Dream Baby Dream: Images from the Blank Generation (First Edition, inscribed to Patti Smith)

Los Angeles: 2.13.61 Publications, 2007. First Edition. First Edition of the uncommon hardcover issue. Inscribed by the author at the first blank to one of the book's subjects, Patti Smith: "To Patti / with Love / Stephanie." Chernikowski's photo monograph documents the New York punk scene of the late 1970s and early 1980s with candor and heartbreaking affection, capturing a world that has been forever erased. Featured in their glorious youth are the expected (Stiv Bators, Johnny Ramone, Johnny Thunders, Patti Smith, John Lydon, David Byrne) and the somewhat unexpected (Brian Eno, Marianne Faithfull, Glenn Branca, William S. Burroughs). A great association. Fine with no dust jacket as issued.

        Barcelona silente

Tinta Invisible 2007 - 6 De coleccionista-como nuevo. Collector's item- as new. In excellent conditions. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

Beyond the 6th Extinction: A Fifth Millennium Bestiary

[Chicago]: Paperboy Press. 2007. Artist's book, one of 15 copies only, all on handmade cotton / abaca paper, book board, and Arches watercolor board and linen thread, each numbered and signed in pencil by the artist, Shawn Sheehy, on the colophon. Page size: 6-7/8 x 10 inches; 22pp; one of which is colophon and one front pastedown. Bound by the artist: this copy tan paper over boards, tan re-purposed leather spine (variations in leather from copy to copy) with green paper strip marking join (variations in paper from copy to copy); pages hinged with tabs, endpages glued to boards to accommodate extremely thick pages with the popups. There are 8 remarkable pop-ups of mythical creatures in their mythical habitat; the names of the creatures are lettered in cut-out along the last quarter of each recto. The creatures in this fantasy bestiary (although based on actual organisms that are known survivors) are: Rex Roach, Clam Fungus, Dreadhead, Peteybug, Brownfield Pigeon, Bloomworm, Snapdragon, and Rotrap. & The artist tells us that in Richard Leakey's book, THE SIXTH EXTINCTION, the five major catastrophes in Earth's history are delineated. Leakey theorizes that the sixth major extinction has begun, and it is human authored. Mr. Sheehy has used this as the starting point of BEYOND THE 6TH EXTINCTION, postulating a look at existing creatures in the year 4297 - which are phenomenally large and reproduced here in smaller size - using the ubiquitous polymer-based digital storage unit (CD) on each page to establish size. The text is set digitally in Joanna and printed from polymer plates. The papers used to construct these creatures are in tans, grays, whites, and subdued blues and greens. They are spiky, scaly, and creepy. They are certainly ingenious representations of the sort of creature that might actually survive the chaos created by humankind. This is a book of fabulous creatures - ingeniously constructed - to give the reader / viewer cause to worry about the future of planet Earth and its inhabitants.
See an Image.
(Miniature) I, Robot: Three Laws of Robotics

(Loket, Czech Republic: Jan and Jarmila Sobota, 2007). Sixteen panels, accordion-fold. One of thirty copies, signed by the artists. A short but pointed exigesis on the words "robot," which was first used by the Czech playwright Karel Kapek, and "robotics," first used by the Russian-born Isaac Asimov in one of his short stories. According to the Sobotas, the word "robot" derives from a Czech word meaning forced labor, or serf. The accordian-fold panels on which the text leaves are mounted fold ingeniously into a compartment in the back of a 2 3/4-inch tall metal robot, who wears an ear to ear grin. A metal panel closes the compartment, and is held in place by a magnet affixed to the back of the robot's head. The front of the robot is engraved with three lines: Karel Kapek / I, Robot / Isaac Asimov. Housed in a suede-lined folding box, which has the appearance of metal. Mint.

Reorganization of the Federal Judiciary: Committee Hearings. 3 Vols.

