Pennant and His Welsh Landscapes (Gregynog)

Newtown, Powys: Gwasg Gregynog, 2006 Selected readings from A Tour in Wales (1778-1784) Bound in quarter leather with cloth, titled in gold on the spine and both boards and presented in a purple slipcase. Internally, NO inscriptions etc, (xxv), 133 pp, [4], an edition limited to just 150 copies such as this with another 15 being specially bound, 20 vividly colored woodcuts, several double page, and woodcut end papers by Rigby Graham, who is a prolific and versatile painter, printmaker and illustrator. This is an attempt by him to reflect the contemporary view rather than reproduce that of Pennant, and has compressed time, so that past and present often co-exist within a single image, this of course provokes thought, debate and hopefully delight! Stunning!

The Law of Waters and Water Rights: International, National, State

2006. Farnham, Henry Philip. The Law of Waters and Water Rights: International, National, State, Municipal, and Individual Including Irrigation, Drainage and Municipal Water Supply. 3 Volumes. Rochester: The Lawyers Cooperative Publishing Company, 1904. clxxx, 896; xvi, 897-1893; xiv, 1894-2956 pp. Reprinted 2006 by The Lawbook Exchange, Ltd. ISBN-13: 9781584776895; ISBN-10: 1584776897. Hardcover. New. * Reprint of the sole edition. This well-regarded treatise on water rights examines the relationship between states and nations, the public and individuals, and between individuals. It also shows how these relationships determine water rights. The book has three parts. The principal sections of the first part are "Coast Waters," "Laws in Force on the High Seas," "Boundary Rivers" and "Relation Between the United States and State Governments." The principal sections of the second part are "Municipal Water Supply," "Drainage," "Title to bed and Shores of Water Ways," " Rights of Riparian Owners" and "Bridges, Fords, Levees, and Other Public Improvements." The third part, "Rights between Individuals," discusses the rights of riparian owners in watercourses, such as the right to dam waters of a stream. "[T]he author has properly divided the general subject of waters so as to show the rights depending on these different relations, and not, as is the usual method of division, on the mere characteristics of the body of water on or about which a particular right arises.": J.M.B., Jr., Harvard Law Review 18 (1904-05):77-78.

The Tale Of Three Black Boxes, A Book & Suite Of Prints - Limited / Numbered Edition

Vancouver: Heavenly Monkey. Fine+; Signed by Author. 2006. Limited/Numbered Edition. Hardcover. The Tale of Three Black Boxes is Minegishi's most ambitious publishing project to date, hence the small edition of just 25 sets, with five reserved for distribution exclusively in Japan. The Very Fine book and portfolio (both measuring 8.5 x 7 inches) in each set feature descriptive colophons, numbered and signed by Minegishi (English in the book, Japanese in the portfolio); The core of the project consists of six wood engravings (each about 3 inches square) that tell a sequential narrative about the adventures of a family of three black boxes. This story is told, with spare text, in a single signature book (page detail shown above). The text will be set in 12-point Gill Sans and printed on the HM handpress. The engravings will be printed by the artist on gampi from the studio of Shiho Nao in Japan, and then archivally mounted on the Arches text sheets. The sheets will be sewn in a single signature, and put into a black wrap with the image of three boxes embossed on the front cover, and debossed on the rear. A companion case holds a suite of six prints that delve more deeply into the specific imagery of each engraving (reduced proofs shown to right). The multi-layer prints are color woodcuts that incorporate an engraving, through windows and openings cut into the printed sheet (proof shown above). The textures and colors created with the woodcuts are achieved through multiple inkings and overprinting. The six prints - along with a title sheet, brief commentary by the artist, and colophon - are held loose in a black portfolio case. This & the set's matching slipcase are made by the artist .

        Against the Day

NY: Penguin Press. 2006. The advance reading copy, issued in limited quantities to sales reps and reviewers. Sales rep's name on title page, as is rumored to be the case on all copies, so that any pre-publication abuses could be traced. Some copies had misprinted pages; this copy appears not to. This copy was given by the sales rep to the reviewer Steven Moore, with a note signed by Moore to that effect laid in. Moore has made several small penciled check marks in the margins (and noted a few typos). A bulky book; slightly cocked; near fine. Together with Moore's handwritten notes for the review (4 pages); his typed review (2 pages); and a copy of The Washington Post Book World (November 19, 2006) in which his review, "The Marxist Brothers," appeared, with small changes from the typed version. A scarce advance copy. We have seen few copies offered for sale, and none since the book first came out; the publisher's attempts to limit its distribution seem to have largely succeeded. A notable copy: Steven Moore is one of the foremost scholars of postmodern American literature, author of two books on William Gaddis and, according to the Post, working on a history of the novel. . For example, "{Any woman can step up the attractive magnetism of her figure, with one of these new, really glamourizing foundations.}" is juxtaposed with a 1974 quotation from feminist writer, Simone de Beauvoir, "By means of [dress] the woman who is deprived of doing anything feels that she express what she is." Once again, Ms. Stone has taken aim at the hypocrisy of the beauty industry and the emphasis on youth and beauty that is pervasive in our culture with a witty and sophisticated look at past cultural trends exemplified by material culture remains. She is a graduate of the Columbia MFA program and is the 2005 recipient of the Transatlantic Review/Henfield Foundation Award; her fiction has recently appeared in Conjunctions, Granta, Zoetrope, Oxford American, and The New Yorker. " "A dazzling debut, a blazingly original voice: the ten stories in 'St. Lucy’s Home for Girls Raised by Wolves' introduce a radiant new talent. In the collection’s title story, a pack of girls raised by wolves are painstakingly reeducated by nuns. In 'Haunting Olivia,' two young boys make midnight trips to a boat graveyard in search of their dead sister, who set sail in the exoskeleton of a giant crab. In 'Z.Z.’s Sleepaway Camp for Disordered Dreamers,' a boy whose dreams foretell implacable tragedies is sent to a summer camp for troubled sleepers (Cabin 1, Narcoleptics; Cabin 2, Sleep Apneics; Cabin 3, Somnambulists . . . ). And 'Ava Wrestles the Alligator' introduces the remarkable Bigtree Wrestling Dynasty -Grandpa Sawtooth, Chief Bigtree, and twelve-year-old Ava - proprietors of Swamplandia!, the island’s #1 Gator Theme Park and Café. Ava is still mourning her mother when her father disappears, his final words to her the swamp maxim 'Feed the gators, don’t talk to strangers.' Left to look after seventy incubating alligators and an older sister who may or may not be having sex with a succubus, Ava meets the Bird Man, and learns that when you’re a kid it’s often hard to tell the innocuous secrets from the ones that will kill you if you keep them. Russell’s stories are beautifully written and exuberantly imagined, but it is the emotional precision behind their wondrous surfaces that makes them unforgettable. Magically, from the spiritual wilderness and ghostly swamps of the Florida Everglades, against a backdrop of ancient lizards and disconcertingly lush plant life - in an idiom that is as arrestingly lovely as it is surreal - Karen Russell shows us who we are and how we live." - dust jacket flap.. TIME

