        Happily Ever After.

[Marshfield Hills, MA 2010 - Unique artist's book on LamaLi paper toned with metallic pigment, signed by the artist, Dorothy Krause, on the back turn-in and dated 2010. Page size: 8 x 6 inches; 21pp. plus laid in colophon on transluscent vegetable vellum paper digitally printed in brown ink. Bound by the artist: hand sewn three-piece case binding with black leather spine and painted bookcloth in copper metallic tones to match the pages, with title engraved on front panel below small (1-3/4 x 1 inch) metal dragon; housed in matching black cloth over boards toned bronze at edges matching slipcase with title stamped in dull silver on front, fine. The images are taken from SLAVE FAIRY TALES translated and illustrated by Emily J. Harding. The images and text, written by the artist, are printed digitally using Lucinda Handwriting and Lucinda Grande fonts. The colophon / artist's statement starts, "This romantic fairy tale is set in never-never land with archetypal characters and motifs" and closes with "A symbolic psychological mirror, mythic childhood stories like this may well shape our adult lives." A sample of the text is "I am made to work hard / at menial tasks - / spinning flax into gold, / cleaning the scullery or / taking care of geese. / Or I have been placed under a spell." We all know these stories; not all of us realize their effects on our lives. The modern-looking metallic pages on black ground combine with the "retro- looking" images to bring a strangely contemporary sensibility to our oldest archetypes. See an Image.         IN THEIR YOUTH: THE DELUXE EDITION - Limited Clamshell Box Edition With Outer Cardboard Box And Original Silver-Gelatin Print

Bologna, Italy: Editore Damiani, 2010 - 1st Printing. Signed. 280 pages. Published in 2010. Retrospective collection of all-male portrait-photographs. One of the most beautiful collections of its kind ever published. Limited Clamshell Box Edition of 60 numbered and signed copies. The limitation is indicated not on the book but on the archival print that was produced by Greg Gorman specifically for the edition. Should not be confused with the regular trade edition. A stunningly beautiful production by Greg Gorman and Editore Damiani: Oversize-volume format. Photographs by Greg Gorman. Essay, "The Moment of Beauty", by Peter Weiermair. Inner linen clamshell cloth box, which contains the book in the recessed center. 13 X 17 inch gallery print-sized silver-gelatin print of Christopher Atkins is encased in its own black folio, which is also laid within the box. Outer cardboard box, which protects the easily soiled linen cloth box, but is missing in many copies of the Deluxe Edition. Printed on glossy stock paper in Bologna, Italy to the highest standards. In pictorial DJ with gilt titles on the cover and spine, as issued. Presents, in the ultimate collectible edition, Greg Gorman's eighth collection, a celebration of masculine beauty at its absolute peak, that is, "in their youth". "Comprises over 200 of the photographer's previously unpublished portraits from the last three decades, featuring famous actors shot when they were still unknown young men, from teen years into their early twenties [teen = eighteen and older; all of the models are of legal age] . Gorman's intimate celebrity portraits hinge on the sense of his subjects' vulnerability" (Publisher's blurb). "I decided to do a project that expressed my infatuation with male beauty, especially in terms of youth. The portraits don't have lots of backgrounds, they're straightforward. It's really about the person, not the elements. It boils down to the graphics of the individual more than the graphics of the setting" (Greg Gorman). They are all here, today's biggest stars, and the starlets who would give them a run for their money if looks were the sole measure. An absolute "must-have" edition for Greg Gorman collectors. This copy is one of the Limited Clamshell Box Edition, indicated as such on the gallery print-sized silver-gelatin print that is very prominently and beautifully numbered and signed in pencil on verso by Greg Gorman. It is also very prominently, beautifully, and uniquely signed by Christopher Atkins. Gorman did not sign the book itself, which is still in the publisher's original shrinkwrap. This title is now highly collectible. This is one of very few copies still available online and has no flaws, a pristine beauty. The print alone ensures that this edition's value will keep. A rare signed copy thus. 200 plates, 1 original print. One of the finest living American photographers. A flawless collectible copy.         Tree of Codes collection +++ signed UK true first printing +++ custom made palladium-plated brass slipcase +++ die-cut signed limited edition poster print +++ original wrapping paper +++,

