        Fisheye.

Ashveville, North Carolina:: Daniel Essig,, 2015.. One-of-a-kind. 12.5 x 12 x 1.5" sculpture. Hand carved and painted mahogany, holly, handmade paper, mica, shellac, nails, 18th- and 19th-century text pages, ambrotypes, tintype, watch crystals, antique gears, fossils, bones and other relics. Ethiopian and Coptic bindings. Daniel Essig: "Fish-Eye is part of a series of sculptural books addressing my most passionate interests-collecting and studying freshwater fish. As a high school student, I worked at a retail aquarium. As a photography major in college, I joined biology graduate students on their research trips to rivers across the Midwest, taking photographs of their finds. "Photography led me to books: Initially I planned to make handmade paper, print my images, and then bind them into a book. I never achieved that goal, but pursuing it exposed me to the joys of bookmaking-especially to the wooden Ethiopian/Coptic book structure. "Fish Eye -references a camera lens that produces a distorted view-brings together my passions for fish and books. With ambrotypes, antique gears, and watch crystals, the piece explores the fascinating ways that time reshapes our vision.

        Cartographical Incantations

Berkeley: Set In Motion Press, 2015. Paperback. Fine. Paperback. Number 7 of 25 copies. The book artist, Casey Gardner, beautifully describes this splendid new production as follows: "A book of cartographical unfoldings, tessellated map fragments, and beasts of the imagination. Pages open to reflected images of historical map details from the Dutch Age of Discovery. Turn the book over, and the patterns become more complex, abstracting the repetition and reflection many journeys entail. Text includes wayfarer invocations and wayfinding instructions, with mapmaking histories relating to a time when the unknown could be imbued with magical qualities. Also included is a traveller's tale of chance and choice. The story begins with a door opening and continues to hinge on the word perhaps relating the either/or possibilities that occur and move back and forth on journeys. A forgotten map presents the traveller with options at various crossroads while venturing forth into unpredictable landscapes. Each folio opens to a tableau of a map fragment joined in reverse symmetry, as if the landscape has more to reveal upon reflection, or mirrors a traveller's aspirations in a quest. On the reverse side of the accordion, these map images are conjured into rhythmic patterns reflecting the repetition of each step in a journey and the variables that form the spell of discovery that entices us into new horizons and lands. Rituals and motifs of movement and boundaries occur in every venture into any landscape, and yet the unique contours and borders are for each traveller to discover and cross. Each folio includes a Wayfarer Invocation, a poetic directive for finding one's way, or one's place in the world. We hope for guidance, exterior or interior, and question whether to take this path or that, to follow a map or strike out in faith. Going forth in any journey is an opportunity for an entrancing and spellbinding venture of options chosen to reflect our exploratory desires. Map fragments are from photographs taken by the artist of sixteenth and seventeenth-century Dutch maps found in atlases at the Public Library of Amsterdam, Openbare Bibliotheek Amsterdam." The book is a double-sided accordion structure with sewn folios. Letterpress and digitally printed on Hahnemuhle Igres and Nepalese Lokta silkscreened paper. In Fine Condition. Unpaginated.         THE BURIED GIANT. ***SIGNED LIMITED EDITION - A PRISTINE EXAMPLE***