Ostfildern-ruit, Germany: Hatje Cantz Publishers, 2006. First Edition. First Printing.. Hardcover. As New/As New Dust Jacket.. Ostfildern-ruit, Germany: Hatje Cantz Publishers, 2006. Hardcover. As New/As New. First Edition/First Printing. 160 pages. Exhibition monograph presented as an Artist Book. One of the most beautiful books on the art of Christian Boltanski. The title comes from his site-specific installation, "Zeit", which serves as the exhibition's starting point. The First Edition. Precedes and should not be confused with all other subsequent editions. The First Edition is now rare. A brilliant production by Christian Boltanski: Oversize-volume format. Blue hard boards with titles embossed on cover and spine, as issued. Art by Christian Boltanski. Essays by Aleida Assmann and Ralf Beil. Printed on thick coated stock paper in Germany to the very highest standards. In pictorial DJ with titles on the cover and spine, as issued. Published on the occasion of the exhibition of the same name held at the Institut Mathildenhohe Darmstadt from November 12, 2006 through February 11, 2007. Presents new work as well as previous work in a new light. The emphasis Boltanski places on the most fragile objects, particularly photographs, to evoke our "struggle against death" (his phrase) is the central idea behind his sublime art. As such, Boltanski's work is not "about" death but "against" it, through art rather than polemics. His obsession with death is often mistakenly seen as acceptance or even embrace of it when as Boltanski himself repeatedly says, the role of memory is to insist on the sanctity of human life, that whenever we remember those who have died, we remember their lives, not their death, and that memorial, archive, and elegy, which all pause Time, ultimately affirm Life. At the same time, Boltanski acknowledges, more than any other living artist, that death is a fact of life, and that even as we struggle against it, we intuitively realize from a series of "death experiences" throughout our lives (the end of childhood, which Boltanski regards as the first death we experience in life; the loss, not necessarily the actual death, of a loved one, which is why we call it "the end" of a romance, relationship or marriage; a life-threatening illness; severe physical or psychological violence inflicted upon us) that denying the reality of death is more dangerous than our fear of it. "I am for an art that is sentimental. I want to make people cry. Art should create emotions. The task is to create a formal work that is, at the same time, recognized by the spectator as a sentimentally charged object. Everyone will recognize their own history, their own world, which is more felt than perceived. The artist is someone who holds a mirror and those who look in the mirror recognize themselves but each one sees a different image" (Christian Boltanski). A "must-have" title for Christian Boltanski collectors. This copy is very prominently and beautifully signed in black pen on the title page by Christian Boltanski. It is signed directly on the page itself, not on a tipped-in page. This title is now highly collectible. As far as we know, this is the only signed copy of the First Edition/First Printing available online and is in especially fine condition: Clean, crisp, and bright, a pristine beauty. A rare signed copy thus. One of the greatest living artists. A fine collectible copy. (SEE ALSO OTHER CHRISTIAN BOLTANSKI TITLES IN OUR CATALOG). ISBN 3775718257.

        Hand Over Hand

[New York. 2006]. One of 15 copies, all on Arches and Hosokawa Ohban papers, each hand numbered and signed by the author / artist / printer, Sarah Plimpton, in pencil on colophon page. Page size: 7 inches x 10 inches; 30pp. Bound by Claudia Cohen: wrappers of gray handmade paper, sewing exposed on spine of red linen thread, also visible in the gutters of text pages, label printed on red Japanese paper with author's name and title, fine. Containing 8 original woodcuts, 7 of which are in black; the 8th is in red. Printed letterpress in Dante by Brad Ewing at The Grenfell Press in New York, this prose poem explores a man-woman relationship always against a background of great natural beauty. The words themselves take on the organic feel one associates with nature writing. Throughout the book, the artist / author juxtaposes sharp images, angular and geometric, that intrigue and refer back to the letters on the printed page - making the soft, intimate words seem all the more piercing.