London, Visual Editions, 2010 - UK first edition (text in English), true first printing in Mint condition, signed by Jonathan Safran Foer on title page, housed in a stunning custom made palladium-plated, partially die-cut brass slipcase (nowhere else to buy!). Complete with die-cut signed(!), numbered (one of 250 only) and stamped poster (47.5 x 30.0 cm). and with original wrapping paper and a sample page from the book in Mint condition. This first printing is easily distinguishable from all further printings by the 3-paragraph Olafur Eliason quote - the later printings carry a New York Times blurp. Absolut mint copy of this outstanding book which is "as much a sculptural object as it is a work of masterful storytelling. With the story literally carved out of another book, "Tree of Codes" has a different die-cut on every single page. Telling the haunting story of an enormous last day of life, it is a book that looks every bit like it feels: unlike anything else. Visual Editions got turned down by every printer they approached - their stock line being the book you want to make just cannot be made. Thankfully, the publishers found "Die Keure" in Belgium who were up to the challenge and made the impossible possible. Over one year of writing, cutting and proto-typing later, comes "Tree of Codes", a book that defies all book conventions." (Visual Editions) "An extraordinary journey that activates the layers of time and space in the handling of a book and its heap of words. Jonathan Safran Foer deftly deploys scultural means to craft a truely compelling story." (Olafur Eliasson). Shipped bubble-wrapped in sturdy card-box. For us, this is the most beautiful book of the year! The first printing is sold out at the publishers. Metal slipcase is manufactured on order, so please allow 3 weeks til shippping. Additional photos gladly sent upon request. k6a Sprache: en Gewicht in Gramm: 550 [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy; Soft Cover]

INFIDEL - Rare Signed, Placed, And Dated Copy of The First Edition/First Printing

London, England: Chris Boot Limited, 2010 - 1st Printing. Signed. 240 pages. Published in 2010. The photographer's breakthrough debut collection of photographs. Now considered a contemporary photography classic. The First Edition. Published in a very small and limited first print run as a softcover original only. The First Edition is now very rare. A brilliant production by Tim Hetherington and Chris Boot: Regular-sized volume format. Black leatherette boards with white titles embossed on the cover and spine, as issued. The book looks like a soldier's personal journal/diary. Photographs by Tim Hetherington. Text by Sebastian Junger. Printed on thick coated stock paper in the United Kingdom to absolutely the highest standards. Without DJ, as issued. Presents Tim Hetherington's now-classic coverage of American soldiers in combat in Afghanistan. "An intimate portrait of a single US platoon assigned to an outpost in the Korengal Valley, an area considered one of the most dangerous Afghan postings in the war against the Taliban. It is as much about love and male vulnerability as it is about bravery and war. Shooting over the course of one year, photographer Tim Hetherington made a series of images that prove surprisingly tender in their depiction of camaraderie and vulnerability (among the most moving is a series of the platoon sleeping). Alongside revealing interviews with Hetherington's subjects and an Introduction by Junger, the book is also illustrated with graphics of the tattoos the soldiers gave each other in the camp. 'Infidel' is taken from the tattoo the men adopted as a badge of their comradeship. Warm, moving, and full of humor, this book is a tribute to the rough men ready to do violence on our behalf, and a provocative contribution to the documentation of war in our time" (Publisher's blurb). Like his great photojournalist-predecessors, Hetherington openly despised war's architects (in this case, Bush, who started the war, and Obama, who escalated it), the people in power who routinely, hypocritically, and banally pay tribute to "our men and women in uniform", never ever daring to call them what they call themselves: Soldiers. For Hetherington and for each other, these soldiers are also more than that, and the book's epigraph says it eloquently: "For he who gives his life shall always be my brother". Tim Hetherington died on April 20, 2011 from a mortar attack while covering the Libyan rebellion on the front lines of the city of Misrata. His last-known recorded message was a Tweet: "In besieged Libyan city of Misrata. Indiscriminate shelling by Qaddafi forces. No sign of NATO". His tragic, sudden death was headline news throughout the world. An absolute "must-have" title for Tim Hetherington collectors. This copy is very prominently and beautifully signed, placed, and dated (in the year of publication) in blue pen on the title page by the photographer: "Tim Hetherington NYC 2010". This title is a great photography book. This is one of very few such signed and dated copies of the First Edition/First Printing still available online and has no flaws, a pristine beauty. Yes, of course, Tim Hetherington's premature and tragic death has made his breakthrough (and brilliant) book quite valuable. A rare signed copy thus. 200 color plates. One of the most brilliant photographers of our time. A flawless collectible copy. ISBN 1905712189. [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy; Soft Cover]

