SACRED ART OF CAPPADOCIA Byzantine Murals from the 6th to 13th Centuries

Book Description: ERTUG & KOCABIYIK, 2006. Hardcover. Book Condition: Brand New. Dust Jacket Condition: Brand New. 1st Edition. The architectural and artistic patrimony of Cappadocia is unique in the world. This book seeks to heighten the reader's awareness of the artistic wealth and architectural diversity of Cappadocia, focusing in particular on the murals that adorn its churches and sanctuaries. Nineteen structures are presented in this volume. They were chosen mainly for the quality of their murals some of which rank among the most important treasures of the Byzantine and Medieval heritages. The superb photographs of Ahmet Ertug meticulously capture the interiors of these wonderful churches in astonishing detail, many of them in remote and all but inaccessible locations. These extraordinary images are accompanied by an authoritative and highly readable text by Catherine Joliet-Levy of Paris University, a respected specialist with thirty years of research and publications on the cultural heritage of Byzantine and Medieval Cappadocia. The result is a splendid book that guides the reader towards a deeper appreciation of the region and a better understanding of its art and history. Designed in landscape format (35x 48cms), the book has 192 pages. There are 141 color plates, some presented as double page spreads and 57 pages of text. Each image plate has a descriptive text. Hardbound covered with Japanese cloth, presented in a special case.         The Tale Of Three Black Boxes, A Book & Suite Of Prints - Limited / Numbered Edition

Vancouver: Heavenly Monkey. Fine+. 2006. Limited/Numbered Edition; Signed by Author. Hardcover. The Tale of Three Black Boxes is Minegishi's most ambitious publishing project to date, hence the small edition of just 25 sets, with five reserved for distribution exclusively in Japan. The Very Fine book and portfolio (both measuring 8.5 x 7 inches) in each set feature descriptive colophons, numbered and signed by Minegishi (English in the book, Japanese in the portfolio); The core of the project consists of six wood engravings (each about 3 inches square) that tell a sequential narrative about the adventures of a family of three black boxes. This story is told, with spare text, in a single signature book (page detail shown above). The text will be set in 12-point Gill Sans and printed on the HM handpress. The engravings will be printed by the artist on gampi from the studio of Shiho Nao in Japan, and then archivally mounted on the Arches text sheets. The sheets will be sewn in a single signature, and put into a black wrap with the image of three boxes embossed on the front cover, and debossed on the rear. A companion case holds a suite of six prints that delve more deeply into the specific imagery of each engraving (reduced proofs shown to right). The multi-layer prints are color woodcuts that incorporate an engraving, through windows and openings cut into the printed sheet (proof shown above). The textures and colors created with the woodcuts are achieved through multiple inkings and overprinting. The six prints - along with a title sheet, brief commentary by the artist, and colophon - are held loose in a black portfolio case. This & the set's matching slipcase are made by the artist .

        A Scanner Darkly

New York: Doubleday and Company. 1st Edition. Hardcover. Very Good/Very Good. FIRST EDITION in original dust jacket. The basis for the 2006 film of the same name, "A Scanner Darkly is the novel that offers the most thorough conspectus of the nature of postmodern society, with emphasis on the social." (Christopher Palmer, Philip K. Dick: Exhilaration and Terror of the Postmodern). It acts as a mirror for society at the time, and a reaction to the drug abuse of the counterculture movement of which Dick was very much apart. Though having garnered only a cult following while living, Philip K. Dick is a science fiction giant today, and A Scanner Darkly is one of his classics. "As his characters careen in a drugged-out haze of police fetishism through Santa Ana, Irvine, and other O.C. cities that don’t get mentioned on The O.C., Dick stages the pure, blank horror of suburban life in the fake paradise of SoCal. The ugliness of the planned community, a utopian experiment gone wrong, is everywhere in that book..." (Annalee Newitz, Wired Magazine). New York: Doubleday and Company, Inc., 1977. Octavo, original beige boards with black lettering on spine. Book fine, spine of dust jacket slightly faded. A very good copy.

