New York: Garland Publishers, 1988. 4 Vols. 2,428 pp. Illustrated. Reprinted 2007 by The Lawbook Exchange, Ltd. Set ISBN-13: 9781584777403. Set ISBN-10: 1584777400. Hardcover. New. * Reprinted from the series Slavery, Race and the American Legal System, 1700-1872, this set contains facsimiles of 56 rare pamphlets relating to court cases involving fugitive slaves. "These...volumes belong in every library used for research, and in particular at all law school libraries. They will prove valuable to historians, lawyers, law teachers and students, and all persons interested in the problems of slavery and race in American experience.": William M.         JULIUS SHULMAN: MODERNISM REDISCOVERED - SIGNED BY THE PHOTOGRAPHER

(SHULMAN, JULIUS). Shulman, Julius, Hunter Drohojowska-Philp, Owen Edwards, Philip J. Ethington & Peter Loughrey. JULIUS SHULMAN: MODERNISM REDISCOVERED - SIGNED BY THE PHOTOGRAPHER. Signed by the Photographer. Koln, GERMANY: Benedikt Taschen Verlag, 2007. First Edition. Small Folio. Cloth in Slipcase. Photography Monograph. Fine/No Jackets - As Issued. 1008pp, profusely illustrated in color and b&w. Text in English, German and French. "Julius Shulman's photography was instrumental in crafting the image of the midcentury Southern California lifestyle across the United States and around the world. His work keenly identifies the distinctive structural, functional, and design elements of a building, in the context of both its natural surroundings and the people who occupy the spaces. This sensitivity, combined with his intuitive and brilliant sense of composition and timing, has earned him the reputation as a master of the genre. This extensive, three-volume set presents over four hundred architectural gems into the spotlight. Not just restricted to the West Coast, the images were taken all across the United States as well as in Mexico, Israel, and Hong Kong. Each project and photograph in these volumes was personally selected from over 260,000 photographs over a two-year period by publisher Benedikt Taschen". Featured architects and designers include William Beckett, Craig Ellwood, Albert Frey, Frank Gehry, Bruce Goff, Herb Greene, Philip Johnson, Louis I. Kahn, Raymond Kappe, Pierre Koenig, John Lautner, Paul Laszlo, Le Corbusier, Charles Luckman, Ludwig Mies van der Rohe, Oscar Niemeyer, Richard J. Neutra, William L. Pereira, R.M. Schindler, Skidmore, Owings & Merrill, Raphael Soriano, Welton Becket Associates, Frank Lloyd Wright, and many more. A pristine slipcased set SIGNED by Julius Shulman in ink on the title page of the first volume, still in the publisher's printed shipping box and shrinkwrap that has been discreetly opened for the photographer's signature.         Die Gesetze der Angelsachsen. 4 Vols. in 3 books. Complete set

2007. Liebermann, Felix. Die Gesetze der Angelsachsen. Halle a. S., M. Niemeyer, 1898-1912. 4 Vols. in 3 books. lxii, 675; viii, 758; [6], 356 pp. ISBN-13: 9781584778363. ISBN-10: 1584778369. Reprinted 2007 by The Lawbook Exchange, Ltd. Cloth. New. * Text in Anglo-Saxon, Latin and German. "Liebermann's edition has superseded all others; and has gone a long way towards providing us with a complete text of the materials for the history of English law both before the Conquest, and also of that confused period which lies between the Conquest and the reign of Henry II. (.)For this edition Liebermann examined about one hundred and eighty manuscripts in more than forty libraries in England and on the continent. He does not content himself with giving us a single text. He gives us in parallel columns the texts of all the leading manuscripts of the Anglo-Saxon laws, in the notes are divergent readings, and, on the opposite page, are passages from the post-Conquest literature based on these laws. As Maitland says, the book looks like the full score of an opera.' And, in addition to the texts, Liebermann has given us an account of the former editions, a dictionary of Anglo-Saxon and Latin words, a subject glossary, introductions to, and a commentary on, the laws. The book is thus far more than a text of the Anglo-Saxon laws and Anglo-Norman law books. The texts are explained; and, in the glossary, the material is not only collected under appropriate headings, it is systematically arranged in the form of concise essays, which contain many relevant references to other Germanic bodies of law, and to other Anglo-Norman sources. It is, as Professor Hazeltine has said, one of the finest products of the new historical school of the nineteenth century.": Holdsworth, The Historians of Anglo-American Law 127-128.

