        Turkey Trot

Leonia, NJ. 2007. Artist's Book, one of 25 copies, on pink paper (for wrapping tacos) with tan paper on which text is printed courtesy of Sally Lowe, each copy signed and numbered in deep rose-colored ink. Page size: 9-7/8 x 5 inches (at widest point) and 2 inches at tip; 12pp. Bound by the artist, Lois Morrison: loose with two grommets at top of page and laced with rainbow silk thread, boards covered with yellow, green, brown cloth with all over grass pattern in shape of turkey foot, with turkey foot from La Gurilla (Mexico City) on front board, wrapped in red, yellow, blue and green fruit patterned Mexican oilcloth. Printed by the artist on a Gocco printer and using a Staedtler Mars master cut block. The typeface is Ill Omen. There are two pop-ups of turkeys on the first and last pages; the other pages are collage and original prints that have been heightened with Pigma pens by hand. The text, "These feet / were made / for trotting / and that's / just what / they'll do. / One of / these days / they'll just / trot away / from you." is printed in light brown on tan "labels" on each page. The prints on the pages are in green, black, blue , gray, etc., and are of thick woody areas. There are red gates and flying turkeys - some of the turkeys are laser printed. Plastic, Tyvek and Frasier's passport paper are all used in the inventive collages that comprise each page. Pop up turkeys? Turkey feet? What more could anyone want in an artist's book?!         The Children of Hurin - UK Deluxe Edition Signed By Christopher Tolkien & Alan Lee on Publishers Bookplate

London: Harper Collins, 2007. 1st Edition. Hard Cover. Alan Lee. Signed by Illustrator & Editor. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. The Children of Hurin by J.R.R. Tolkien, published April 2007 by Harper Collins. Signed by the editor and illustrator, Christopher Tolkien and Alan Lee, to special bookplate, featuring Lee's motif of the Helm of Hador, attached to the half title page. "The Children of Hurin, UK De Luxe Edition The first standalone tale of Middle-earth since 1977, and the first complete version of one of J.R.R. Tolkien's 'Great Tales', with many exclusive features:" "Drawing together J.R.R. Tolkiens original manuscripts, using many sources spaced out over decades, Christopher Tolkien has constructed a narrative without any editorial invention." "Includes a brand new red and black Map of Beleriand specially drawn by Christopher Tolkien, which appears as a fold-out sheet." "Contains eight colour paintings and twenty-five pencil sketches, specially commissioned from award-winning artist, Alan Lee." "Features an exclusive colour frontispiece painting by Alan Lee." "Includes a specially written introduction and appendix on the history and writing of the tale by Christopher Tolkien." "Quarter-bound in blue with grey boards, stamped in gold foil with a unique motif of the Helm of Hador created by Alan Lee, and housed in a matching custom-built slipcase." "Printed on superior quality paper and including a silk ribbon marker." "This edition available for a limited time only." With Houghton Mifflin wishing to reach out and do something special for the loyal Tolkien fans, along with Christopher Tolkien's reluctance to grant public appearances, they conceived the idea for a signed bookplate, which Christopher Tolkien and Alan Lee both agreed to. It seems approximately 900 bookplates were signed, with less than 500 for distribution in the US, and 250 for the UK, with the remainder held for other promotions. I know of three that were given away as prizes on the Tolkien Library web site, during the "Children of Hurin" Release Party. A very hard to find edition, with the signed bookplate. Don't expect to see many of these for sale, as most will end up in private collections. This Deluxe Edition is matched in style and design to the 50th Anniversary Deluxe Edition of 'The Lord of the Rings', and The Deluxe Hobbit that were concurrently issued in 2004. Digital photo's available, inquire if interested. Other Tolkien books available, include both the UK and US editions, original cloth bindings, custom fine bindings, and Signed/Numbered/Limited Editions.. Signed by Illustrator & Editor. 1st Edition. Hard Cover. As New/No Jacket, as Issued. Illus. by Alan Lee. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. As New / No Jacket, as Issued.

        Alpha Botanica

[Portland, Oregon:] Wiesdruck, [2007] One of thirty-three black and white copies out of a total edition of forty-five copies. . Bound by Claudia Cohen in full black morocco with all-over botanical design in gilt. Gilt floral endpapers. . 4 15/16" x 4 3/4." . Printed on handmade Velke Losiny Moravia paper, some of which is from twenty year-old stock. The text is set in Dante italic. Fine in fine publisher's slipcase. The alphabet project began in the fall of 2004 with a few trial capitals and many sketches to ascertain the viability of a Yiddish-English book of poems illustrated with engraved images and capitals. From this grew designs for two sets of botanical alphabets, one Roman and one Hebrew. "Alpha Botanica evolved out these alphabets for Paper Towers and became a collaboration with bookbinder extraordinaire, Claudia Cohen. The remainder of the capitals were engraved by the summer of 2006…" (Wiesdruck Press website).

