Daphne. Versionen eines Mythos. Zeichnungen und Gedichte.

Frankfurt am Main, Insel Verlag, 2009.. Vorzugsausgabe in 300 numerierten Exemplaren. Autographed statement regarding the story of John Minihan's icon phototograph of Samuel Beckett in "Le Petit Cafe".

. 8°. 18-line statement of John on the front pastedown of a paperback (John Fletcher - "About Beckett: the playwright & the work). Ink on paper - John wrote this on his trip to Vietnam in 2009. Dated "1st December 2009 - Ho Chi Minh City". / Also included: "John Minihan - Beckett fotografieren. 5 pages. Detmold, Literaturbüro, 1996. (Tells the story of how Minihan meets Beckett and how the "Le Petit Cafe"-picture was taken. In german language). Signed by John Minihan//. John had the habit of conserving his thoughts (while travelling) immediately on every paper reachable. Often this lead to him using covers or pastedowns of books. This wonderful autograph is extraordinary because it is the only existing handwritten statement we are aware of - that deals with the development of the story around the Samuel Beckett-photograph John is reknown for. "1st December 2009 - Ho-Chi-Minh-City - Someone recently asked me what did i say to Samuel Beckett to get him to pose for what now became an Icon Picture of the writer; well i did not have to say much - for Sam was very much the Director in the picture that i took; yes i knew where i wanted him; yes i knew what Lens i would use; yes I wanted to place him in Paris - But the eyes (,) the way he (was) gazing into space; that's all him, thats how he wante to be percevered" John Minihan is an Irish photographer, born in Dublin in 1946 and raised in Athy, County Kildare. At the age of 12 he was brought to live in London, and went on to become an apprentice photographer with the Daily Mail. At the age of 15 he won the Evening Standard amateur photography competition. At 21 he became the youngest staff photographer for the Evening Standard. For thirty years he remained in London, returning every year to his hometown of Athy to record the people and their daily lives. The work of Minihan in Athy makes up a large part of his canon. Minihan began taking photos in Athy when he was 16. The photos are an attempt to document the lives of the ordinary people of the town in their day to day business and also in times of joy and sadness, notably during the wake of a woman called Katy Tyrrell. In between documenting Athy on visits home, Minihan continued his career on Fleet Street, which included the iconic snap of the 19-year-old Lady Diana Spencer in the garden of the nursery at which she worked, the morning sun to her back, her legs in silhouette through her skirt. Diana had just been announced as the Prince of Wales's love interest and photographers raced to take her photo, Minihan having the fortune to turn up first. Over the years Minihan developed a close relationship with many writers and his photographs of Samuel Beckett show a particular affinity between the two men. Minihans photos of Beckett are some of his best known, one in particular is described as one of the greatest photos of the twentieth century. William S. Burroughs once referred to Minihan as "a painless photographer". Minihan is perhaps best known for his photographs of Samuel Beckett. Minihan first expressed a desire to photograph Beckett in 1969, following Becketts winning of the Nobel Prize for literature, having noticed that all the available photos of Beckett were of a poor quality; 'We were running a story but discovered there were only two very vague images of Beckett taken many years before. It was like he didn't exist - that was the moment I decided I wanted to meet this man and take his photograph.' Minihan first encountered Beckett in London in 1980, while Beckett was working on a production of one of his own plays, Endgame. Minihan met Beckett in the Hyde Park hotel and showed him some of his photos of Athy to break the ice. The two met on a number of occasions over the next few years, but it was not until 1985 that they met in Paris. They arranged to meet in the restaurant of the Hotel PLM, a regular haunt of Beckett. At ten to five, with the light fading, Minihan took the photo that would go on to be called by some as the photograph of the twentieth century. John Calder credited Minihan with capturing, 'the introspective, infinitely sad gaze of a man looking into the abyss of the world's woes'. Among his numerous photographic publications are Photographs: Samuel Beckett (1995); Shadows from the Pale, Portrait of an Irish Town (1996); and An Unweaving of Rainbows, Images of Irish Writers, 1996. He is currently a freelance photographer specialising in 'the arts'. His book of photographs of Samuel Beckett was published in 1995. His photographs of Athy have been exhibited throughout the world. He was given the freedom of Athy in 1990. Minihan currently lives and works in West Cork. Minihan's many exhibitions in museums and galleries around the world include the Museum of Modern Art, Rio de Janeiro, 1984; Centre Georges Pompidou, Paris 1986; the National Portrait Gallery, London 1987/8 and the October Gallery, London 1990 as well as the Guinness Hop Store, Dublin 1991.         Seven Stories

Göttingen:: Steidl Verlag,, 2009. Göttingen: Steidl Verlag, 2009. First edition. 7 volumes with the original slipcase. Signed twice by Robert Frank, once in volume 1 and on the front of the slipcase. Each volume is in fine condition, as is the box. Seven Stories brings together sequences of single images Frank has been compiling to create books of new work. As always the photographs and stories relate to Frank's life and milieu, his homes in Mabou and New York, or a trip to China or Spain. This collection of small books is a new stage in the practice of this remarkable artist who continually challenges the limits of photography and film and strives to avoid repeating himself.Robert Frank is the photographer of the classic work "The Americans" and has been compared to a modern-day de Tocqueville for his original perspective of American society. He was born in Switzerland, and though he was initially optimistic about United States society and culture, Frank came to believe the fast pace of American life derived from an overemphasis on money. His photography is an honest portrayal of an often bleak and lonely urbanized country.

