        TOR

Colfax, WA, 2014. Unique. Hardcover. Fine. Timothy C. Ely. Planetary Collage Standard Drum Leaf binding. Bifurcated calf skin spine. printed with a Gilespie engraving, Boards covered in the same materials asthe book, with additional pigmented foil application. Five double-page spreads; 6 leaves total. Signed on the title page by Timothy Ely. Housed in a matching drop back box by Timothy Ely. 30cm x 23cmUnique printed, engraved manuscript artists’ book: a collaboration among art- ist/bookbinder Timothy C. Ely, engraver Oscar Gillespie, and designer/printer Robert Rowe.Artist’s statementFollowing a fine weekend workshop in October 2013 in Peoria, illinois at Bradley University, TOR began to take shape. On my first day there, I was introduced all around and, in the process, met Oscar Gillespie. For a few minutes, I observed him working on an extremely impressive engraving. I am usually cautious about quickly forming alliances, but Oscar’s manner and this superb and deeply evocative work blew my hesitation away. The encouragement to meet Oscar came from Robert Rowe, my host for the weekend, who also supported my blurt. i quickly suggested that we undertake some sort of collaborative effort. As I don’t print text, nor could I envision a page opposite text, I made some loose suggestions to Robert that he print this. He is an excellent printer and designer, as well as a fellow sensitive. And so it began, this project, to fold inward and seem to vibrate as a collision of ideas. I had no idea what would happen.During the course of the workshop, Oscar showed up with a portfolio of proofs and other bits. These would form the impulse for the leaves. On an early flight home I began to think of what could happen. How could this book reflect Oscar’s engravings, my drawings, hold to the sense of mystery, yet also support elegant letterpress printing, and the inward and perceptive myth structure I felt was projected from the engravings? So it rolled. I suggested the title of the book as TOR, an acronym for our three names. It is also short and both graphically and symbolically potent. Robert printed a series of beautiful grids, enciphered, and Oscar provided me with lambskin on which he had printed one of his astonishing engravings. i now had some components from which to riff. The venerable traditions of engraving and printing would be supported or cancelled by the odd frequencies of my drawings. In the late fall, I had a space between projects and began to assemble and draw. I constructed size/scale cutting templates based on Robert’s pages, and went through Oscar’s engravings with a template and view- finder so I could look for fragments with sufficient ‘wholeness’ to read relevant to him but could also be scaled to fit with my drawings. Also, I was given free rein to work onto or into his work, which was risky.I cut things up. It is something I love to do: to piece together formal fragments into a larger whole for a page. My technique referred to as a drum leaf binding allows for small pieces to be assembled into larger pieces. My etching press is small so this method affords me a way of printing large books from smaller, more manageable bits. Over the course of several weeks, I drew and fused engravings and text to drawings until i had sufficient expressive bulk– enough to evoke bookness. That task completed, I fabricated a simple endpaper and surfaced the paper with washes of color using acrylic resin, paste and egg white (dried and reconstituted). The book was carefully drummed together after making sure everything was secure, for there is no going back. Boards were attached and the book trimmed. It sat idle and under pressure until, once again, I returned to the parts of Oscar’s prints and my drawings and prints and again began to assemble and collage. Robert’s fine prints on Japanese paper formed a ‘‘non-objective’’ title block and two pieces of the printed lamb skin were used to cover the spine in my typical breakaway structure. Location templates were made to give me measurements for the paper strips for the cover and a similar technique was used to cover the box.Timothy C. Ely | October 2014 | Colfax,WA

