street photography genre. The construction of the case and interior components are based upon the design of the original Kodak camera released in 1888, by George Eastman, which in many ways brought portable photography to the masses. "In Hinduism, the term M?y?-bheda refers to the destruction of perceived reality. The book serves as a vehicle to examine the assumptions and perceived realities of India for both Bergeron and me. The cameras used for images and the graduated orange lens on the outer shell of the book explores the notions of how India is interpreted by optical tools. For viewers, the interactive viewing experience of the book will offer a chance to examine their own perceived realities of India."

        Boven Kamers

Amsterdam: Moon Brouwer, 2016. Large quarto. From an edition of 50 copies, this is one of ten that has been translated to English and specially bound by Elbel Libro Boven Kamers (literally "upper rooms" in Dutch, a colloquial expression meaning brain), is an exploration of the human brain in the form of a pop-up book, by the Dutch designer and publisher Moon Brouwer. With its six laser cut pop-ups, Boven Kamers walks you through the different parts and functions of the human brain. The pop-ups start with the oldest, deepest regions where the most basic functions are situated, such as the control of breathing and heartbeat. They then move into the specializations of the left and right hemispheres. Finally the cortex, the outer layer of the complex functions like planning, reading, and writing, is revealed. The pop-up models in the book are true to size and give, together with the explanation and information, a spectacular insight into the different regions of the human brain. The book is specially bound so that when opened, the spreads rise above the binding until totally flat, thus allowing the pop-ups to fully unfold. The spine is lined with black Japanese paper, and the boards are covered in printed bookcloth. Housed in a paper chemise. As new.

        Aurora Teardrops - Deluxe Edition

Vancouver: Heavenly Monkey. Fine+. 2016. Limited Edition; First Printing; Signed by Author. ** This book is NOT yet available for shipment. We will process your order but not charge your credit card until we obtain the book from the publisher, later in the year The Deluxe Edition (7.5 x 10 inches, approx. 65 pages including prints) will be 26 lettered copies, of which 20 will be offered for sale. There also will be eight numbered hors de commerce copies for contributors. Six two-page color reproductions of Jane Maru’s batik paintings, printed on semi-transparent vellum, will be interleaved among the text pages. Each copy will also include an original frontispiece watercolor painting by Jane. The Deluxe copies will be signed by Harold Budd, Jane Maru & David Sylvian. Handbound in clear Plexiglass boards with slipcase (details to follow); Harold started writing the 59 poems that form Aurora Teardrops during his first collaboration with artist Jane Maru: a collection of her short films and his accompanying scores, entitled Jane 1-11. It was, however, her batik paintings on silk that he first encountered, and it is these batiks that form the vibrant visual core for Aurora Teardrops. Heavenly Monkey publisher Rollin Milroy worked with Harold and Jane for over two years on the book’s content and design, experimenting with (and discarding) a variety of ideas before settling on what all three felt was the right combination of materials, methods and presentation. Like all Heavenly Monkey books, Aurora Teardrops is printed letterpress. While letterpress is not uncommon among the today’s small- and fine-press publishers, Heavenly Monkey is one of just a handful of studios that print from a traditional handpress – nothing is automated: everything, including inking the type, is done by hand. This is not a token exercise in antiquarianism: we use a handpress because only it offers the flexibility to achieve the best possible results. The poems and introductory texts have been set in Cancelleresca Bastarda, a widely-admired face designed by Jan van Krimpen in the 1930s and briefly available in metal from the renowned Enschede foundry. It has not, however, been cast in many decades, and what few old fonts remain usually are worn and lacking the many alternate characters van Krimpen created. Aurora Teardrops is set in the first digital version of Cancelleresca Bastarda, created by typographer Pablo Impallari, and printed from polymer plates (i. e. rather than metal type, it is printed from polymer type; the letterpress process is otherwise exactly the same). Interleaved throughout the book are six of Jane Maru’s batik paintings, reproduced in full color on traditional drafting vellum, a semi-transparent sheet that creates a visual effect similar to the original works on silk. Being semi-transparent, these prints both interrupt and overlay Harold’s poems, creating an interaction between the two artists similar to their live musical performances of the Aurora Teardrops poems. Each of the Deluxe copies also includes, as a frontis, an original watercolor painting by Jane .

        Armoire.

