        A'tugwaqan: Three Mi'kmaq Indian Stories

Glastonbury, Connecticut:: Blue Moon Press,, 2010.. Edition of 100. 11 x 9"; 28 pages. Letterpress text with full-page color reduction woodcuts. Types: Garamond, Franklin Gothic Condensed, and Florentine Bold. Printed on Somerset Book with camel colored Hahnemühle Ingres fly and end sheets. Bound in Mohawk Superfine papers with cloth spine. Jim Lee, Colophon: "This book first began as a reaction to time I spent on the island of Cape Breton, Nova Scotia in 2003. As with most of my books, it was to serve as a summation of the work I was making about the landscape of that place and the various people who live there. But I became fascinated by the culture, lore, and history of the Mi'kmaq People as my research continued, until it became the sole subject of the book. Begun in 2005, it has taken four years to complete, much longer than anticipated in part due to old, worn out press rollers, various wrong turns and not quite getting all of those very important ducks absolutely in a row." "To produce the twenty woodcut images, 45 separate plywood birch blocks were cut and printed, most in the reduction technique, with each major woodcut requiring around 14 press runs to complete." Ruth Homes Whitehead is known as an authority on Mi'kmaq history. She is staff ethnologist and assistant curator in history at the Nova Scotia Museum, where she has worked since 1972. She has published numerous books and articles on the Mi'kmaq culture including documenting stories from their oral tradition. The three Mi'kmaq stories in this book are "Kluskap," "Kluskap and His Relations," and "Ki'kwa'ju and Skusi'skwaq.

Portland, Maine:: Rebecca Goodale,, 2010.. Edition of 5. 10 x 9.5" closed, opens to 38 x 38". Banner book with handprinted collograph. Boards bound in red silk with raised letters. Ribbons on board allow image to be hung. No text for this silenced species. The ghostly image is a too-apt reminder of the cost of extinction.Rebecca Goodale: "Dodo came from a piece of persuasive writing that I am working on, a piece about extinction and memory. I was fascinated to find out that the dodo disappeared 100 years before the appearance of the dodo in Alice in Wonderland. Alice meets the dodo in a pool of her own tears and the encounter brought many readers to a belated interest in the bird, no doubt do to the power of the narrative and/or a good illustration. I have drawn dodo skeletons at NY Natural History Museum and at Harvard. I have also drawn from a 3D scientific model at Harvard. There is very little left of the dodo, and I believe that this famous extinction does link somehow to my own body of work. The image in my dodo book is roughly life size."

        Poder [Power]

Havana, Cuba:: Red Trillium Press,, 2010.. Edition of 25. 10.125 x 10.125" closed; 20 pages comprised of five 4-paneled accordions (four containing only images; one containing text: introduction, list of artists and prints, colophon). Text in Spanish and English. Laid in four-flap letterfold black and red paper wrapper. Yamilys Brito Jorge, introduction: "Power rules. …For some Power is skill, for others command or willpower, even persuasion. But for most Power is control either over others or themselves. ... "By making art and putting together this book we have chosen our way to relate to Power. All prints included illustrate, different aspect of The Relationships of Power in its various dimensions: the power of the mind, willpower, financial, military, economic power, the power of authority, social power, physical or mystical ... "After all Power is a natural condition." Poder is the first in a planned trilogy of collaborative projects of Cuban artists and American book artist Steven Daiber. Steven Daiber, Bonefolder, Volume 7, 2011: "This book arts collaboration is a series: a trilogy based on themes Cuban artists feel describe their social and political relationships. "The creation of Poder was a collective effort and at times herding cats. The project involved sixteen artists, various institutions, and multiple locations. Finding materials was perhaps the most complicated part of the process. In Cuba there are very few art supply stores; everything comes in by boat around the far-reaching US blockade. It was complicated! The preliminary meetings decided the first theme (Poder), format and size of the book. The two art schools San Alejandro Art Academy and ISA (Institute of Superior Arts) helped provide materials, equipment, and a location for the creation of the book. "

Box lined with marbled paper made by Susan Makov. Marbled paper and leather title insert on box. Designed and printed by Susan Makov. Susan Makov, introduction: "A visual look at the scientific designation of 'spheres' or layers of natural forms of life on earth. A juxtaposition of these terms from internet sources and His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama of Tibet." Colophon: "My response to the ongoing oil spill disaster in the Gulf of Mexico is dismay and hope. Amongst the layers of organic and inorganic materials I search for historic and scientific evidence that our world may continue to evolve in a positive direction. I have visualized the interaction of elements and various ecological systems through the creation of woodcuts and digital imagery. As an artist, it is the best way for me to respond to what feels like an impending crisis…. "I have turned to scientific terms to describe the layers of our world: burying the past, building on the past; upheavals in terms of physical collisions of plate tectonics and collisions of people with power against the powerless. I have turned to the Dalai Lama, who sees the world in broad terms and understands the importance of a moral attitude towards the environment as a realistic approach to human behavior.