Limited to one thousand signed copies only, this beautifully designed and printed Taschen undertaking presents over three hundred of Neil Leifer's extraordinary baseball images of the sixties and seventies. "From the 1960 World Series between the Yankees and the Pirates to the 1977 Series between the Yankees and the Dodgers, Neil Leifer never stopped shooting.         MARIO TESTINO: LET ME IN - DELUXE LIMITED SLIPCASED EDITION SIGNED BY THE PHOTOGRAPHER

(TESTINO, MARIO). Testino, Mario. Introduction by Michael Roberts. Foreword by Nicole Kidman.. MARIO TESTINO: LET ME IN - DELUXE LIMITED SLIPCASED EDITION SIGNED BY THE PHOTOGRAPHER. Signed by the Photographer. Koln, GERMANY: Benedikt Taschen Verlag, 2007. First Edition 1/1000 Deluxe. Folio. Cloth in Dust Jacket, Slipcase. Photography Monograph. As New./As New.. 306pp, profusely illustrated in color and b&w. "As one of the 21st Century's most traveled, acclaimed, and influential fashion photographers, Mario Testino has unsurpassed access to the most magnetic stars of popular culture. For some time now he has been collecting a personal archive of off-screen moments, often snatched spontaneously before, during, and after more official sittings for "Vanity Fair", "Vogue", and Testino's many clients in the world of fashion. The result is a portrait not just of a generation of the most wanted and talked-about, but an invitation to be part of the backstage parties and unstaged moments of Testino's life. Sometimes offbeat, but always on the pulse, "Let Me In!", with Testino's eye for a modern kind of elegance liberated from conventional polish, is a new chapter from the photographer who has already made his mark with the books "Any Objections", "Front Row Backstage", "Alive", "Portraits", "Kids", "Diana Princess of Wales", and numerous exhibitions and publications worldwide". Limited to one thousand copies only, this massive tome is one of the most lavish glances behind the veil of celebrity yet published.         ARCHAEOLOGY IN REVERSE

London, England: Nobody/Archive Of Modern Conflict, 2007. First Edition. First Printing.. Hardcover. As New/No Dust Jacket, As Issued.. London, England: Nobody/Archive Of Modern Conflict, 2007. Hardcover. As New/None, As Issued. First Edition/First Printing. Unpaginated. Artist Book. Now considered a contemporary photography classic. Limited Clamshell Edition of 100 numbered and signed copies. Should not be confused with the Limited Edition of 3000 copies. The edition is now rare. An austerely elegant production by Stephen Gill and Melanie Mues: Regular-sized volume format. Mustard cloth boards with orange design on the cover and orange titles embossed on spine, as issued. Photographs by Stephen Gill. Text by Iain Sinclair. Brown cloth clamshell box. 7.5 X 8.5 inch color print encased in its own sleeve and laid-in. Printed on thick coated stock paper by EBS in Verona, Italy to the highest standards. Without DJ, as issued. Presents one of three conceptually inventive photography books published simultaneously by Stephen Gill (the other two are "Hackney Flowers" and "Anonymous Origami"). "Stephen Gill has learned this: To haunt the places that haunt him. His photo-accumulations demonstrate a tender vision factored out of experience. Alert, watchful, not over-eager, wary of that mendacious conceit, &#39;closure&#39;. There is always flow, momentum, the sense of a man passing through a place that delights him. A sense of stepping down, immediate engagement, politic exchange. What I like about Stephen Gill is that he has learned to give us only as much as we need, the bones of the bones of the bones" (Iain Sinclair). Firmly grounded in the great British documentary tradition, Stephen Gill&#39;s photographs are honest, telling, and brilliant. His conceptual rigor and intelligence, unsentimental empathy for his subjects, and delicate use of color are astonishingly assured (that is, devoid of artistic vanity and self-indulgence) for a photographer who just started taking photographs (in his early 20&#39;s) and already has several published collections and one masterpiece (in his early 30&#39;s). The "object-in-relation-to-place" motif runs throughout Stephen Gill&#39;s oeuvre, and in this book, is especially moving. A "must-have" title for Stephen Gill collectors. <b><i> This copy is one of the Limited Clamshell Box Edition, indicated as such on the Front Limitation Page, and it is very prominently and beautifully numbered and signed in pencil by Stephen Gill. It is also signed in pencil by Iain Sinclair. It comes with a 7.5 X 8.5 inch color print, also very prominently and beautifully signed and dated (in the year of publication) in pencil on verso by the photographer: "Stephen Gill 2007". This edition is now highly collectible. This is one of very few copies of the Limited Clamshell Box Edition still available online and has no flaws, a pristine beauty. A rare signed copy thus. </b></i> 104 plates. Stephen Gill&#39;s "Hackney Wick" was selected as one of the greatest photography books in "The Photobook". One of the most brilliant living photographers. A flawless collectible copy. (SEE ALSO OTHER STEPHEN GILL TITLES IN OUR CATALOG). ISBN 0954940563.