Faber & Faber 2015 - First edition, first printing. SIGNED LIMITED EDITION. As New. A truly exceptional copy. One of only 200 copies specially produced and issued in a slipcase. Each copy is signed, numbered and contains a separate bespoke folder which houses 2 facsimile pages of manuscript which are also signed by the author. A beautiful edition indeed, and invested with very high production values; highly likely to prove a major Ishiguro highlight amongst collectors. All elements complete and in perfect preservation. Supplied with the promotional postcard. Here's a little context for this sparkling novel: The Romans have long since departed and Britain is steadily declining into ruin. But, at least, the wars that once ravaged the country have ceased. Axl and Beatrice, a couple of elderly Britons, decide that now is the time, finally, for them to set off across this troubled land of mist and rain to find the son they have not seen for years, the son they can scarcely remember. They know they will face many hazards - some strange and otherworldly - but they cannot foresee how their journey will reveal to them the dark and forgotten corners of their love for each other. Nor can they foresee that they will be joined on their journey by a Saxon warrior, his orphan charge, and a knight, each of them, like Axl and Beatrice, lost in some way to his own past, but drawn inexorably toward the comfort, and the burden, of the fullness of a life's memories. Sometimes savage, sometimes mysterious, always intensely moving, Kazuo Ishiguro's first novel in a decade tells a luminous story about the act of forgetting and the power of memory, a resonant tale of love, vengeance, and war. Ishiguro's tale of mists and monsters is a profound and compulsively readable examination of memory and guilt. The Buried Giant is the weirdest, riskiest and most ambitious thing Ishiguro has published in his celebrated 33-year career. Though it tackles many of his hallmark themes - memory and how it fades and gets suppressed and distorted, and our inability to fully face the past - The Buried Giant signals a stark departure from his spare, emotionally understated novels like The Remains of the Day, and Never Let Me Go. It is an eerie and melancholy dystopian love story. Please refer to images. D. B. USCS is the only U.S. Code set based on the Statutes at Large, which the courts have consistently ruled to be the controlling language when it differs from the codified statutes in the U.S. Code. See 1 USCS 204. The U.S. Supreme Court stated in Stephan v. United States, 319 U.S. 423 (1943) that "The very meaning of prima facie is that the Code cannot prevail over the Statutes at Large when the two are inconsistent." This statement has been cited consistently by the courts in years since, and a lower court decision was actually reversed by the Court in United States Nat'l. Bank v. Independent Ins. Agents of Am., 508 U.S. 439 (1993) because it used the U.S. Code instead of the Statutes at Large. When there is a discrepancy between the U.S. Code and the Statutes at Large, the Statutes at Large always wins.

        Buddha's Tears.

Rosendale, New York:: Women's Studio Workshop,, 2015.. Edition of 50. 20.75 x 46.5 cm; 13 pages. Accordion. Paper: Somerset Book 175 g. Typefaces: Helvetica and Heiti. Silkscreen, letterpress, and digitally printed. Bound in cloth-covered boards. Signed and numbered. WSW: "Buddha's Tears exposes the hidden story of organ harvesting in China from prisoners of conscience, such as Falun Gong practitioners. Statistical information is juxtaposed with poetic rendering of a legend of a statue of Buddha, who weeps in times of crisis. Each page is filled with dates, graphs, maps, drawings, and stories, concluding with a sutured image of China, a symbol of healing. The accordion pages unravel to form a long scroll, a traditional form of storytelling to lay out the facts of China's cruelty." Chelsea Campbell, "Still Beating: Wei Jane Chir's Buddha's Tears": "Award-winning investigative journalist Ethan Gutmann estimates that in China, 64,000 prisoners practicing Falun Gong may have been killed for their organs between 2000 and 2008. Falun Gong practitioners have been persecuted for their spirituality and arrested as prisoners of conscience since 1999 for their direct opposition to the state's communist ideology. Only recently, through detective work by journalists and human rights activists, have details of China's illegal transplanting practices come to light. "Artist's Book resident Wei Jane Chir came to WSW to edition her artist's book Buddha's Tears, about China's decades-long history of organ harvesting. As a practitioner of Falun Gong herself, she's using her tools as an artist to make this information reach a wider audience. "The cover of Buddha's Tears is complex and mysterious, mirroring the very narrative inside. Twenty different colors of ink combine to make the title almost invisible, hidden much like the story of organ harvesting has been for years. In certain lights and angles, the oranges and browns of the cover melt into a sea of blue with the golden title floating in the center. "Wei Jane's title comes from the legend of a Buddha statue in China that, in times of crisis, weeps. By referencing it, Wei Jane posits that the undisclosed horror of organ harvesting brings the Buddha to tears. The book opens on a pair of downcast eyes, then a bronze ocean, then a somber quote to prepare the viewer for the story about to unfold. "Buddha's Tears thirteen tryptic pages are dense with visual and textual information. Combining digitally- and screen-printed imagery, each page is filled with the history of Falun Gong, its persecution, and the legal cases brought against China. Graphs and tables of transplant numbers are paired with meditating Falun Gong practitioners; harvesting processes broken down in hand-drawn images sit beside covers of books and documentaries on organ harvesting. Wei Jane is an artist-meets-journalist, providing facts and charts on the subject while injecting her own artistic vision throughout. "The cover of Buddha's Tears is wrapped in silk, the accordion-bound pages unraveling to form a long scroll. Using the materials traditionally used in ancient Chinese storytelling, Wei Jane ironically lays out the facts of China's contemporary cruelty. This sense of irony is reflected in the book's final image: a bright red China stitched together with black thread. Wei Jane's niece, a surgeon, taught Wei Jane how to do a surgical stitch over the silkscreened China.