Eternal Butrint: A UNESCO World Heritage Site in Albania

Butrint Foundation. Hardcover. 1905680015 Dust jacket condition: Like New. Massive book. Due to weight, no foreign orders or domestic priority shipments accepted without prior arrangement as to shipping costs, which will exceed our usual rates. Located at a crossroads in the Mediterranean, the site of Butrint is a microcosm of changes in the region over the last 3,000 years. Few UNESCO World Heritage Sites command such scientific interest - and few are more richly documented. Set in a marshy landscape between an inland lagoon and the busy straits separating Corfu and Albania, Butrint boasts well-preserved, photogenic remains from most periods. The site has been occupied since at least the 8th century BC, and Virgil recounts how the Trojan exile, Aeneas, landed here before he founded Rome. Subsequent travellers have all recognised an elegiac beauty in the site. This book charts the development and change of Butrint, using the archaeological remains and environment to paint a grand, complex picture worthy of its millennia of history. It is illustrated with exceptional paintings by Grand Tourists like Edward Lear, the magnificent photographs of Luigi Ugolini, the recently discovered archives of the Communist period, and the Butrint Foundation's rich documentation. The book concludes by analysing how tourists are bringing economic hope to Albania as they discover the myth of Aeneas in its unspoilt landscape. 256 pages. Your order will be on its way by the next business day! . Fine. 2006.