        Suppose One Were A Fish

[Seattle]: Incunabla. 2007. A broadside excerpt from Crowley&#39;s Little, Big, issued in conjunction with what was to be the 25th anniversary edition of Crowley&#39;s World Fantasy Award-winning novel, which is still a work-in-progress but has yet to be published. A 24" x 37" poster, with art by Peter Milton, whose haunting drawings, etchings, engravings and prints were to grace the new edition. When Little, Big was first published, Ursula LeGuin famously wrote that "all by itself it calls for a redefinition of fantasy"; Thomas Disch called it "the greatest fantasy novel ever." The literary critic Harold Bloom listed three books by John Crowley, including Little, Big, in his book The Western Canon. Bloom is listed as providing an Introduction to the anniversary edition of the novel. One can get a sense, from this poster, of the aesthetic of the anniversary volume, as one can from various parts of the above website. The lettered limited edition of the poster, one of 26 lettered copies, this being letter "L," signed by John Crowley, artist Peter Milton, editor John Drummond and book designer John D. Berry. Rolled; else fine. A scarce artifact of a publishing project that is still underway, associated with one of the best-loved and most highly regarded fantasy novels of all time. . First Edition.

        The Rubaiyat of Omar Khayyam

Freeville, N.Y: Carol Schwartzott, 2007 - Number 20 of only 25 signed copies. The text of the first edition (1859) of the Edward FitzGerald translation of the Rubaiyat. Designed by Carol Schwartzott, with her illustrations and binding. Size of the book: 11 in. x 6.5 in. x 1 in. Size of the box: 12 in. x 7.5 in. x1.75 in. The text pages are Mohawk Via vellum, and are printed on an Epson 2000 with archival pigmented inks. The illustration portfolios are on Moab Entrada with original art, scanned and printed on an Epson 2000P; the same illustrations are then overprinted with a linocut to produce opacity and pattern; additional applications of paint, colored pencil and graphite are used to heighten color and detail, and each is finished with gold and silver leaf. The lasercuts are Glama natural clear vellum and the lasercut archways with repeat patterns are printed on an etching press using polymer plates. The marbled dividers are Kozuke Japanese paper and are hand-marbled. The cover is lasercut book-board, painted and fauxed. Underneath is the label with a hand-painted colored background that sits behind the die-cuts of the window. The binding and the drop-lid box are in gray Japanese book-cloth. The box is lined with Ingres Rag paper, hand-printed using a collagraph created from the positive shapes from the archway of the cover. (The foregoing is based on descriptions provided by Ms. Schwartzott.) Artist's Statement: "[.] The completion of this ends my journey of almost ten years. Interestingly, as I worked on its design and reason I really felt it become a more timely piece. For me the Rubaiyat encapsulates the beauty, intellect and mysticism of the Persian world. How lovely to focus on what a culture brings to others instead of the brutality, fear, anger, and enormous sadness that the war in Iraq has conjured up and bestowed upon all of us. I wanted the book to be calm, serene, ethereal, peaceful, tranquil. I chose a quiet solution for the typography, the layers of the illustration portfolios peel away like veils, and little dots of color here and there, along with the gold and silver leaf represent the jeweled covers and illuminated miniatures of rare Persian books. Since marbling was an art invented and developed by the Persians, I used it for a segment divider. A simple binding and protective box completed the presentation." This is, without doubt, one of Carol Schwartzott's finest works. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