        Vendredi ou la vie Sauvage

Devesset, Ardeche (France): Biennales Mondiales de la Reliure d'Art, 2014. Limited Edition. Hardcover. Fine. Tournier, Michel. Vendredi ou la vie Sauvage. Illustrated by Claire Illouz. Devesset (Ardeche): Biennales Mondiales de la Reliure d'Art, 2014. Copy 247/800. Dos Rapporté binding covered in ocean green quartzite stone veneer. Cave paper spine piece with bronze sheepskin onlays across spine and boards. Title in bronze foil. Goat suede split fly leaves. Housed in a quartzite stone 'All-in-One' box lined with split calf suede. Bound in 2015. 28.5 x 19.7cm. Tournier's Vendredi ou la vie Sauvage (published in English as Friday and Robinson) is a riff on Daniel Defoe's novel Robinson Crusoe. Since its publication in 1719, there have been many, many novels inspired by Defoe's castaway-on-a-deserted-island theme. Originally published in 1967 under the title Vendredi ou les Limbes du Pacifique (published in English as Friday), the book won the Grand Prix du roman de l'Académie française. Tournier then rewrote the book, published in 1971 under the title Vendredi ou la vie Sauvage, to appeal to a younger audience. This edition was specially printed by Jean-François Manier for the 13th Biennale Mondiales de la Reliure d'Art (World Biennial of Art Bookbinding). Of the 300 entries submitted to the competition from all over the world. Only 23 bindings were awarded prizes. Within this international competition is the school group category: students and alumni of the same bookbinding school. For the first time ever, students and alumni of the American Academy of Bookbinding submitted bindings as a group. Five of the six AAB submissions were among the 23 award-winning bindings, securing AAB second prize in the school group category. Curry's was one of the award winning bindings. Curry's gorgeous, tactile binding reflects both the green of the ocean that surrounds the island and the cave that plays such a large role in the novel.

        Tethys

Colfax, WA, 2014. Unique. Hardcover. As new. Planetary Collage Standard Drum Leaf binding with elaborately tooled contrasting spine and painted batik cotton-covered boards. Decorated endpapers by the artist. Manuscript frontispiece, manuscript and letterpress title page signed and dated by the artist. Six double-page manuscript illustrations; 7 leaves total. Drawn and painted throughout in ink, dry pigments, watercolor, and graphite. Housed in a custom drop back box by the artist. 28.5cmx22.8cm Tethys is a unique manuscript book, described by Ely thus: ?Each folio is built around a floor plan of a classic ? but secret ? building. The plan provides the format for the page. As I worked, once the plan was lightly delineated, additional enigmatic diagrams were layered together.? Tethys is a perfect example of Ely?s love of architecture and his skill as a draftsman. In addition to floor plans, each spread in Tethys is annotated in Ely?s cribriform writing. Some drawings appear to be site plans for his imaginary city. Other drawings may be directions to the city, using hints of celestial and topographic maps, both frequent tropes in Ely?s work. Close examination of the book reveals delicate scoring and blind stamping, adding an extra layer of explication or mystery, depending on your point of view. The title Ely gives a book often provides a partial key to its meaning. Tethys is more obscure than usual. In Classical mythology, Tethys is a minor goddess associated with the sea, but is also mentioned as causing the constellations to remain above the horizon. Combine this with one of the very few confirmed images of Tethys, from 4th century Antioch, depicting the goddess rising from the sea with a gold ship?s rudder against her shoulder, and one might conclude that Tethys is associated with celestial navigation at sea. Perhaps Tethys is our guide to the site of Ely?s buildings.

The Magician.