London, England: Penguin/Penguin Designer Classics, 2006. First Edition. First Printing.. Hardcover. As New/As New Dust Jacket.. London, England: Penguin/Penguin Designer Classics, 2006. Hardcover. As New/As New. First Edition/First Printing. 365 pages. Artist Book. One of the most stunningly beautiful Artist Book interpretations of the classic ever created. Limited Edition of 1000 numbered copies. The edition is now very scarce. An elegant production by Paul Smith: Oversize-volume format. Text by D. H. Lawrence. Art by Sir Paul Smith. White cardboard box. Printed on archival acid-free stock paper in the United Kingdom to absolutely the highest standards. In transparent Plexiglas ("Perspex") box, which serves as the book&#39;s outer DJ. Published on the occasion of Penguin Book&#39;s 60th Anniversary, "Lady Chatterley&#39;s Lover" is one of five classics that the publisher issued in a Limited Edition by commissioning five of the world&#39;s most important artists in their respective fields. The other titles are Gustave Flaubert&#39;s "Madame Bovary", F. Scott Fitzgerald&#39;s "Tender Is The Night: A Romance", and Fyodor Dostoyevsky&#39;s "Crime and Punishment" and "The Idiot" (he is the only novelist to be honored with not one, but two, masterpieces in the Series). In terms of design, "Lady Chatterley&#39;s Lover" is the most delicately beautiful in the Series. While Penguin&#39;s idea was to make these classics collected as a complete set, there is no question that Sir Paul Smith&#39;s contribution has become the single most popular title of the Fab Five. Smith chose the flower symbol (the illicit lovers garland themselves with flowers during lovemaking to express their joy and oneness with each other and with Nature) for his romantic (as opposed to erotic) interpretation: "A cloth jacket is wrapped loosely around the hardback, with the design of flowers which are found in the book and lettering stitched into the cloth, including the Penguin logo on the spine" (Publisher&#39;s blurb). Sir Paul Smith is the single most celebrated fashion designer in the British Classic tradition. His fashion empire includes shops in London as well as Paris, Milan, New York, Hong Kong, Singapore, Taiwan, the Philippines, Korea, and Kuwait. He has an incredible 200 shops in Japan alone, where he has a massive following. The ultimate book-as-object, the literary classic-as-work-of-art, worthy of this auspicious celebration and posterity. A "must-have" title for D. H. Lawrence and Paul Smith collectors. <B><i> This copy is Number 880, indicated as such on the Front Limitation Page. By special arrangement with Penguin, Sir Paul Smith numbered and signed only the first copy. The Limited Edition is now highly collectible. This is one of very few copies still available online and has no flaws, a pristine beauty. A rare copy thus. </b></i> One of the greatest writers of all time, re-interpreted by one of the finest living artist/fashion designers. A flawless collectible copy.       Gottingen, Germany: Gerhard Steidl Druckerei Und Verlag, 2006. First Edition. First Printing.. Softcover. As New/As New Dust Jacket.. Gottingen, Germany: Gerhard Steidl Druckerei Und Verlag, 2006. Softcover. As New/As New. First Edition/First Printing. 48 pages. Collection of photographs presented as an Artist Book. Now considered a contemporary classic. The First Edition. Precedes and should not be confused with all other subsequent editions. Published in a very small and limited first print run as a softcover original only. The First Edition is now very scarce. An austerely elegant production by Robert Frank and Gerhard Steidl: Regular-sized volume format. Pictorial softcovers with photographic reproduction in front and titles on the cover and spine, as issued. Photographs by Robert Frank. There is no text. Printed in quadrotone on thick coated stock paper using four-color matte inks and Polaroid spot varnish in Gottingen, Germany to absolutely the highest standards. In matching wraparound pictorial DJ slipcase that is open on both ends, as issued. Presents and reproduces Robert Frank&#39;s Polaroid work, as assembled by the photographer in a notebook-style Artist Book (the original notebook remains in Frank&#39;s possession). Steidl deserves credit for ensuring that this Facsimile Edition retains as much as possible the subtle visual and tactile beauties of the original. "In November, 1991, Robert Frank went to Beirut on a commission to photograph the city&#39;s devastated downtown in the aftermath of the Lebanese Civil War (1975-1990). He also made Polaroids of the city and its environs which, on his return home, he stowed away in his studio. It was only many years later that he considered those images again, and used them to create a sketchbook&#39;s worth of Polaroid collages. A facsimile of his notebook, &#39;Come Again&#39;, shows how Robert Frank has worked almost exclusively with Polaroids in recent years, exploring the collage and assemblage possibilities of the instant photograph" (Gerhard Steidl). Once again, Robert Frank&#39;s images of a devastated land capture in a rigorous documentary format a universal human tragedy as well as his own personal turmoil and pain. "He can portray real pain and capture profound depths of human emotion better than almost any other photographer; indeed, better than almost any other artist in any medium" (Martin Parr and Gerry Badger). An absolute "must-have" title for Robert Frank collectors. <b><i> This copy is very prominently and beautifully signed in black ink-pen on the title page by Robert Frank. The photographer is notoriously averse to any kind of signing, but he made a very rare public appearance in New York City in conjunction with the book&#39;s publication. He signed copies for some people who waited patiently in line then abruptly and inexplicably left before he could sign the rest. This title is now highly collectible. As far as we know, this is the only signed copy available online, is still in the publisher&#39;s original plastic wrappers, and has absolutely no flaws, a pristine beauty. Signed Robert Franks are rare, command as much as $20, 000 online even if they are not in fine condition, and will always keep their value. A rare signed copy thus. </b></i> 24 quadrotone plates. Three of Robert Frank&#39;s books were selected as among the greatest photography books in "The Photobook". One of the greatest photographers of the 20th century. A flawless collectible copy.       Wales: Gwasg Gregynog Press, 2006. Hard Cover. Fine. Hard Cover. 1 of 150 copies in quarter leather. An additional twenty copies were printed in a special binding. This copy is out of series, and there is a label attached to a free front endpaper stating that this copy is a display copy and not for sale. This is a particularly beautiful book from this press.         Pennant and His Welsh Landscapes (Gregynog)