        Ani-San, Samukaro? Omae Samukaro

New York: Zucker Art Books, 2007/2008. Fine. Number 8 of 19 copies, of which only 15 were offered for sale. The text is an excerpt taken from "Glimpses of Unfamiliar Japan" by Lafcadio Hearn (1894). The book retells the poignant story of a brother and sister who, unable to pay rent after the death of their parents, are thrown out of their house by the landlord in the middle of winter without even a blanket. Wrapped in their only remaining belongings, blue kimonos, they huddle together behind their house and are buried by snow. The spirits of the children haunt the blanket that their landlord stole from them before turning them out of their home. Anyone sleeping under the blanket can still hear the children&#39;;s voices calling to each other: "Ani-San, Samukaro?" (Elder Brother, are you cold?) "Omae Samukaro" (No, are you cold?). This exquisite book is hand bound using traditional Japanese techniques and is printed on white gampi paper. Nineteen photomicrographs of snow crystals taken by the artists during several snowstorms illustrate the story. The verso of each image is painted with white acrylic and the front is hand-coated with a stroke of varnish. Material from an antique blue patterned kimono wraps around the book and fastens together with a red and white ribbon. Each ribbon end has a small paper flag printed with the questions that form the title. Appropriately, the lining of the kimono is thread bare with several thin tears. A unique snowflake photograph which is printed on gampi paper, coated in encaustic, and signed by both artists accompanies the book. Each book in this edition features a different photograph. A colophon printed on a single sheet of paper and signed by both artists rests beneath the kimono. The book [40 pages], kimono, colophon, and print are housed in a hand crafted bass wood Japanese box which measures 11.75 x 11.75 inches. The widely acclaimed artists who created this masterpiece, Doug and Mike Starn, are identical twins born in New Jersey in 1961. They began collaboratively experimenting with photography at age thirteen and have since expanded into sculpture, installation, video, and painting. The main themes explored in their work involve the relationships between light and dark, past and present, and technology and nature. Images of snowflakes, decaying foliage, ancient statues, Old Master paintings, and nocturnal insects haunt many of their pieces. They are represented in museums around the world including the Metropolitan Musuem of Art (New York), the Corcoran Gallery of Art (Washington, D.C.), the National Gallery of Victoria (Melbourne, Australia), the National Museum of Contemporary Art (South Korea), and many more. They have received two National Endowment for the Arts grants (1987 & 1995), the Infinity Award for Fine Art Photography from the International Center for Photography (1992), and many other awards. Their varying interests have led them to collaborate artistically with Russian author Victor Pelevin, American actor Dennis Hopper, NASA scientists and others. Recently they have been commissioned to create a permanent art installation for the New York Metropolitan Transportation Authority which is scheduled to open in 2008. ARTB/052108m.

Vancouver, BC: Heavenly Monkey Editions, 2007. Leather Bound. Limited Edition, one of only thirty copies. Large square octavo (7 x 9"). [40pp]. With more than twenty illustrations throughout, the majority of which are hand-colored or detailed in some fashion. Bound in an original design by Claudia Cohen, who created a three-piece case, with a leather spine and contrasting fore edges. The boards are covered in an early 20th century European embossed paper, over which a number of different circular leather overlays are placed. Issued in a clamshell box, along with a set of six dry artist&#39;s pigments in wax-sealed glass vials. This copy with an original prospectus and a half dozen original postage stamps created by Barbara Hodgson, several for &#39;The Temperamental Rose&#39;. A Fine copy, as issued. The initial book issued as a triogy of sorts, the other two being &#39;After Image&#39; and &#39;Occupied by Colour.&#39; // "A collaboration between author and book designer Barbara Hodgson, and bookbinder Claudia Cohen. The Temperamental Rose & Other Ways of Seeing Colour was borne during the collaborators&#39; first meeting, in the summer of 2006, when they discovered mutual passions for colour wheels and other systems for charting and codifying colours. Inspired by centuries of colour studies, including those of Johann Wolfgang von Goethe and M.-E. Chevreul, the authors reproduce existing colour wheels as well as create new and fanciful ways of seeing colour. An introductory essay discusses the history of colour, and each of the charts is accompanied by explanatory text. There is also a bibliography and colophon. Designed by Barbara, all of the text and the outlines of the colour charts are printed letterpress from polymer plates by David Clifford of Black Stone Press. She then spent six weeks doing the extensive handwork required to complete each copy. The book is bound by Claudia in a three-piece case, with leather spine and fore edges. The boards are covered in an early 20th century European embossed paper, over which a number of different circular leather overlays are placed. The book (7 x 9 inches, 40 pp) is issued in a clamshell box, along with a set of six dry artist&#39;s pigments in wax-sealed glass vials. Due to the amount of handwork involved with each copy, the edition was just 30 numbered and five AP copies. (Available by advance order to subscribers only, copies 1-8 included an original hand-coloured wheel considered for, but ultimately not used in the book.) &#39;The Temperamental Rose&#39; was fully subscribed prior to publication."~ from the publisher.