HM = X Checklisst Number III, The First Decade

Vancouver, British Columbia:: Heavenly Monkey Press,, 2010.. Edition of 26. 8.25 x 12.5"; 40 pages. Set in Dante and Dante Titling type. Printed in two colors on dampened Guarro laid paper. Bound in black Japanese cloth, with printed labels on the front board and spine. This is Copy B, unsigned as issued. Heavenly Monkey Press: "The checklist itself runs to 20 pages, followed by a section in which actual leaves from six of our books are mounted (i.e. hinged) on successive rectos, above the book's printed title. The samples are taken from Francesco Griffo da Bologna (1999); The "Innsmouth Look" (2003); The Garden of Good & Evil (2004); A Letter from T.E. Lawrence (2005); The Girl with the Mask of a Crow (2005); and Iskandariya (2007). The checklist's format is commensurate with Elements in Correlation, to which this checklist can be considered a companion volume, in that the sample leaves are offered primarily as an admittedly dismal history in (on) paper of HM's attempts over the decade to learn how to properly dampen and print on different papers (primarily hand made). The edition consists of 26 copies (4to, 40 pp with samples), each one press-lettered (A - Z) with Jim Rimmer's 36-pt Duensing type. The books have been sewn at HM, and uniformly cased in black Japanese cloth, with printed labels on the front board and spine." Rollin Milroy: "It was around this time exactly ten years ago that the first book bearing the Heavenly Monkey imprint was issued. Since then HM and HM Editions have issued a total of 32 titles, all of which have been detailed, with brief commentaries, in our newly published Checklist Number Three. It is by far the most elaborate of our checklists to date, and the first to actually be printed at the studio. The Heavenly Monkey and HM Editions publications are listed in separate sections. For the sake of completeness, a third section details the three books issued under HM's predecessor imprint, A Lone Press (1998-99)." Rollin Milroy, introduction: "About the samples included at the back: yes, most of them are wretched in one way or another. That's why they weren't issued in the editions. I offer them here as much for their faults, and as a history told on different papers of my ongoing efforts to learn how to print, as for any praiseworthy qualities they might have. "One of the first hard lessons I learned, after the completion of the Griffo book, was to always have another project ready to print. Otherwise, you face a great blankness, wondering what to do next. Ten years on, I have the choice of more projects than I could ever complete, and I must decide which ones will occupy my second decade. They will be fewer in number, and more substantial in format. I also see them as perhaps forming the second half of a whole, and bringing HM to a logical end. These kinds of endeavors are best ended when one is at the top of their game, and as much as I have learned in the past decade, I have at least that much again to learn during the next.

Oakland, California:: Moshi-Moshi Press,, 2010.. Edition of 15. 7 x 11?" closed, extends to 40"; 16 pages. Accordion structure from back pastedown. 14 intaglio prints. Text letterpress printed with papyrus font on Arches cover paper. Bound in cloth boards. Printed, designed, and handbound by the artist. Signed and numbered. Seiko Tachibana: "The elements of my work represent everything that I see, hear, breathe, and taste. Just as each of our actions has a meaning, there is a reason why each of my lines and dots is created just so. My marks often employ circles and bars as metaphors for rain and water. Rain is about hope. It gives life to all creatures on Earth. It is an essential element in the cycle of life. The circle represents the natural duality of the infinite whole, and suggests the constant balancing forces of Yin and Yang. In living our daily lives, we are confronted with an almost incomprehensible deluge of images, and our understanding of the world around us ?- our reality ?-- is largely dependent upon which of these images we choose to inform us and which we reject. We are, therefore, simultaneously enlightened and deceived about the true nature of our universe."