2007 - United States Senate. Reorganization of the Federal Judiciary. Hearings before the Committee on the Judiciary, United States Senate, Seventy-fifth Congress, First Session, on S. 1392, a Bill to Reorganize the Judicial Branch of the Government. Washington: Government Printing Office, 1937. 2040, 49 pp. 6 parts, in 3 vols. Reprinted 2007 by The Lawbook Exchange, Ltd. Set ISBN-13: 9781584778080. Set ISBN-10: 1584778083. Hardcover. New. * Complete reprint of the sole edition. Includes the Adverse Report, and Hearings, Part 1 to 6. This set of hearing transcripts and the texts of supporting documents chronicles the history of Franklin D. Roosevelt's court-packing plan and its defeat in the United States Senate. Angered by the Court's hostility to legislation relating to the New Deal, Roosevelt proposed a bill to expand the membership of the court on February 5, 1937. Presented as a way to increase efficiency, it was intended to create seats for justices who would support the New Deal. The resulting struggle was a critical episode in Roosevelt's presidency and one of the nastiest clashes between the executive and judiciary in American history. Roosevelt's plan failed, but the debate had a profound effect on the Court's attitude toward the New Deal, which lead many to believe that the president was ultimately successful. Seipp, Professor of Law, Boston University, with Carol F. Lee of the District of Columbia Bar. Reprinted 2007 by The Lawbook Exchange, Ltd. Set: ISBN-13: 9781584777816; ISBN-10: 1584777818. Hardcover, folio (9" x 14"). * Reprint of the Vulgate edition, with new detailed introductions that address the history, content and significance of The Year Books, and tables that list all justices and sergeants, as well as calendar years of law terms. The new material includes references to Seipp's Index and Paraphrase of Printed Year Book Reports 1268-1535, which is based on the Vulgate edition reprinted here. A powerful research tool, Seipp's Index and Paraphrase of Printed Year Book Reports, 1268-1535 is a free online database of all printed Year Book reports that indexes and summarizes almost all of the cases in this edition. It also guides the reader to later and prior proceedings of individual cases and to all case references in abridgments and other sources. It is difficult to overestimate the importance of The Year Books. As Marvin put it in his Legal Bibliography (1847), these were the "venerable books" from which Littleton, Hobart, Hale and Coke drew "so much valuable ore, melting it into ingots and refining and sending it abroad as the correct coin of the common law" (756). As a series of notes on debates and points of pleadings they are primary sources for our knowledge of medieval common law. The origin of The Year Books is unknown. Maitland believed that the earliest volumes were notes taken by law students in court copied for the use of pleaders in later cases. Holdsworth maintained that The Year Books, like other law reports, were records of cases made by lawyers for their own private use with no thought toward subsequent publication. Though it is not known when the first volumes were compiled, it is clear that the

        Angelique and the Pearl Necklace

Vashon, WA: Foolsgold Studio. 2007. One of 60 copies, 50 of which are for sale, all signed and numbered by the artist / author, Donald Glaister, each book on pages of painted stiffened fabric on which dimensional constructions are mounted, text printed on Zerkall Frankfurt paper. Page size: 15-1/4 x 9-1/4 inches; 40pp. Bound by Donald Glaister: quarter leather made of Nigerian goatskin with wood veneers and cloth over boards, housed in drop spine box made at Book Lab II. The artist tells us that this new book is inspired by hand-made wooden sailboats, citing their custom craftsmanship, exotic materials and a balance of wild adventure and the need to survive it all. The result, he adds, is a happy combination of these elements resulting in a beautiful contradiction: a craft that is serenely graceful yet brutally sound. His book is an homage to the material and spiritual grace of these boats and to sailing.& The text is a two-part poem with studies of the materials used to make sail boats, the spirit of sailing, and the rhythm of the sea. Most of the book's painted, stiffened fabric pages have original collages of painted cloth, wood veneer, brass, cork, linen thread and acrylic paint - all materials used in boat building. The poem is printed letterpress by Jessica Spring at Springtide Press in Scala Sans typeface. The result is an intriguingly beautiful book with images at once reminiscent of ancient Greek or Roman triremes or Viking Drakkar (Dragon) war ships, but at the same time completely contemporary or rather anticipating future designs. The perfections of Mr. Glaister's book construction, not to mention the overwhelming beauty of each page on which a variety of materials are organized and manipulated to make an astonishingly original work of art, directly correspond to the beauty and exacting skill necessary to build a wood sail boat. By deconstructing the idea a "boat" - as well as the very notion of navigating on water - Mr. Glaister has constructed a perfect book.
See an Image.
EXERCISE AT HOME