Dallas, Texas:: A Bee Press,, 2016.. One-of-a-Kind. 11 x 9.5 x 2.75" closed wooden box containing two mounted photos, two accordion books, and one scroll book. Materials: mahogany, metal, fabric (cotton), commercial papers (cotton rag), thread, batting, graphite. Digital printing and imagery using inkjet and Gil Sans Light font. Handwriting. Signed by the artist. Alisa Banks: "Many pre-twentieth century homes lacked built-in closets, and furniture, such as armoires and dressers and cabinets, was used to store clothing. Closets, by their very nature are memory keepers - even in the sparest environment they reveal something about the owner. In cases where generations of owners have stored items for safekeeping, the closet functions as a historical record. This piece features photos of clothing and stories spanning several generations. "As a child, the opportunity to peek into my grandmother's armoire was exhilarating - her armoire, like all closets, seemed intensely personal and off limits. A look was usually accompanied by a story that brought to life persons unknown but not forgotten. Years later, my grandmother long gone, the armoire remains a repository of memory, culture, history, and tradition. "Although the shape of the box structure differs from the original armoire, and 19th-century mahogany differs from that of present day, the work is made of the same type of wood (mahogany) as the original and is fashioned with double doors and a locking mechanism with a skeleton key, also as the original.

Mostly it wasn't tourism, but education, family, and work that led me to reside in different places and learn the customs, culture, and language. Wanderlust is deeply ingrained in my psyche and is what feels natural to me. "The idea of conveying the constant wonderment of experiencing places in an artist book was deeply appealing to me. We understand a new place with our mind, our feet, and our eyes. So I made On the World elemental, relying mostly on photos I took of places and events that are personally meaningful, remembering the physical experience of being there, and evoking writings and thoughts about travel that have inspired me." The left opening in each gatefold contains a travel quotation and an image of shod feet; the right opening is a two-page spread of "wanderings" where the shod feet may well have trod: Atacama Desert, Bolivia; Tamil Nadu, India; Bardolino, Italy?.

Complete set, in 296 books, including 4 volume General Index, with all revised volumes current through April 2016 pocket part supplements. Ex-library without any stamps or labels, a very good to excellent set. Publisher's Price USD 3,572. * Provides comprehensive annotated coverage of the entire U.S. Code, U.S. Constitution, Federal Rules of Civil, Criminal, Bankruptcy and Appellate Procedure, the Federal Rules of Evidence, as well as the procedural rules of the major agencies, major treaties, and selected uncodified laws. USCS is the only U.S. Code set based on the Statutes at Large, which the courts have consistently ruled to be the controlling language when it differs from the codified statutes in the U.S. Code. See 1 USCS 204. The U.S. Supreme Court stated in Stephan v. United States, 319 U.S. 423 (1943) that "The very meaning of prima facie is that the Code cannot prevail over the Statutes at Large when the two are inconsistent." This statement has been cited consistently by the courts in years since, and a lower court decision was actually reversed by the Court in United States Nat'l. Bank v. Independent Ins. Agents of Am., 508 U.S. 439 (1993) because it used the U.S. Code instead of the Statutes at Large. When there is a discrepancy between the U.S. Code and the Statutes at Large, the Statutes at Large always wins.

Materials: Cotton plant, bronze, silk thread, cloth, watercolors, paper, ink, toner, plants, silk. Pigments prints and watercolor illustrations. Text printed in Lucida bright and handwritten. Custom clamshell box containing cotton plant with bronze electroplate stem, one paper signature with text, one cloth accordion. Signed and numbered by the artist. Cotton Heritage features an essay about the love of gardening and its connection to ancestral legacies. Alisa Banks, essay: "It all began with cotton - staple crop of the South that contributed to both forced dependence and independence. It provided support for some families and facilitated the destruction of others. ... It was a common link between large plantation, small farmer, sharecropper, and urban dweller. For many farming families of African descent, years of hardship 'growing cotton' as it relates agriculturally, culturally, and socially were punctuated by moments of happiness. ... Memories spoken and unspoken cast a shadow touching successive generations, contributing to seemingly unexplainable commonalities that are manifested in like fashion, such as strong connections to plants and gardens. Working in the soil, sharing space with plants offers a balm to the turbulent history that dwells beneath the patinated surface of those memories and reaches back to the ancestors."

Brooklyn, New York:: Brian Dettmer,, 2016.. One-of-a-Kind. 8.675 x 6 x 1.625" altered book. Acrylic varnish. Signed by the artist. Maria Popova, brainpickings: "Brian Dettmer is a surgical sculptor with a penchant for the esoteric, obscure, and near-obsolete. His remarkable book sculptures are meticulously carved into vintage volumes using a variety of tools - Exacto knives, surgical clamps, pliers, tweezers - and are painstakingly cut away one page at a time. "From atlases to dictionaries to paperbacks to encyclopedias, his artistic ingenuity - as well as his scalpel - knows no boundaries. "An intersection of pop art, ancient craft, and scientific fascination, Dettmer's creations are the epitome of architectured whimsy, precisely measured to tell a story yet artfully flamboyant in a way that makes the story wildly captivating. "Rather than trying to subvert things and impose his own message, Dettmer aims to play on and reveal hidden undertones of the books themselves through his sculptures.
