Where Pojoaque Meets the Rio Grande over Egypt .

Sante Fe, New Mexico:: Counting Coup Press,, 2010.. One-of-a-Kind. 6.75 x 13"; 60 pages. Double-sided accordion structure. Collage. Book held in hard cover with attached letterpress jacket. This hard cover laid into a wrap of indigo dyed paper with wire closure. Counting Coup Press: “Letterpress printed invitation to the Pojoaque River Art Tour [forms a] palimpsest over black & white photo books of Egypt. Accordian fold with washi tape binding and collage. Wrapped as a gift in indigo asian (sic) paper and held by a hard cover with letterpress jacket. Unique. One in a series of storybooks sans words.” Suzanne Vilmain: "Where Pojoaque Meets the Rio Grande over Egypt is an homage to place and the stories we tell when words are suggested by juxtaposition. I live in the Rio Grande valley near the edge of the river where the Pojoaque River meets Black Mesa and the Rio Grande. I've been to the Rift Valley in Kenya. I have never been to Egypt — it's a place along the Nile River valley that holds stories told through myth and movies and hierogylphics and art. “Who do we become living alongside water and beneath mesas and mountains? “This collection of pages from other books folded back into another … are meant to remind rather than tell, like a Persian miniature or a tantra drawing, the absence of words and color gives space and focus for memory to mix with the unknown.”

PETRUS PICTAVIENSIS [PETER OF POITIERS], Compendium historiae in genealogia Christi (A Compendium of History in the Genealogy of Christ); in Latin, illuminated scroll on parchment

THIS IS AN ASTONISHINGLY BEAUTIFUL AND RARE ILLUSTRATED EARLY GOTHIC CHRONICLE SCROLL THAT PROVIDES A SUMMARY OF BIBLICAL HISTORY IN THE FORM OF A GENEALOGY FROM ADAM TO CHRIST. An illuminated scroll on parchment, in Latin, England (perhaps Oxford?), c. 1230-1250. Dimensions c. 3445 x 278-274 mm. The scroll composed of six membranes of varying dimensions, pasted together and joined end to end, with some loss of text at ends. Written in a formal gothic bookhand, layout varies, in one to three columns, designed to be read vertically from top to bottom, FIVE DIAGRAMS of differing shapes, FIVE CIRCULAR MINIATURES, and a unique LARGE RECTANGULAR MINIATURE IN TWO TIERS. The vivid colors of the genealogy contrast with the SIX DELICATE PEN-AND-INK MINIATURES colored with wash. BINDING: Mounted on two modern turned wood rollers, housed in a custom gray cloth box. TEXT: Peter of Poitiers studied at the University of Paris, where he attended the classes of Peter Lombard. served as chancellor of the University of Paris from 1193 to 1205. The Compendium historiae in genealogia Christi is his most famous work. It is a schematic depiction of biblical history in the form of a genealogy of Christ. The text was of fundamental importance for placing biblical narrative in a historical context. Although the text was almost certainly designed to be copied as a scroll, this form is far rarer than in the format of a codex. The present roll may be one of the earliest roll-format manuscript containing Peter of Poitiers's Compendium in this version. ILLUSTRATION: The original version of the scroll includes five diagrams: two cross-section, two aerial view, and one arcade framing a list. The interpolated version of the text marks the start of the Six Ages of the World, the present manuscript has five of these (with Adam missing). The present manuscript also includes a miniature in two registers representing, respectively: three standing kings, two holding a scepter, one a sword; and two standing priests, dressed as thirteenth-century archbishops: each with mitre, pallium, gloves, and crozier. PROVENANCE: The script, minor decoration, and the style of the miniatures, executed in pen and highlighted in wash, support a date in the second quarter of the thirteenth century, probably c. 1230-1250. More recently, it was part of a private American collection. CONDITION: Professionally conserved in 2010 and in fine condition. Full description and photographs available.