Santa Fe, NM: Twin Palms Publishers, 2007. First Edition. First Printing.. Hardcover. As New/No Dust Jacket, As Issued.. Santa Fe, NM: Twin Palms Publishers, 2007. Hardcover. As New/None, As Issued. First Edition/First Printing. 48 pages. Collection of color photographs. Now considered a contemporary photography classic. Deluxe Clamshell Box Edition of 50 numbered and signed copies. Should not be confused with the Limited Edition of 1000 copies. The Deluxe Edition is now rare. An austerely elegant production by Luke Smalley, Jack Woody, and Jonathan Stephenson: Oversize-volume format. Pictorial hard boards with titles on the spine, as issued. Photographs by Luke Smalley. There is no text. 10 X 8 inch color print encased in its own black folio and laid into the box. Red-orange cloth clamshell box. Printed on thick coated stock paper in Korea to the highest standards. In publisher's original shrinkwrap. Without DJ, as issued. Presents Luke Smalley's companion volume to his ground-breaking debut, "Gymnasium", an all-new portrait sequence of athletic young men from Pennsylvania. It seems the unlikeliest thing: Exercise as the emblem of masculine beauty and eroticism. The images are cool and rigorously formal in a manner that recalls August Sander and at the same time, hot and unbearably sexy in the manner of Bruce Weber. "Revisits the themes and ideas that resonated in 'Gymnasium'. Investigates the small-town interiors and landscapes which are the settings for his portraits of young athletes. Color photographs, inspired by a more innocent era, depict exercises which combine whimsy with the inexplicable" (Jack Woody). The men are smooth-skinned, blond, blue-eyed, all-American, with close-cropped hair and elaborate drawings of Classical athletes on their hairless chests. They represent the physical ideal that Willoughby and Weaver celebrated in their classic 1947 book on the development of American youth: "Proper muscular exercise, which brings about increased strength of body and improved functioning of all its organs and parts, at the same time lending to develop ideal size and symmetrical proportioning of the skeletal muscles" ("The Complete Guide To Muscular Measurement"). A healthy body is a desirable body, and these subjects are physical perfection in the flesh. Luke Smalley died under mysterious circumstances on May 17, 2009, prematurely ending a career that was on the verge of mainstream recognition. A "must-have" edition for Luke Smalley collectors. This copy is one of the Deluxe Clamshell Box Edition, indicated as such on the Back Limitation Page, and it is very prominently and beautifully numbered, dated (in the year of publication), and signed in blue pen by the photographer: "Luke Smalley 2007". It comes with a 10 X 8 inch original color print that is also very prominently and beautifully numbered and signed in black pen on verso by the photographer. Smalley signed in his cursive handwriting for both the book and the print (instead of block letters). This edition is now sold out and highly collectible. This is one of only two copies of the Deluxe Edition still available online, is still in the publisher's original shrinkwrap, and has absolutely no flaws, a pristine beauty. A rare signed copy thus. 30 color plates, 1 original color print. One of the most brilliant American photographers of our time. A flawless collectible copy. Futuria Fantasia

Graham, 2007 Lettered limited first hardcover edition. Fine book and jacket housed in Fine, black cloth-covered clamshell box. The lettered version is bound in quarter leather with illustrated cloth-covered boards. It is signed on the limitation page by both Bradbury and Forrest J. Ackerman. This is copy "F" of 52 lettered copies. Laid-in is a photograph of Craig Graham with Bradbury, who is holding a copy of the book. This volume contains Bradbury's first works that were printed in the first volume, four issues, of "Futuria Fantasia" a slim, pseudo-magazine that Bradbury, working with Forrest J. Ackerman and collaborating with artist Hannes Bok (1914 - 1964), edited and published himself. A hundred copies, at 10 cents, of each issue were produced during 1939 and 1940. These are reproduced in exact facsimile here, in the original green ink, with many illustrations by Bok. The issues of "Futuria Fantasia" contained many contributions by Ackerman and Bradbury using various pseudonyms. Other contributors included: Robert Heinlein (using the pseudonym Lyle Monroe), Damon Knight, Henry Kuttner, and Bruce Yerke. The book consists of a preface by Bradbury, an interview of Bradbury by Craig Graham., and then the issues of the magazine. Thanks to Graham for saving them from being lost forever! A very interesting glimpse into the past and Bradbury's formative years after High School; too poor to attend college, he hung around the Clifton's Cafeteria Science Fiction Club, thank heavens. Signed on the limitation page by Bradbury and Ackerman. A note from the publisher on the final page explains some details of the production and is signed by Craig Graham and Michael Graham.. Signed by Author(s). 1st Edition. Hardcover. Fine/Fine.

