        Hand Over Hand

[New York. 2006]. One of 15 copies, all on Arches and Hosokawa Ohban papers, each hand numbered and signed by the author / artist / printer, Sarah Plimpton, in pencil on colophon page. Page size: 7 inches x 10 inches; 30pp. Bound by Claudia Cohen: wrappers of gray handmade paper, sewing exposed on spine of red linen thread, also visible in the gutters of text pages, label printed on red Japanese paper with author's name and title, fine. Containing 8 original woodcuts, 7 of which are in black; the 8th is in red. Printed letterpress in Dante by Brad Ewing at The Grenfell Press in New York, this prose poem explores a man-woman relationship always against a background of great natural beauty. The words themselves take on the organic feel one associates with nature writing. Throughout the book, the artist / author juxtaposes sharp images, angular and geometric, that intrigue and refer back to the letters on the printed page - making the soft, intimate words seem all the more piercing.         Society's Corset. Hints to a Fashionable Lady

New York. 2006. One-of-a-kind artist's book, antique salesman sample girdle with net trim, satin ribbon and vintage corset lace; machine stitched, cotton embroidered text, inside corset lined with jacquard flowered patterned corseting material. Size: 7-1/2 H x 6-1/2 W x 13L inches; page size: 5 x 3-1/4 inches; 20 page book (10 sheer pages, 10 silk satin pages), including covers. Bound: grommet binding tied with vintage dyed baby shoelace; housed in custom-made plum cloth clamshell box with title and author and date machine stitched in plum on flesh-colored label set into front cover, fine. The project was built around a vintage Salesman's Pamphlet for Binner Corsets. Illustrated with images taken from the Binner Corsets Salesman's Pamphlet in the form of digital ink jet prints on 19mm satin and 10mm silk chiffon Color Plus Fabrics, machine and hand-stitched pages. The advertising text from the Binner Salesman's Pamphlet is interspersed with quotations from women writers, selected by the artist, to juxtapose the demeaning and objectifying text of the corset manufacturer. For example, "{Any woman can step up the attractive magnetism of her figure, with one of these new, really glamourizing foundations.}" is juxtaposed with a 1974 quotation from feminist writer, Simone de Beauvoir, "By means of [dress] the woman who is deprived of doing anything feels that she express what she is." Once again, Ms. Stone has taken aim at the hypocrisy of the beauty industry and the emphasis on youth and beauty that is pervasive in our culture with a witty and sophisticated look at past cultural trends exemplified by material culture remains. A stunning book. See an Image.

        Magie Blanche

Verdigris Verdigris, 2006. Hard Cover. Rothchild, Judith. 20 of 30 copies. Copies 26 to 29 were hors commerce, and number 30 was given to the Bibliotheque Nationale de France. Rouanet is a well known French writer. The colophon says that the work is a collaboration between the two, who share a deep love for the Languedoc. RouanetÕs text, in French, was inspired by RothchildÕs prints of food and wine and by the spirit of a local restaurant, Le Mimosa. The folio sized pages are loose in a yellow and green box made by Lisa Knoblauch with the front board decorated with mimosa leaves done by serigraph. Printed by Mark Lintott in Vendome Romain type on an Albion press. The prints are protected by tissue guards. 20 pages including the prints. PRI/061207. Fine.