        Salem Lessons

Maureen Cummins, High Fall, NY 2010 - Hardcover. Number 28 of 30 copies. Signed by the artist and writer. A powerful work on the famed Salem witch trials that is the result of a decade's long collaboration between the book artist, Maureen Cummins, and poet Nicole Cooley, based on their research at the American Antiquarian Society while resident artists. The book pairs Cooley's cycle of poems, written specifically for this book, with images from a penmanship book of stern biblical commandments kept by a Salem boy, Josiah Peele in 1808-09. The book seeks "to trace the psychic reverberations of the witch trials on subsequent generations" (artist's statement). Each of Cooley's thirteen poems is written from the voice and perspective of one of the participants in the trials. They represent the accusers and accused, survivors and condemned, focusing primarily, as the trials did, on the women. They are presented chronologically, beginning with the slave Tituba, the first accused, and ending with the girl Susannah Martin, who refused to confess to being a witch. Printed on Johannot paper with the endpapers done on a handmade Belgique sheet. The poems are printed offset with the titles in letterpress. The images are silkscreen printed. Covers are from vintage writing slates such as Josiah Peele might have used. The book's binding allows for multiple structures - that of a codex or concertina, or as a "theater in the round" that presents the chorus of voices within. Housed in a black linen box decorated with the marks of the accused, who were unable to sign their names. Maureen's work is held in over one hundred permanent public collections internationally and has been included in exhibitions at the American Craft Museum, the Corcoran Gallery of Art, and the Rotunda Gallery (amongst others). She has received over a dozen grants and awards and has been an artist-in-residence at numerous venues, including the American Antiquarian Society and the Irish Museum of Modern Art. Size: 7 x 8 inches. In fine condition. Unpaginated (45 pages). ARTB/041317. [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy; Hard Cover]

Erratum: Brief Interruptions in the Waste Stream

San Francisco: Furturefarmers, 2010. San Francisco:: Furturefarmers,, 2010.. Edition of 40. Two cedar brick molds (each 18 x 10 x 2.5"); one brick (3.8 x 7.8"); 28 letterpress printed cards (7.75 x 4" in total). Thread closure.Stanford.edu: "Two cedar wood brick molds that fit snugly against one another to form a single structure made of 2 components mirroring each other. One mold contains a stack of 28 letterpressed cards that, in part, document the artists' performance of smashing a recycled ceramic toilet. The other contains a brick made from its repurposed remains. Both items are odoriferous [the cedar]. The title speaks to the error inherent in the wasteful nature of our waste processing systems and especially reveals as absurd that most essential element of any civilized home, indoor plumbing. The great white porcelain toilet is here read as a mistake but also as a catalyst of artistic fervor. Drawings alternate with texts, including a series of 'Brick idioms,' a chess play with pieces that can be torn out along perforated lines and various quotes by artists, architects and writers. San Francisco Center for the Book: "There are two components to the deluxe Book and Brick edition piece, both of which live in their own handmade Egyptian Cedar brick mold. The book takes form of a brick as a stack of individual cards that are two sided letterpress images and essays. The second component is a recycled and re-fired brick made from toilet shards with the title embossed onto the surface. The brick mod is modeled after an ancient Egyptian brick mold, which is both a document of a performance and a functional tool

ART OF INTAGLIO. PRODUCED ON A LETTERPRESS WITH A COLLECTION OF TWELVE PRINTS OF 18TH CENTURY LONDON TRADESMEN'S CARDS with SCHLOCKER & THE FISHES.|THE

Newtown, PA: Bird & Bull Press, 2010. quarter Morocco and Japanese cloth, slipcase. Bird & Bull Press. 8vo. quarter Morocco and Japanese cloth, slipcase. 33, 12 plates, 12 pages. Limited to 115 numbered copies. Morris' first dos-a-dos binding. Engravings and etchings (intaglios) are printed on special presses which exert the far greater pressure needed for this kind of printing. After successful experimentation in printing small intaglio plates by letterpress, Morris produced this book, with twelve plates (some as large as 5 x 6.5") printed in the same manner. A foreword and texts on the Origin of Intaglio, The Process, and background information on Heal and his book, precede the twelve engravings. From the prospectus: "These images were made from Ambrose Heal's privately published 1925 London Tradesmen's Cards of the Eighteenth Century, which showed 101 collotype prints of old engravings advertising the wares, goods and services offered about 250 years ago. I have been attracted to these "cards"-they are really papers of differing sizes-ever since I got Heal's book fifteen years ago. Thanks to my recent introduction to intaglio, I have returned twelve of these prints to their original 18th century state: you can run your finger over the print and feel the image." Bound dos-a-dos with the 16-page Schlocker & The Fishes, an account of "an unforgettable event in the early life of Henry Morris" with two full-page wood engravings by Wesley Bates. Prospectus loosely inserted.