Seattle, Washington: Marquand Editions, 2014. Seattle, Washington:: Marquand Editions,, 2014.. Edition of 20. 15 x 9.5 x 14" box containing 11 pieces. Box on casters and with slots for the 11 items. Accompanied by a hat (11.5" diameter, height 8") with electrical plug and connector.Techniques: letterpress, inkjet and digital printing, variety of binding styles, video. Marquand Editions: "Chris Byrne's obsessional graphic novel took a decade to realize and another two years to produce. He and designer Scott Newton worked with Paper Hammer Studios to construct an audaciously ambitious bit of publishing magic."Paper Hammer Studios: "The Magician is an epic graphic novel, a bookmaking tour de force, a mesmerizing art object, and the completion of over a decade-long obsession of author Chris Byrne. This enigmatic box of wonders houses a dozen separate publications, printed and hand bound using a variety of techniques."The books include Theogony, Handmade, Down the Head, Mountain Man/She-Wolf, Letterpress Flipbook, 4-Ply Toilet Paper, Moleskine, The Magician Manual, M-Phase, Unfinished Versions, Colophon, and Curtains."The work includes an upside-down velveteen-covered magician's hat. The brim of the hat lifts to reveal a black toilet seat, which in turn lifts to reveal an electric-powered "flame". A fan blows white fabric which is lighted in colors when the unit is plugged in.Dan Nadel: The Comics Journal "A Conceptual Flush: The Magician": "In 1987, at the tail end of his undergraduate art studies, Chris Byrne began a comic strip called The Magician. He returned to it in 2000. But then it developed into something else, only just finished in January 2013: 12 objects housed in, and dependent on, a facsimile of a magician's box."Byrne's succinct description of The Magician … It's set in a public bathroom. The Magician is this character that goes through and reconciles opposites. Every misunderstanding I have about the universe is documented in these objects. And creation myths, too. But it's all tongue-in-cheek. "The Magician takes different forms. He is a sleeping figure. He is a hand. He is sperm. He is a cape."Each book/object uses some element of stage magic in the Mandrake the Magician sense of the term. And each asks the viewer/user to in some way engage or create herself."The first book, 'Theogony', depicts a birth of the hermaphrodite, uses oversized panels and a transparent hourglass shape, as well as pages that open and shut, creating (bathroom) infographic transformations of time and shape in order to achieve the toilet expulsion of The Magician."Maybe the most successful book is 'Handmade', which summarizes the basic concerns of Byrne's: birth, death, eating and sex, but using entirely the stuff of children's art, like paper plate drawings, hand puppets, leaves and hand shadows. The same book depicts the actual hands (no longer shadow puppets) creating structures of heaven and hell. And still another uses the basic form of the toilet and corresponding plunger to tell yet another creation myth of birth in a toilet."Maybe the most successful object is a folded poster, which, once unfurled, simultaneously resembles a magician's cape and the actual hermaphroditic physiology. Bowtie included."Another book makes card patterns from sheets of toilet paper. Cards form patterns not for any real meaning but because they can, and life becomes a pattern of one thing on top of another, on top of another, until the whole thing gets flushed. "Then there are a series of comic strips printed on specimen slides, which can be viewed through the lens built into the box. The strips emulate cellular movement. Another birth, another melding of forms."A hardbound standard size 'sketchbook' containing Byrne's studies for the objects and imagery functions not as a 'behind the scenes look' so much as an artifact like all the rest. As if someone sat there sketching the objects in the box - deciphering it."The box works because it's not only a container. It provides a soundtrack (endless flushing) as well as a screen for an animation (figures flushing), not to mention a lens for viewing specimen slides. "And so Byrne, playing dumb, uses 'Magician' not as a caricature but as a category. It's like 'magician' because of course - in the hokey rabbit in the hat way, that's how things are created. Something out of nothing: It's magic. So we begin with a simple trick in which a hermaphrodite is created. And we move on and on.

The candies are named and pictured with the date of their first appearance: Junior Mints 1949, Sugar Daddy 1925, Charleston Chew 1922, Marshmallow Fluff 1917, Conversation Hearts 1866, Necco Wafers 1849, and Maple Sugar Candy. Each confection's image is reduced to a stylized essence - love the pastel ribbons of Necco Wafers which fill their pages ignoring the idea of margins and the organic shape of Marshmallow Fluff bordered with sky-blue outline. The vertical views of the Charleston Chew contrast nicely with the rectangular Sugar Daddy's, while the simple chocolate oval of the Junior Mint evokes the uncomplicated pleasures of all these confections. A most delightful book to be savored - elegantly simple with the immediate thrill of strong color images filling the reader / viewer with memories of childhood pleasures. Stephanie Wolff is an artist, bookbinder, printer and book conservator working in Vermont. She was the Fall 2015 Helen M. Salzberg Artist-in-Residence at the Jaffe Center for Book Arts after being awarded the Creative and Performing Artists and Writers Fellowship at the American Antiquarian Society.         The Magician.