Laser cut on an Epilog Zing laser cutter. Letter transformation using Rhino, a 3D modeling program. Printed with Ogaki and Myriad fonts on Japanese Hosho Paper. Cloth covered cover with brass post binding. Small Craft Advisory Press: "Spandrel is a collaborative project between artist Denise Bookwalter and poet Frank Giampietro. Giampietro applied the term spandrel to his left over bits of poetry elevating them from discarded lines to a form of poetry. The term spandrel is an architectural g\term for the space between a curve and a rectangular boundary like the space above an arch or below a stairway. It is a space that is necessary to create something else. The spandrel becomes as important as the thing that it is surrounding. "In the book two poetic spandrels are cut into the pages. The first appears in full at the beginning and the other in full at the end. Through 150 pages the letters of the first poem on the first page transform into the letters of the last poems on the last page. In the middle of the book the letters become unreadable. By cutting and removing the letters from the book, the book becomes the spandrel itself. If the letters were not removed from the book the book would be blank pages. The book becomes a spandrel.

Berkeley, California:: Flying Fish Press,, 2010.. Edition of 50. 5 x 9.75" closed, extends to 66"; 24 pages. A combination of letterpress printing and monoprinting. Accordion structure with a variation on a structure originally designed by Hedi Kyle. Housed in 5.5 x 9.75 x 2.75" two flap portfolio cloth-covered box. Magnet closure. Flying Fish Press: "Invented Landscape is an exploration about the perception of the world beyond a person?'s immediate physical experience. The idea that we know and understand the larger world through print and digital media may be more of an illusion than we realize. ... This book presents the reader with a contemplative and intimate reading experience as well as a very wide three-dimensional sculptural object." Julie Chen, colophon: "The initial idea for this book came out of my participation in The Fourth International Biennial for the Artists' Book hosted by The Bibliotheca Alexandrina in Alexandria, Egypt, in the spring of 2010. The assigned theme of nomadism led me to do much research and reflecting about the steady decline of the grasslands of Central Asia and Mongolia, and the disappearance of nomadic pastoralism in those parts of the world. In 2010, Mongolia experienced one of the harshest winters in a decade causing catastrophic losses of herds that may force many nomadic families to abandon their traditional way of life.

Text letterpress printed by Patricia Curtan. Bound by John DeMerritt. Bookbinding paper over boards with tipped on chimney images. Housed in clamshell box with titles stamped in gilt on spine and cover. Boards and box covered in handmade paper by Cave Papers. Gail Skoff: "I consider this book a circle book, because as you start reading and looking at the images you can turn it over and continue the viewing on the reverse side, and end up at the title page again. "I first visited the island of Burano in 2007. I was coming from Murano and was en route to Torcello, islands in the Venetian lagoon, where I had been photographing mosaics in ancient churches. I stepped off the vaporetto on a whim and fell in love with the vibrant colors of the village, which were unlike anything I had seen in the area. The brightly painted houses were a complete contrast to the tiny mosaic patterns I had been photographing and looked like children's building blocks in bold bright colors. I grew fascinated by the time-weathered buildings, and by the chimney's sculptural forms. They showed their colors vividly, uninterrupted by windows and doorways. "Local legend has it that Burano's fishermen chose to paint their homes contrasting colors so they would be able to recognize them from the sea.

Bound in cloth with ribbon tie closures. Title tipped on cover. Signed and numbered by the artist. By using the top blue loop (one of the ribbon tie closures), the book can be hung vertically for a cascading display. Clematis continues Goodale's Threatened and Endangered series in a broad sense. Clematis has been classified as a rare plant by the state of Maine. Their first two classifications for plants are those that are imperiled, which are the plants that Goodale usually includes in her series. The rare classification indicates the lack of sightings in Maine (20-100 occurrences). Rebecca Goodale: "My newest book is a tall, cascading book representing the genus Clematis. I drew from two plants, one was Maine's rare Clematis occidentalis. The other was Clematis alpina, which I drew while visiting Montana in June 2010. In both species the blossoms are the color of the sky and look as flecks of the sky are present in the dense shadows of the undergrowth.