Niles, MI 2010 - Unique artist's book, the first of two in a series, comprising lidded outer box with inner, removable open box, visible through small window, inner box with five accordion books with poems and digitally-printed photograph and collaged photograph images, plus another interior box containing single accordion book tied with leather casing containing digitally-printed photograph images with text from 1884 diary entries made by John David Shortess, great-grandfather of the artist, as a young circuit preacher in central Pennsylvania, all images and text except that of John Shortess by the artist / author, Eugenie Torgerson, who has signed the piece on the bottom of the footed stand on which the large outer box sits. She has also signed four of the five books contained in the first box. Components: Footed stand: 7.25 x 7.25 x 2 inches; painted pine board, ball feet, binder's board and terracotta colored bookcloth. Lidded outer box: 7.5 x 7.5 x 8 inches; original photographs by the artist printed on Epson Premium Presentation Matte paper and presented under TruVue non-reflective glass with "frames" of various black, pale blue, and gold Asian papers over binder's board, bookcloth, trimmed with various brass decorative elements, against a ground of brown cloth over boards, with lid of lime green and terracotta cloth over boards with two different papers both of lime green on the bottom and black, blue and gold with glass panel in center allowing a view of the inner boxes and books, the glass surrounded by rubbed brass nails. Open inner box: 6 x 6 x 6 inches made of black bookcloth over binders board and terracotta silk cords, terracotta cloth over boards base. Four accordion books: 5 x 5.5 x .25 inches containing 12 pages each, hand-sewn accordion style binding, with boards covered in various Asian papers, endpapers of Stonehenge paper coated with shellac. Small inner box with lid: 5.5 x 3.5 x 4.25 inches, black bookcloth over boards, terracotta cloth on bottom, lid of terracotta and lime green cloth over boards with black and gold Asian paper on reverse of lid with title, artist and date, printed in black on lime green paper label, brass decorative trim and wood knob. John David's accordion book: 5.5 x 3.5 x .75 inches; 22pp; bound accordion style with green printable fabric bookcloth reproducing image of original "Standard Diary" used by Ms. Torgerson's great-grandfather. Photographic image of very rural landscape with white house on the last page following the end of the text, printed digitally on Stonehenge, enhanced with pastel and sealed with polymer varnish. The text reads, "Today we got things pretty well fixed up. I feel good at home. I like it here right well. It is a very hardy house and a very pleasant place to live." On the reverse are printed copies of some daily journal entries over photographs of mountains and fields. The book is held together with a green leather and black cord and black button sewn to the leather. Ms. Torgerson notes that her great- grandfather's diary gives accounts of his daily activities but rarely mentions how he feels about things. The text used on the reverse of his day book, starting "Today." is as close as he comes to a personal revelation.Ms. Torgerson's own verse, as printed in the five books housed in the large open box - J.D. Shortess text in the small, closed box - is as open as the box that houses it. Haunting collaged images of faces over prairie landscape, stone walls built by hand as the land was cleared, rivers through virgin landscape, one white house lovingly built by the first homesteaders, are interspersed with the text pages that refer to an earlier time when pioneers left the confines of the city for open land - or does it? Is every life a new construct? Ms. Torgerson's verse and images are at once a paean to her pioneering ancestors as well as musings on the life lived by us all. Her use of boxes - with glass lid or open or closed - provides the perfect vehicle to explore her i [Attributes: Signed Copy; Soft Cover]

The Seven Stages of Woman (with Apologies to William Shakespeare).

[Marshfield Hills, MA] 2010 - Unique artist's book, on boards made from multiple layers of mat board in which dimensional objects, including brass stencils for numbers 1 through 7, were embedded, signed by the artist, Dorothy Krause, on the colophon. Page size: 9.75 x 5.875 x 2.25 inches, 7pp. Binding: by the artist using Katie MacGregor's lime green handmade paper over boards, aged with pigment and wax, as is the blue-green paper covering the pages and the Cave Paper spine. Box: vintage green silk dome lidded box lined with ivory silk, vintage linen napkin hemmed to size of book and tied with tea-dyed trim enabling book to be removed from box. The front panel has a collage of unexposed glass negative, padlock and key, pages 1 - 7 with brass stencils from "Quaker City Stencil Works, 238 Arch St. Phila." on the first, each stencil 2-3/8 x 3-1/2 inches, on some pages placed on unexposed glass photographic negatives, once below, some without the negatives, all pages with vintage key or key hole or lock and some with all three. Ms. Krause states in the colophon that this book began with the purchase of a silk covered, dome lidded box in Ellsworth, Maine. She was attending a class taught by Melissa J. Craig which focused on books made from multiple layers of mat board in which dimensional objects are embedded. A box of unexposed glass photographic negatives found in a Machias flea market became a recurring motif. The locks and keys were from Ms. Krause's own studio. She rewrote Shakespeare's "Seven Stages of Man" text to accompany her visual pages. Her poem is printed digitally in olive green ink on a sheet of vegetable vellum paper and laid in the box below the book. The book itself is a stunning collage of found objects, so arranged as to articulate real beauty. Whether the images are embedded below glass, on glass, recessed without glass the reader / viewer is confronted with the inevitable passing of time as their lives progress and the secrets kept in the past or future. A stunning book. See an Image. [Attributes: Signed Copy; Hard Cover]