The books are printed using photopolymer plates on a Vandercook proofing press.& & "With the prospects of a Mormon press came the possibility of printing Joseph Smith's revelation and making them more widely available to the members of the Church. At a conference in Hiram, Ohio, in November 1831, it was resolved to print the revelations in book form under the title Book of Commandments in an edition of 10,000. Five months later, when Joseph Smith, Sidney Rigdon, and other journeyed to Independence with paper for the new Mormon press, the size of the edition was reduced to 3000. Five signatures comprising 160 pages had been printed when the printing shop was destroyed on July 20, 1833 by an angry anti-Mormon mob. Sheets of the unfinished book were salvaged from the wreckage of the shop; some were collected as they blew about the streets of Independence. From these sheets a few copies of the Book of Commandments were assembled. Twenty-nine copies have surfaced in 176 years, most in homemade bindings - a reflection of the salvaged nature of the book. The title page occurs in two states, with and without an ornamental border.& & Just what the completed Book of Commandments would have contained is a matter of conjecture. Considering those revelations published earlier in the Star and those published subsequently in the Doctrine and Covenants, it would appear that the completed book would have contained at least one and possibly two additional signatures." - Peter Crawley.

        The Age of Orphans

Bloomsbury, 2009. 1st printing 1st. Hardcover. Fine/Fine. Signed by Author. Fine unread copy in likewise fine dw - SIGNED by the authoress. Synopsis: Kurdistan, Persia. A village high in the Zagros mountains. A small green-eyed boy wrestles free from his mother and climbs atop a straw and mud hut to gaze at the dusty landscape; the jagged mountains and azure sky, the cattle in the distance. With his arms stretched out beside him he pretends to be a bird, to lift up and soar over this land: the land of his fathers and forefathers. Kurdish land. Soon after the boy is ritually initiated into manhood, messengers from the hills bring whispers of war; rumours that the Shah's army is moving from village to village, stamping out any tribal rebellion that may stand in the way of the creation of a unified 'Iran'. Just nine years old, the boy must stand alongside his men and fight for their land. Years later, Reza Pahlavi Khourdi can only faintly recall the brutal murder of his father and cousins. Orphaned on the bloody battlefield, conscripted into the great column of the army and given a new name, he has quickly risen up the ranks, proving both his prowess in battle and allegiance to the Shah's troops. Now in Tehran, Reza is about to marry to a beautiful, educated, city girl, and become a Capitian. But there are stirrings within his heart. He will soon move west to be the Shah's servant in Kermanshah, the land of his birth, and a figurehead of modernization. At once rich and bleak, The Age of Orphans unleashes a tapestry of untold horrors and pleasures, of blood and smoke, hopes, dreams and desires. It is a profound and darkly poetic story of a land roughly sewn together under the ambitious imagining of a nation, and of the life of a boy whose identity does not - can not - unite with this vision

Longlisted for 2012 Orange Prize for Fiction. Synopsis: The Forgotten Waltz is a memory of desire: a recollection of the bewildering speed of attraction, the irreparable slip into longing. In Terenure, a pleasant suburb of Dublin, in the winter of 2009, it has snowed. Gina Moynihan, girl about town, recalls the trail of lust and happenstance that brought her to fall for Ôthe love of her lifeÕ, Se‡n Vallely. As the city outside comes to a halt, Gina remembers the days of their affair in one hotel room or another: long afternoons made blank by bliss and denial. Now, as the silent streets and the stillness and vertigo of the falling snow make the day luminous and full of possibility, Gina walks through the weather to meet a girl she calls his Ôbeautiful mistakeÕ: Se‡nÕs fragile, twelve-year-old daughter, Evie. Anne Enright was born in Dublin, where she now lives and works. She has published two volumes of stories, collected as YesterdayÕs Weather, one book of non-fiction, Making Babies, and four novels, most recently The Gathering, which was the Irish Novel of the Year and won the Irish Fiction Award and the 2007 Man Booker Prize.