Richard Long: A Line Made by Walking (One Work)

London: Afterall Books / The MIT Press, 2010. Hardcover. VG (Slight scuffs to dj, otherwise clean.). Black cloth, black & illus. dust jacket, 86 pp., BW and color illus. Part of the One Work series. "In 1967, [British land artist Richard Long (b. 1945)], then a student at St. Martin's School of Art in London, walked back and forth along a straight line in the grass in the English countryside, leaving a track that he then photographed in black and white. This work, A Line Made by Walking, was not only the starting point for Long's career as an artist, but also a landmark for a new kind of art emerging in Europe and the Americas. In this critical study, Dieter Roelstraete explores how the work's location outside the gallery context and its suggestion of bodily action makes it characteristic of the work made by a new generation of artists who combined the organic, the temporary, the non-material and the performative to offer a critique of the art system and its language, forms and values."         Erratum: Brief Interruptions in the Waste Stream Text written with Renny Pritikin

San Francisco:: Furturefarmers,, 2010.. Edition of 40. Two cedar brick molds (each 18 x 10 x 2.5"); one brick (3.8 x 7.8"); 28 letterpress printed cards (7.75 x 4" in total). Thread closure. Stanford.edu: "Two cedar wood brick molds that fit snugly against one another to form a single structure made of 2 components mirroring each other. The brick mod is modeled after an ancient Egyptian brick mold, which is both a document of a performance and a functional tool — an invitation to the viewer to take action in reversing the long list of society's erratum. "The 2010 IMPRINT Artist in Residence focuses on the process, production, and finished work created by our 2010 artists in residence, Amy Franceschini and her collaborator Michael Swaine, in the context of related work that spans a broad range of media. Their work takes a visual approach to articulating perceived conflict between humans and nature, and the individual to a community. "Erratum uses research, experimentation, and social commentary to express a concern and critique of systems of capital and their effects on the material and social environment. Erratum can be seen as an attempt to reverse the flow of waste produced by our society – creating new molds in order to fill them with new content or material – a symbol of self-reliance and regeneration. "Amy Franceschini is an artist with a deep interest in how humans interact and impact the world around them. An overarching theme in her work is a perceived conflict between humans and nature. She creates websites, installations, and public programs that provide platforms to question this divide. She draws inspiration from the improvisation, innovation, and collaboration that emerge from the choreographed activities of farming both big and small. In 2004, she co-founded Free Soil, an international collective of artists, activists, and researchers who work together to propose alternatives to the current social, political and environmental organization of space. ... She has received numerous awards including the SFMOMA Seca Award, Artadia Award, Eureka Fellowship, Creative Capital, and is recently the recipient of a Graham Foundation and Art Matters grant. She received her BFA from San Francisco State University and her MFA from Stanford University. Amy is a visiting faculty in the graduate program at the California College of the Arts. "Michael Swaine is an inventor and designer working in many media. Michael has collaborated with Futurefarmers since 1997. He is dedicated to working in the community, his 'Mending Library' Generosity Project involves him pushing an old fashioned ice cream style cart on wheels with a treadle-operated sewing machine on it through the streets of San Francisco. He teaches at CCA and is currently working on his MA in Design at UC Berkeley.

        Edible Alphabet.

Seattle, Washington:: Claudia Cohen,, 2010.. Edition of 30. 4.2 x 4.5"; 44 pages including free end papers. Stenciled pochoir. Calligraphy. Stamped words. Bound with parchment documents. Housed in a clamshell box covered with papers marbled by Karli Frigge of the Netherlands. Heavenly Monkey Press: "Claudia's most recent project (created during the summer of 2010), similar in spirit to Bookbinding Ephemera and Chasing Paper, An Edible Alphabet combines her love for letterforms, fanciful page compositions, and binding structures that convey intimacy when held. Each page reproduces from stencils a letter in three alphabets, surrounded by the names of foods starting with that letter. These words are taken from Claudia's large collection of early 20th-century rubber stamps, used in restaurants to create the daily menu. Some words are also written in her own elegant cursive. The paper used is a wafer-thin vintage laid, French folded and sewn long-stitch onto a vellum structure with three slips, and laced into an outer case made from pieces of 18th- and 19th-century parchment documents.