[New York 2010 - Unique artist's book, on archival paper, signed and dated by the artist, Sandra Jackman, on the inside back cover. Page size: 4 x 6 inches; 76pp. decorated followed by 26 blank pages. Bound: black leather with the title stamped in blind on the front panel and the author / artist's name, Sandra Jackman, on the back panel, with small white figure above name painted on leather by the artist, top and bottom edge decorated in paint and ink, fore edge sheets painted various colors, black and white headbands, housed in black cloth over boards slipcase, collaged with pen and ink of man's face on front with the tit; hand lettered by the author/artist, who has also lettered her name below title, back of slipcase with original collage of grotesque figure - face and torso covered in black for face and white for torso over title spelled out in 3-d gold letters. The author / artist has created this tale in words and images with archival and acid free inks. Some of the pages are collaged, some are highlighted with red ink, or gold, some have silver paper, one of the pages has a circular onlay that opens to reveal text below, one of the page spreads has both the recto and verso cut away to reveal parts that interlock, original negative and photograph also bound in. The author tells us the story: a "seductive promise (by the Ruling Bodies) to gift a female child (whose bloodline might be significant) with the power of words to persuade sets off hostilities and jealousies amongst various beings that co-exist in a landscape where a mysterious spirit known as the Bitter Poet causes unrest. Time moves forward though clocks no longer tick. The reader is welcome to read in to this book whatever suits their thinking."Sandra Jackman's graphic novel, hand written and painted, is a microcosm of contemporary ills. Monsters of the mundane all decorate / haunt these pages, until, finally, words don't matter and the pages are blank. A terrifying parable of our times. See an Image. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

[Attributes: Hard Cover]

Fragments of Light 5. Translation by Zahra Partovi. Sculpture by Linda Schrank.

Vincent FitzGerald & Company, New York 2010 - Artist's book, one of 35 copies, all on clear acrylic tiles, each signed and numbered by the artist on the colophon page. Page size: 9-1/2 x 10-3/4 inches folding to 6-1/2 x 9-1/2 inches, 32 slats (tiles) for the text in English and Persian + 10 tiles for titlepage and colophon. Bound by Zahra Partovi: the tiles sewn with blue and saffron ties (fishing line) fastened at end with small plastic disc so that ladder of tiles can be unfolded from an acrylic rectangular base; the English text on one side, the Persian text on tiles with violet and saffron fishing line threads, the binding style based on the style of the Chinese slatbook, a 3,000 year-old form made modern with the use of contemporary materials. The colophon and titlepage unfold from each end of the center "platform" as well. All four unfolding sides are affixed to a garnet-colored rectangular of acrylic drilled with holes through which the threads are laced. Housed in black suede fold-over box by Hands On Bookbinding, the box lined with silver industrial Mylar, each of the two long sides unfolding twice and the shorter two sides unfolding once. The text in English is laser etched in Alcuin (modified) type. Zahra Partovi's beautiful Persian calligraphy is also laser etched, the two texts meeting in the center on top of the garnet Lucite block. This is the 12th volume in the publication of Vincent FitzGerald & Company's Masnavi series of the poetry of Jalaluddin Mohammad Rumi in Zahra Partovi's translation. Each of these 12 volumes features a different artist paired with Partovi's translations. The artist whose work is featured here is Linda Schrank, a New York artist who teaches painting at Pratt in the Graduate School of Fine Arts. Her principal solo exhibitions include Rosenberg & Kaufman Fine Art, NYC, Kidder Smith Gallery, Boston, A.I.R. Gallery, NYC; Columbia University; Brown University; Fairleigh Dickinson University; the Museum of Ceramics, Monte San Savino, Italy; and the Etruscan Museum, Cortona, Italy. Her work is included in numerous private and public collections, including The Morgan Library, The Corcoran Museum of Art, the Boston Museum of Fine Arts, The New York Public Library, the Rose Art Museum, the Boston Public Library, the International Museum of Woman in Art, Abruzzo, Italy, and the Museo Regionale della Ceramica, Deruta, Italy. This is a most intriguing book, an examination of an ancient book form made thoroughly modern, using a 12th century text translated into a modern vernacular. Both format and text combine to illuminate the enduring relevance of the mystic Persian poet, Jalaluddin Mohammad Rumi. See an Image. [Attributes: Signed Copy; Hard Cover]