Walking Up and Down in Asia

San Francisco:: Pettingell Book Bindery / Art Hazelwood,, 2010.. Edition of 10. 16 x 18"; 72 pages. Sixty woodcuts printed by the artist on Masa paper in editions varying in size from 25 to 50 of which numbers 11 - 20 were bound by the artist in a hand-sewn hardcover book format. Prints tipped onto Arches cover text paper. Each print numbered, titled, and signed. Art Hazelwood: "From 1986 to 1993 I traveled around the world, living in Europe and Asia and in various parts of the States. My primary interest however was traveling in Asia. The intensity of travel lured me on to see more and more. Experiences of people and places left their mark and I have tried to give back some of that feeling. The Tibetan nomads, Vietnamese 'cyclo' drivers, Japanese 'salary man,' Sikhs, Thais, and Uygurs that make up this series are the actors on an impossibly crowded world stage. It is this sometimes overwhelming encounter with the world that these prints seek to express."Prints in this series include images of the following countries: China, Tibet, Hong Kong, Macau, Japan, Singapore, Vietnam, Thailand, India, and Pakistan. The production of this entire series makes up a period of 14 years from first trip to bound book, although the body of the prints were cut in the mid to late 90's."Berin Golonu, Artweek July/August Edition 2000, 'Review of Walking Up and Down in Asia': "When people embark on their travels, they often record their adventures in snapshots or in travel journals. Art Hazelwood has taken a more time-honored approach to recording the memories of his travels throughout Asia. After sketching his observations on drawing pads, Hazelwood creates woodcuts of his impressions in a graphic folk style. Flattened perspectives give added emphasis to an allover patterning, with crowded compositions that fill every square inch of the picture frame. Hazelwood's dynamic genre scenes and landscapes at once emphasize the frenetic activity of a dense urban metropolis such as Tokyo or Hong Kong, while at the same time, capturing the more leisurely way of life led by the region's rural inhabitants."The artist first traveled to China in 1986, and has since developed somewhat of a love affair with Asia, having revisited the continent extensively over the past fourteen years. More than sixty woodcuts comprise Hazelwood's Asia series, on view at the Fetterly Gallery in Vallejo. The artist's enchantment with this region of the world and its people comes through in his images, which record travels in China, Hong Kong, Macau, Japan, Singapore, Vietnam, Thailand, India and Pakistan. Such sentiments prove to be infectious, for in looking at Hazelwood's woodcuts, we cannot help but be tempted to partake in a similar journey by following the artist's travel routes."

Bound in Korean silk. Matching slipcase. Howard Munson: "I was a guest with Arnold Iger and Paul Kwan at a temple in San Francisco Victorian House, which has since burned down. The ritual consisted of a woman who would go into many trances becoming various spirit gods. They ranged from princess, kings, and warriors. Along with the traditional live Vietnamese music, there was also much sharing of food and drink." Leslie Evans, "Spirit Possession Religions and Popular Rituals Flourish in Vietnam" (posted 6/8/2004 on the UCLA Center for Asian Studies website): "One of the largest and most widespread of the belief systems is Dao Mau, the Mother Goddess religion. One of its central practices is the Len Dong spirit possession ritual, where spirit mediums channel various gods and goddesses connected to the cult. When in trance for communication with the other world, the mediums don a red veil which facilitates manifestation of the spirit in their bodies."The Len Dong 'going into trance' ritual, despite its otherworldly trappings, is generally sought out by petitioners to achieve very down-to-earth goals: a good business, a better job, curing a health condition, or passing university entrance exam."The photographs of the ceremony were taken by Munson then reproduced for the artist book. The video of the ceremony on DVD was produced by Paul Kwan and Arnold Iger. Persona Grad Productions: "Arnold Iger and Paul Kwan are co-founders of Persona Grata Productions, an interdisciplinary production company based in San Francisco, that create videos, theatrical performances, and art exhibitions. The duo directed, produced and wrote ANATOMY OF A SPRINGROLL, PINS AND NOODLES and A WOK IN PROGRESS (A Springroll Family Trilogy). They have won awards from the American Film Institute, National Endowments for the Arts, California Arts Council, National Asian American Telecommunications Association, Corporation for Public Broadcasting, San Francisco Arts Commission, San Francisco Grants for the Arts, and the Independent Television Service.

Intl Specialized Book Service Inc, 2010. Hardcover. New. Retroviruses comprise a diverse family of enveloped RNA viruses, remarkable for their use of reverse transcription of viral RNA into linear double stranded DNA during replication and the subsequent integration of this DNA into the genome of the host cell. Members of this family include important pathogens such as HIV-1, feline leukemia, and several cancer-causing viruses. However interest in these viruses extends beyond their disease causing capabilities. For example, research in this area led to the discovery of oncogenes, a major advance in the field of cancer genetics. Studies of retroviruses have contributed greatly to our understanding of mechanisms that regulate eukaryotic gene expression. In addition retroviruses are proving to be valuable research tools in molecular biology and have been used successfully in gene therapy (e.g. to treat X-linked severe combined immunodeficiency). Written by the top retroviral specialists, this book reviews the genomics, molecular biology, and pathogenesis of these important viruses, comprehensively covering all the recent advances. Topics include: host and retroelement interactions, endogenous retroviruses, retroviral proteins and genomes, viral entry and uncoating, reverse transcription and integration, transcription, splicing and RNA transport, pathogenesis of oncoviral infections, pathogenesis of immunodeficiency virus infections, retroviral restriction factors molecular vaccines and correlates of protection, gammaretroviral and lentiviral vectors, non-primatemammalian and fish retroviruses, simian exogenous retroviruses, and HTLV and HIV"--Publisher's description.SKU: MM-20380971; EAN: 9781904455554