Seattle, Washington:: Marquand Editions,, 2014.. Edition of 20. 15 x 9.5 x 14" box containing 11 pieces. Box on casters and with slots for the 11 items. Accompanied by a hat (11.5" diameter, height 8") with electrical plug and connector. Techniques: letterpress, inkjet and digital printing, variety of binding styles, video. Marquand Editions: "Chris Byrne's obsessional graphic novel took a decade to realize and another two years to produce. He and designer Scott Newton worked with Paper Hammer Studios to construct an audaciously ambitious bit of publishing magic." Paper Hammer Studios: "The Magician is an epic graphic novel, a bookmaking tour de force, a mesmerizing art object, and the completion of over a decade-long obsession of author Chris Byrne. This enigmatic box of wonders houses a dozen separate publications, printed and hand bound using a variety of techniques. "The books include Theogony, Handmade, Down the Head, Mountain Man/She-Wolf, Letterpress Flipbook, 4-Ply Toilet Paper, Moleskine, The Magician Manual, M-Phase, Unfinished Versions, Colophon, and Curtains." The work includes an upside-down velveteen-covered magician's hat. The brim of the hat lifts to reveal a black toilet seat, which in turn lifts to reveal an electric-powered "flame". A fan blows white fabric which is lighted in colors when the unit is plugged in. Dan Nadel: The Comics Journal "A Conceptual Flush: The Magician": "In 1987, at the tail end of his undergraduate art studies, Chris Byrne began a comic strip called The Magician. He returned to it in 2000. But then it developed into something else, only just finished in January 2013: 12 objects housed in, and dependent on, a facsimile of a magician's box. "Byrne's succinct description of The Magician ? It's set in a public bathroom. The Magician is this character that goes through and reconciles opposites. Every misunderstanding I have about the universe is documented in these objects. And creation myths, too. But it's all tongue-in-cheek. "The Magician takes different forms. He is a sleeping figure. He is a hand. He is sperm. He is a cape. "Each book/object uses some element of stage magic in the Mandrake the Magician sense of the term. And each asks the viewer/user to in some way engage or create herself. "The first book, 'Theogony', depicts a birth of the hermaphrodite, uses oversized panels and a transparent hourglass shape, as well as pages that open and shut, creating (bathroom) infographic transformations of time and shape in order to achieve the toilet expulsion of The Magician. "Maybe the most successful book is 'Handmade', which summarizes the basic concerns of Byrne's: birth, death, eating and sex, but using entirely the stuff of children's art, like paper plate drawings, hand puppets, leaves and hand shadows. The same book depicts the actual hands (no longer shadow puppets) creating structures of heaven and hell. And still another uses the basic form of the toilet and corresponding plunger to tell yet another creation myth of birth in a toilet. "Maybe the most successful object is a folded poster, which, once unfurled, simultaneously resembles a magician's cape and the actual hermaphroditic physiology. Bowtie included. "Another book makes card patterns from sheets of toilet paper. Another birth, another melding of forms. "A hardbound standard size 'sketchbook' containing Byrne's studies for the objects and imagery functions not as a 'behind the scenes look' so much as an artifact like all the rest. As if someone sat there sketching the objects in the box - deciphering it. "The box works because it's not only a container.

        To-go Library.

Westhampton, Massachusetts:: Ann P. Lewis,, 2014.. One-of-a-Kind. 8.5 x 6.5 x 5.5" found metal filebox with hinged lid housing 25 books. Paper title label on front side slipped into metal id holder. Table of contents tipped to underside of lid. Books divided by ABC file tab cards. Each book signed and dated by the artist. Ann Lewis: "Alphabetically organized, each book loosely referring to the given letter in the sequence. The cumulative result is a catalog of daily reflections and visual/textual puns. I am using a simple book structure that is readily available to anyone with a sheet of paper and a sharp X-Acto blade. I relish this non-fussy, accessible approach to bookmaking. "'To-go' refers to this accessible and portable nature of small, tactile, intriguing books. Each file letter corresponds to a hidden foldbook with a loose reference to the letter. For instance: A = 'Aerial View of Landscape or Artisanal Cracker?', B = 'Feeling Blue?', C = 'Color', D = 'You Are Such a Drip.' "The collection is housed in a file box that one could conceivably tote anywhere, thereby making book arts more accessible, rather than being squirreled away in a vault or the far reaches of the library. Many people (a class of students) could look at the quirky little collection at one time. The actual book form is also accessible and would hopefully inspire others to make something unique or a sheet of 8½ x 11 paper.