Title-page with woodcut madonna and child with an oval decorated border, full-page woodcut of Saint Catherine of Alexandria(?) and a woodcut decorated initial with a horse and rider. Early 20th-century plain paper wrappers.

Comas & Miralles, "La impremta a Perpinyà: Samsó Arbús", in: Arxiu de textos catalans antics 29 (2010), pp. 355 & 367 (1 copy); KVK & WorldCat (same copy); Palau 145465; REBIUN (same copy). First and only edition of a very rare pamphlet in Catalan Spanish about the freeing in 1590 of 400 Christians captured by the Ottoman Empire, published in Perpignan seventy years before Spain ceded it to France. The pamphlet, addressed to Jayme Orellos, the local lieutenant of King Phillip III's procurator, gives a detailed account of the religious and military strife between Spanish, Portuguese and Italian Christians and the Muslims of the Ottoman Empire from 11 June 1590 to the last months of the year, ending with a note of 4 December 1590. It names the military leaders on both sides and refers to Constantinople and Tripoli. Although Llot de Ribera frequently evokes the Virgin Mary as "Señora del Rosario", the full-page woodcut shows a female saint with sword, wheel and what may be a book, suggesting Saint Catherine of Alexandria, though the wheel is not broken. Miquel Llot de Ribera (Clarà 1555-Lleida/Lerida 1607?), Catalan Professor of Theology at the University of Perpignan, was Arbús's most important author. In very good condition.

Love, Graham Nash (Signed Limited Edition with 30 Signed Prints)

South Dennis, Massachusetts: 21st Editions , 2010. Limited Edition . Hardcover. New. Love, Graham Nash is an original fine press book released by 21ST Editions -producers of some of the most elegant and rare photographic art books in the world. This magnificent handmade two-volume set is limited to 80 copies signed and numbered by Nash, with only 50 offered for sale. Graham Nash is one of popular musics most legendary artists, celebrated for his work as a solo artist, with Crosby, Stills and Nash and with The Hollies. Nash has been inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame two times - with CSN and The Hollies - and into the Songwriters Hall of Fame. He is also an acclaimed photographer whose work has been shown worldwide. The images spotlighted in Love, Graham Nash are ones taken in the 1960s and 1970s, a period that Nash\'s era-defining artistry helped shape. Portraying friends, family, and fellow musicians, they capture the essence of a momentous time in American culture. Hand-bound in African Bubinga wood, the sets main volume contains an introduction by Neil Young, 21 bound photographs, lyrics from 17 classic Nash songs, and an exclusive companion CD. The lyrics are reproduced as facsimiles of their original manuscripts - on hotel letterhead, torn notebook pages, and other ephemera. The book is signed by Graham Nash, David Crosby, Stephen Stills, and Neil Young. The second volume collects letterpress transcriptions of the lyrics, and an exquisite portfolio of nine free-standing photographs, each signed by Nash. \"During the time I\'ve spent exploring the work of Graham Nash, I\'ve come to understand his vision as a songwriter, performer, photographer - and friend\", said Steven Albahari, Publisher. Love, Graham Nash is the result of more than three years of collaboration with Graham. An extraordinary cultural artifact, Love, Graham Nash is a work of art in and of itself. It merges the time-honored traditions of fine book making, dry-trap and letterpress printing, and photographic illustration with the most sophisticated modern printing technologies - ones pioneered by Nash Editions. The main book is hand-bound in African Bubinga wood with the introduction being written by Neil Young. Both books are printed in letterpress on handmade cotton rag paper and housed in a custom clamshell box along with a separate portfolio of 9 signed free-standing prints and a custom made CD of 17 classic Graham Nash songs. The dimensions are 15 inches x 13 inches. The main book is signed and numbered by Crosby, Stills, Nash, and Young on the limitation page. A Letter of Provenance from Lance Speer, former 21ST Editions Contributing Editor and Director of Marketing will accompany the book and portfolio. The books and prints are in PRISTINE condition.