Chatto & Windus, 2009. 1st printing 1st. Hardcover. Fine/Fine. Signed by Author. Fine unread SIGNED copy of this increasingly rare book. Signed by author on tipped-in page preceding title page/front endpaper. Fine/Mint condition. INCLUDED is the scarce UK first promo advance sampler. Synopsis: This Faustian story with a terrifying twist is the fictional memoir of Dr. Max Aue, a former SS intelligence officer, who has reinvented himself as a family man and owner of a lace factory in post-war France. Max is an intellectual steeped in philosophy, literature, and classical music. He is also a cold-blooded assassin and the consummate bureaucrat, who speaks out now not in self-justification but to set the record straight. He looks back at his life with cool-eyed precision: from a disrupted childhood and a turning point in his student days, to his role as observer and then participant in Nazi atrocities on the Eastern Front, from Poland to the Caucasus; he is present at the siege of Stalingrad, at the death camps, and finally caught up in the rout of the Nazis and the nightmarish fall of Berlin.Although Max is a totally imagined character, his world is peopled by real historical figures such as Eichmann, Himmler, Goring, Speer, Heydrich, Hoss, and Hitler himself. Massive in scope, terrifying in subject matter, and shocking in its protagonist, Littell's masterpiece is intense, hallucinatory, and terrifyingly compelling. Described by Le Figaro as 'a monument of contemporary literature', this transgressive work has been compared to classics of world literature, including War and Peace. A huge novel about the seductive enormity of evil, the ineffable horror of war, man's inhumanity and the malevolence of the Furies, this is a book that every thinking person should read and to which no one can be indifferent.

        Fragments of Prayers #3

Pasadena, MD. 2009. Artist's book, unique copy, the third of three in a series each in a different format, of Sanskrit mantra, Om mani padme hum, on heavy-weight St. Armand paper, with artist's statement printed out on separate sheet and enclosed with book. Page size: 6.875 x 8 x 6.875 x 6 inches; 60 leaves. Bound by the artist: Photo Carousel style binding using black paper and housed in custom-made box of tan and black paper over boards, as the pages do not lie flat nicely like those in FRAGMENTS OF PRAYERS 2, and the artist wanted them to look like a slide carousel so they are housed in a round box inspired by a CD container. bound with black grosgrain ribbon with the title painted and lettered on another piece of St. Armand heavy weight paper, FRAGMENTS OF PRAYERS #3, in black ink, set into tan label attached with black grosgrain label and signed Elizabeth McKee and dated 2009. The text, Om Mani Padme Hum, has been painted and hand-lettered in gesso, sumi, walnut ink and white gouache with sixty different tools, thirty on each side on a sheet of white heavy-weight St. Armand paper. The artist then tore the sheet into sixty pieces for binding. The chant, Om Mani Padme Hum, is particularly associated with the four-armed Shadakshari form of Avalokiteshvara, the bodhisattva of compassion. Mani means "jewel" and padma means "the lotus flower" the Buddhist Sacred Flower. The chant is commonly carved into rocks - called "mani stones" - or written on paper and inserted into prayer wheels. When the wheel is spun, it is said to have the same effect as reciting the mantra as many times as it is duplicated within the wheel. Talented book artist and calligrapher, Elizabeth Mckee's own aesthetic has enabled her to create a completely contemporary version of this ancient form for presenting a text.

        Sunnyside

Sceptre, 2009. 1st printing 1st. Hardcover. Fine/Fine. Signed by Author. Fine unread copy of UK edition - SIGNED by the author to title page. From the author of the acclaimed CARTER BEATS THE DEVIL comes a grand entertainment with the brilliantly realized figure of Charlie Chaplin at its centre: a novel at once cinematic and intimate, thrilling and darkly comic, which dramatizes the moment when American capitalism, a world at war, and the emerging mecca of Hollywood intersect to spawn an enduring culture of celebrity. SUNNYSIDE follows three overlapping fortunes: Leland Wheeler, son of the last (and worst) Wild West star, as he heads to the battlefields of France; snobbish Hugo Black, drafted to fight in Russia under the British general, Edmund Ironside; and Chaplin himself, contending with studio moguls, accusations of cowardice, his unchecked heart and, most menacing of all, his mother, as he pursues the goal of making a movie 'as good as he was'. With a cast of enthralling characters both historical and fictional, SUNNYSIDE is a heart-rending, spellbinding novel about dreams, ambition and the dawn of the modern age.

        Her Fearful Symmetry

Jonathan Cape, 2009. Hardcover. Fine/n/a. Signed by Author. Limited Collector's edition published by Jonathan Cape. Book isÊBrand NewÊin slipcase and still sealed in the publisher's shrinkwrap. SIGNED AND NUMBERED LimitedÊEdition. "Julia and Valentina Poole are normal American teenagers - normal, at least, for identical 'mirror' twins who have no interest in college or jobs or possibly anything outside their cozy suburban home. But everything changes when they receive notice that an aunt whom they didn't know existed has died and left them her flat in an apartment block overlooking Highgate Cemetery in London. They feel that at last their own lives can begin .but have no idea that they've been summoned into a tangle of fraying lives, from the obsessive-compulsive crossword setter who lives above them to their aunt's mysterious and elusive lover who lives below them, and even to their aunt herself, who never got over her estrangement from the twins' mother - and who can't even seem to quite leave her flat. With Highgate Cemetery itself a character and echoes of Henry James and Charles Dickens, "Her Fearful Symmetry" is a delicious and deadly twenty-first-century ghost story about Niffenegger's familiar themes of love, loss and identity. It is certain to cement her standing as one of the most singular and remarkable novelists of our time"Ê