Abc-Clio Inc, 2010. 2. Hardcover. New. From the Publisher: Did you know that the tale of Cinderella is over 1,000 years old, and similar versions of this singular story exist in hundreds of cultures around the globe? Have you heard of "deathlore," a subgenre of folklore involving tombstones, coffins, cemeteries, and roadside memorial shrines? Did you realize that UFO sightings and cyber cultures constitute modern folklore? The broad field of folklore studies, developed over the past two centuries, provides significant insights into many aspects of human culture. While the term "folklore" conjures images of ancient practices and beliefs or folk heroes and traditional stories, it also applies to today's ever-changing cultural landscape. Even certain aspects of modern Internet-based popularculture and contemporary rites of passage represent folklore. This encyclopedia covers all the major genres of both ancient and contemporary folklore. This second edition adds more than 100 entries that examine the folklore practices of major ethnic groups, folk heroes, creatures of myth and legend, and emerging areas of interest in folklore studies.SKU: MM-20534327; EAN: 9781598842418

Fabriano Artistico hotpress paper, pochoir, aluminum, and electronics. Pop ups. Wood covers with cloth spine. MJ Linford: "Tools have always been fascinating to me, and I think I would have liked to be a woodworker. My father was a carpenter, and brought me up to respect tools. He had many bits of advice that he passed on over the years, and I?'ve learned a lot from those words of wisdom (?'measure once, cut twice?' [sic] most of all). I enjoyed looking up the definitions for each of the tools, and adding my own alternate definitions as well. I learned a lot about what works and what doesn?'t work in paper engineering while trying to get the drill bit to spin, the saw to make noise, the tape measure to snap back in, etc."

        Raising the Supine Dome

[Orange, Massachusetts / Hanover, New Hampshire]:: Amy Borezo,, 2010.. Edition of 20. 7.75 x 11.25 x 1.75"; 14 pages. Accordion structure. Printed on 100% rag Holyoke Fine Paper. Hand-set 14 pt Caslon metal type for text. Title in Futura. Images printed using photopolymer plates. Laser cut figures. Paper covered boards. Housed in linen covered clamshell box. Each page consists of two printed sheets glued back to back, creating a thick, rigid panel that stands on its own. A continuous sheet of tyvek runs between the pages that form the panels, acting as a hinge. Amy Borezo, catalog: "The artist's book Raising the Supine Dome depicts the visionary architect Buckminster Fuller's first attempt to construct a geodesic dome with a class of students at the experimental school, Black Mountain College, in 1948. The actual construction was a failure because the dome did not rise, but Fuller saw each failure as a way of getting closer to true understanding. The book presents the event as a stripped down, schematic tableau of figures on a white field amidst sinuous red strips of construction material, emphasizing the beauty and poetry of the failed event. The red lines become drawings in space, sprawling and expressive, unwilling to coalesce into the tidy geometry of Fuller's built universe. The figures attempting to erect the dome are physically cut out of the paper, revealing a triangular grid beneath, representing the point at which individuals lose their unique characteristics when working together as a group toward a specific goal. The text contained within the book is a found poem, taken from a variety of primary sources and edited, altered and combined to give the reader a sense of time and place as well as a basic narrative of the event. The writings of Buckminster Fuller and excerpts from the poem about Fuller 'The Praises' by Charles Olson combine with anecdotes from Fuller's class at Black Mountain by Elaine de Kooning. The text is placed along the bottom edge of the book in a subtle and sloping downward arc, echoing the shape of the supine dome that refuses to arc upward. The accordion book's stiff leaves can be paged through as a codex or can stand upright and extend out fully and be viewed from both sides as the play of light and shadow interacts with the cut figures.

The first line of text is from a journal entry written in 1857 by the Russian writer, Leo Tolstoy, and the second is a Russian proverb. Tolstoy describes a gambling loss, whereas the proverb on the book's reverse side demonstrates a luckier aspect of risk."