        Al-Mutanabbi Street

Boston. 2012. Artist's book, unique copy with all the original art, 16 leaves, hand- painted and hand-collaged, and hand-lettered in Arabic, which was the setting copy for the edition of the book (10 copies plus 5 reserved for the artists), which is also included, signed by both artists. The 16 original collages are 6-3/4 x 4-/34 inches. The printed edition of the book is 6-7/8 x 5 inches with two small accordion books inserted into pockets on both the front and back cover. Both are housed in custom-made tan cloth over boards clamshell box with tray case for original art. The two small accordion books have no particular order. The artists have written, "This leporello book is a circular narrative of destruction and rebirth, entered by either cover." The text goes on to describe their collaboration, "To produce the originals used for this edition we each used research to arrive at a single image, to which the other responded visually. Each original image was viewed as a vignette, with no thought of sequence. We soon recognized narrative threads, both before and after the bombing."& The original paper collage images, included here with the edition book, were scanned, reordered, and printed in folios on white Rising Stonehenge 24-5gsm using an Epson Stylus Pro 3800 printer and 8- Ultra Chrome K3 ink. Folios were glued to produce a double-sided accordion of 14 pages. Covers are handmade paper with sand on boards. Each of the small accordion books is printed in 10 point Papyrus on Ingres paper. Afraa Gutub, Muhammad Zuhair Gutub and Hatim Sharief provided Arabic translations and calligraphy for the list of some of the dead provided Beau Beausoleil by refugee Moussa Al-Naseri.& This is one of the books contributed to the Al-Mutanabbi Street Project by Artist's Books from Book Arts at the Centre for Fine Print Research, UK in response to the 2007 car bomb that destroyed much of Al-Mutanabbi Street in the old section of Baghdad, home to book vendors, binderies, printers, and cafes. It was a place for intellectuals to gather as well as those who loved the printed word. Certainly not the first attack on books and ideas, it is only one of the most recent. This project is a lament for those killed as well as a "commemoration of the singular power of words."
See an Image.
As New/None, As Issued. First Edition/First Printing. 231 pages. The author's eleventh novel. One of the greatest novels of our time. Deluxe Leatherbound And Slipcased Edition of 100 numbered and signed copies. Except for the Australian, the Deluxe Edition precedes and should not be confused with all other subsequent editions. The Deluxe Edition is now rare. An austerely elegant production by Harvill Secker Press: Regular-sized volume format. Blue goatskin leather binding with gilt titles on the cover and spine, as issued. Text by J. M. Coetzee. Marbled endpapers. Maroon cloth slipcase. Printed on archival stock paper in the United Kingdom to absolutely the highest standards. Without DJ, as issued. "Addresses the profound unease of countless people in modern democracies. An eminent, seventy-two-year-old Australian writer is invited to contribute to a book entitled 'Strong Opinions'. It is a chance to air some urgent concerns. He writes short essays on the origins of the state, on Machiavelli, on anarchism, on Al-Qaida, on Intelligent Design, on music. What, he asks, is the origin of the state and the nature of the relationship between citizen and state? How should the citizen of a modern democracy react to the state's willingness to set aside moral considerations and civil liberties in its War on Terror? How does the state handle outsiders? In the laundry-room of his apartment block, he encounters an alluring young woman. When he discovers she is between jobs, he claims failing eyesight and offers her work typing up his manuscript. Anya has no interest in politics, but the job provides a distraction, as does the writer's evident and not unwelcome attraction toward her. An utterly contemporary work of fiction from one of our greatest writers and deepest thinkers" (Publisher's blurb). Unlike most contemporary writers, J. M. Coetzee has been an "engaged" writer from the beginning, during his anti-Apartheid days in South Africa. He has also always offered the greatest aesthetic pleasure, in prose of the highest literary quality and in his profoundly speculative, anti-didactic, anti-dogmatic, and anti-propagandistic reflections on the major issues of our time. The novel's title is an allusion to Coetzee's idol, Daniel Defoe ("Journal of The Plague Year") while being at the same time, a novel of ideas in the grand tradition of Tolstoy, Dostoyevsky, and Kafka. A "must-have" edition for J. M. Coetzee completists. This copy is Number 49, indicated as such on the Front Limitation Page, and is very prominently and beautifully numbered and signed in black ink-pen by J. M. Coetzee. A rare signed copy thus. Winner of the Lannan Award in 1998, the Jerusalem Prize in 1999, the Booker Prize in 1983 for "The Life & Times of Michael K" and in 1999 for "Disgrace", the first writer to win the most prestigious British literary award twice. Winner of the Nobel Prize for Literature in 2003. One of the greatest living writers. A flawless collectible copy. (SEE ALSO OTHER J. M. COETZEE TITLES IN OUR CATALOG). ISBN 1846551668.