        ON THE BEACH

New York City, NY: Aperture Foundation, 2007. First Edition. First Printing.. Hardcover. As New/As New Dust Jacket.. New York City, NY: Aperture Foundation, 2007. Hardcover. As New/As New. First Edition/First Printing. 80 pages. Exhibition catalog presented as an Artist Book. One of the greatest photography books of our time. The first and only edition. The single largest book ever published by the Aperture Foundation. Published in a very small and limited one-time-only print run as a hardcover original. The book is now rare. A magnificent production by Richard Misrach, Fabio Cutro, and Dana Faconti: Oversize-volume format in wide oblong shape. The book weighs 12 pounds. Pictorial hard boards, as issued. Photographs and text by Richard Misrach. Publisher&#39;s original cardboard box. The box is integral to the edition because it is printed on one side with the title, ISBN, and original publication price. Printed on thick coated stock paper to the very highest standards. In thick plastic covers with titles on the cover and spine, as issued. Published on the occasion of the travelling exhibition which commenced at the Art Institute of Chicago in November, 2007 and went on to other major venues in 2008. Presents Misrach&#39;s singular vision of the sea as the ultimate visual manifestation of Man&#39;s vulnerability and fragility in our perilous times. The book is the most oblique (and therefore compelling) photographic meditation on the meaning of 9/11 thus far. "Internationally renowned for his carefully considered, beautifully rendered epic works, Misrach hones in on our delicate relationship to the sea. Light, color, and form are crucial components. In this body of work he uses a gorgeous, slowly shifting color palette gleaned from changes in depth and tide, abstract patterns of waves and rippling water, and beaches both empty and cluttered. Throughout the series, Misrach carefully balances the minutiae of human gesture against the massive scale of the sea" (Aperture Foundation). "My thinking about this work was influenced by the events of 9/11, particularly by the images of individuals and couples falling from the World Trade Towers. Paradise has become an uneasy dwelling place; the sublime sea frames our vulnerability, and the precarious nature of life itself" (Richard Misrach). A "must-have" title for Richard Misrach collectors. <b><i> This copy is very prominently and beautifully signed in metallic-silver marker on the title page by Richard Misrach. It is signed directly on the page itself, not on a tipped-in page or bookplate. Misrach signed very few copies of the book. This title is now highly collectible. This is one of few signed copies still available online, is still in the publisher&#39;s original cardboard box, and has no flaws, a pristine beauty. A rare signed copy thus. </b></i> 38 color plates, 9 of which are doublespreads. One of the greatest living American photographers. A flawless collectible copy. (SEE ALSO OTHER RICHARD MISRACH TITLES IN OUR CATALOG). ISBN 1597110485.

Bloomsbury London: Bloomsbury. 1999-2007. The first printings of the deluxe editions of the full Harry Potter series. Clothbound with pictorial onlays, all edges gilt; fine without dust jackets, as issued. The Azkaban, which was the first volume published in a British deluxe edition (Philosopher's Stone and Chamber being issued in a deluxe edition retroactively) had the smallest printing, (reportedly 7000 copies) and names "Joanne Rowling" rather than "J.K. Rowling" on the copyright page. Here together with the collector's edition of The Tales of Beedle the Bard [London: Children's High Level Group, 2008]. The leatherbound Beedle is in a drawstring bag, which, with ten illustrations by Rowling, are housed together in a large box made to look like a textbook, which is contained in the publisher's sleeve.       Flying Fish Press Berkeley, CA: Flying Fish Press. 2007. One of 100 copies, each signed and numbered on the inside of the box by the author, artist, and designer, Julie Chen. Box: 13-3/4 x 6-1/4 x 4-3/4 inches, wrapped in dull gold and oyster white Japanese book cloths with title printed in black on green paper label; closure in green paper and oyster-colored book cloth over book board with title printed in black; closure with magnet and corresponding magnet in case. The box contains two books: MISE EN SCENE and AFTERIMAGE, both printed letterpress. MISE EN SCENE is printed on a single long sheet of grey paper with laser cut outs. The page is inserted between the top lighter grey page and the bottom grey- green page. The cut-out text on gray paper gives the illusion of floating freely in space when the book is opened. MISE EN SCENE is bound accordion style with green cloth over boards with a lighter grey-green cloth and paper label in green printed with title in black and sewn with grey thread on the exterior edge. AFTERIMAGE text is printed in black on grey-green paper that is bound accordion style between double fold of green paper silkscreen printed with tree limbs in darker green. The text is behind Mylar and appears in laser cutouts in the page spread. The two books are housed on each side of the box. In the center of the box is a still life of water and trees. This diorama is made of concrete, resin with trees made for architectural models and is behind Plexiglas that is hinged at the top and can be opened from the bottom. Once again, Ms. Chen has created an intricate book / object. The execution is flawless, but not simply as a display of virtuosity. Rather, the physical object is designed to engage the reader / viewer in conveying her text, and she succeeds admirably. See an Image.

Bluebird. Autograph musical manuscript of a setting for two female voices with instrumental accompaniment of Herman Melville's poem, "Bluebird." A complete working draft

5 pp. Folio (355 x 280 mm.). Notated in pencil with additional markings in coloured ink. Signed and dated 2007. . Tsontakis studied with Hugo Weisgall, Felix Greissle and Roger Sessions. His honours include the Charles Ives Living Award, the Grawemeyer, two Kennedy Center Friedheim Awards (1989, 1992), a lifetime achievement award from the American Academy of Arts and Letters (1995), a Guggenheim Memorial Fellowship (1996) and numerous commissions. "[His] early works are written in a dissonant chromatic idiom not unlike that of Sessions. His musical language soon shifted, however, towards a classically-influenced style characterized by large-scale harmonic prolongations and what he calls 'the timeless gesture', a reference to the past through evocation rather than quotation. With the String Quartet no. 3 'Carragio' (1986) he arrived at an idiosyncratic tonal language propelled by a non-minimalist, Beethovenian use of repetition. Another primary feature of his work, particularly notable in the Byzantium Kanon (1986) and Stabat mater (1990), is the influence of sacred music of the Greek Orthodox church. Secular folk music of the same region figures prominently in the oratorio Erotokritos (1982) and other works." Eric Moe in Grove online