        TOR

Colfax, WA, 2014. Unique. Hardcover. Fine. Timothy C. Ely. Planetary Collage Standard Drum Leaf binding. Bifurcated calf skin spine. printed with a Gilespie engraving, Boards covered in the same materials as the book, with additional pigmented foil application. Five double-page spreads; 6 leaves total. Signed on the title page by Timothy Ely. Housed in a matching drop back box by Timothy Ely. 30cm x 23cm Unique printed, engraved manuscript artists? book: a collaboration among art- ist/bookbinder Timothy C. Ely, engraver Oscar Gillespie, and designer/printer Robert Rowe. Artist?s statement Following a fine weekend workshop in October 2013 in Peoria, illinois at Bradley University, TOR began to take shape. On my first day there, I was introduced all around and, in the process, met Oscar Gillespie. For a few minutes, I observed him working on an extremely impressive engraving. I am usually cautious about quickly forming alliances, but Oscar?s manner and this superb and deeply evocative work blew my hesitation away. The encouragement to meet Oscar came from Robert Rowe, my host for the weekend, who also supported my blurt. i quickly suggested that we undertake some sort of collaborative effort. As I don?t print text, nor could I envision a page opposite text, I made some loose suggestions to Robert that he print this. He is an excellent printer and designer, as well as a fellow sensitive. And so it began, this project, to fold inward and seem to vibrate as a collision of ideas. I had no idea what would happen. During the course of the workshop, Oscar showed up with a portfolio of proofs and other bits. These would form the impulse for the leaves. On an early flight home I began to think of what could happen. How could this book reflect Oscar?s engravings, my drawings, hold to the sense of mystery, yet also support elegant letterpress printing, and the inward and perceptive myth structure I felt was projected from the engravings? So it rolled. I suggested the title of the book as TOR, an acronym for our three names. It is also short and both graphically and symbolically potent. Robert printed a series of beautiful grids, enciphered, and Oscar provided me with lambskin on which he had printed one of his astonishing engravings. i now had some components from which to riff. The venerable traditions of engraving and printing would be supported or cancelled by the odd frequencies of my drawings. In the late fall, I had a space between projects and began to assemble and draw. I constructed size/scale cutting templates based on Robert?s pages, and went through Oscar?s engravings with a template and view- finder so I could look for fragments with sufficient ?wholeness? to read relevant to him but could also be scaled to fit with my drawings. Also, I was given free rein to work onto or into his work, which was risky. I cut things up. It is something I love to do: to piece together formal fragments into a larger whole for a page. My technique referred to as a drum leaf binding allows for small pieces to be assembled into larger pieces. My etching press is small so this method affords me a way of printing large books from smaller, more manageable bits. Over the course of several weeks, I drew and fused engravings and text to drawings until i had sufficient expressive bulk? enough to evoke bookness. That task completed, I fabricated a simple endpaper and surfaced the paper with washes of color using acrylic resin, paste and egg white (dried and reconstituted). The book was carefully drummed together after making sure everything was secure, for there is no going back. Boards were attached and the book trimmed. It sat idle and under pressure until, once again, I returned to the parts of Oscar?s prints and my drawings and prints and again began to assemble and collage. Robert?s fine prints on Japanese paper formed a ??non-objective?? title block and two pieces of the printed lamb skin were used to cover the spine in my typical breakaway structure. Location templates were made to give me measurements for the paper strips for the cover and a similar technique was used to cover the box. Timothy C. Ely | October 2014 | Colfax,WA

        The Books of Blood

The Books of Blood by Clive Barker Six Hardcover Volumes - First US Hardcover Edition in Six Volumes with the cover art by Clive Subterranean Press 2014. (the true first hardcover edition set with these covers were Weidenfeld and Nicolson, 1985) Limited to 500 numbered and signed sets signed by Clive on a special limitation page in volume 1. This is set #267. Fine in Fine Dust Jackets in Red slipcase. These sets were sold out before publication in 2014.Note on Edition: The Books of Blood has a very confusing publication history. They were Barker's first claim to fame and originally published as 6 paperback originals in the UK. Shortly thereafter Weidenfeld and Nicolson released them as hardcovers with cover art by Barker. Unfortunately, US publishers felt the covers were too gruesome for the US market (of course they didn't understand Clive Barker fan sensibility). Putnam released the first three books as one volume, Poseidon Press published volumes 4 and 5 as "The Inhuman Condition" and "In the Flesh", and the final volume paired with Barker's short novel "Cabal". The small press publisher Scream Press then released their edition of the Books of Blood as a signed limited, but their offering was similar to Putnam and Poseidon Press: the first three books in one volume then the other three books as three separate volumes. Some various small press publishers have consequently released the Books of Blood, often in one volume. Not until this offering by Subterranean Press, no 6-volume hardcover set with Barker's covers had been issued in the United States. NOTE: All modern books with dust jackets come with dust jacket covers.ALSO: The pictures are of the actual item for sale. (The pictures are NOT stock photos.)