Newtown, Powys: Gwasg Gregynog, 2006 Selected readings from A Tour in Wales (1778-1784) Bound in quarter leather with cloth, titled in gold on the spine and both boards and presented in a purple slipcase. Internally, NO inscriptions etc, (xxv), 133 pp, [4], an edition limited to just 150 copies such as this with another 15 being specially bound, 20 vividly colored woodcuts, several double page, and woodcut end papers by Rigby Graham, who is a prolific and versatile painter, printmaker and illustrator. This is an attempt by him to reflect the contemporary view rather than reproduce that of Pennant, and has compressed time, so that past and present often co-exist within a single image, this of course provokes thought, debate and hopefully delight! Stunning!

        One Eye Less

New York. 2006. Artist&#39;s Book, one of 15 copies, all on Arches 88 paper, signed and numbered by the artist / author, Sarah Plimpton. Page size: 14-5/16 inches x 10-5/16 inches; 20pp. Each of the 20 pages has original silkscreen prints by the artist / author in bold colors. The text is set in Monotype Bodoni and was printed in gray by the artist with the help of Brad Ewing at The Grenfell Press. Bound: loose as issued in original plain buff wrapper, housed in gray cloth clamshell box by Claudia Cohen with title and artist&#39;s name in gild on black morocco label on spine, fine. Ms. Plimpton&#39;s six poems are surrounded by strong shapes in a black, tan, light and dark gray, orange, light and dark brown, light and darker blue, and a magical red. Circles intersect with rectangles and squares, jagged edges, and forms with circular shapes cut out, intersect with perpendicular lines. What the mind&#39;s eye sees is interpreted in words and images by this wonderful artist. The tension created by the strong blocks of color sandwiching much small circles, or the blanks of white left in circular cut-outs are matched by the compressed texts, i.e. "Vertigo / the eye bent / inside / held tight / a railing / on the edge of looking down." An interior vision is made exterior and the reader, luckily, gets to share. Certainly this is one of Ms. Plimpton&#39;s strongest books to date. The rich colors are immediately compelling and pull in the viewer / reader. <br>See an <A HREF= >Image.</A><br>

FORTESCUEÕS HISTORY OF THE BRITISH ARMY: COMPLETE SET - 15 VOLUMES(including six map volumes bound in one binding.)

      - 2006 HB N&MP Reprint of Original EditionPublished Price £585 This work, which is a classic, covers the history of the British Army from the Norman Conquest down to the Cardwell reforms of 1870, when commission by purchase was finally abolished. The very last chapter of the work looks at the British Army up to 1914.Naval and Military Press have reprinted this valuable and timeless work in its entirety, faithful to the originals in all respects. The contents of the individual volumes are as follows:Vol. I - from the Battle of Hastings to the end of the Seven YearÕs War (1713). Includes such battles as Bannockburn, Crecy, Agincourt, Flodden, the battles of the English Civil War, Dunkirk Dunes, Tangiers, and the battles during MarlboroughÕs campaigns. The volume also traces the development of European Armies, infantry, cavalry and artillery, and the specific changes in Britain during the period.Vol. II - covers from the 1713 to 1763 and includes the Jacobite Rebellion of 1715, the scandals of the reign of King George I, the war with Spain and the dispute over the Austrian Succession, and the Battles of Fontenoy and Culloden. It also covers the situation in India and the contest for mastery with the French. The expansion into North America is described and the differences that arose between the French and the British, together with WolfeÕs campaigns in North America. The volume includes much material on the development of the British Army, and the problems that arose with regard to recruitment and conditions of service at that time.Vol. III - continues the story from 1763 to 1792. The continuing problems in North America are joined by the growing pains of Empire. The loss of the Americas is covered in detail, as is the state of the British Army, especially in the light of CornwallisÕ disastrous contributions to the American failure. Developments in India follow, and again Cornwallis makes a contribution to failure.Viol IV Part I - Deals with the French Revolution from 1789 to the Treaty of Amiens in 1798. It includes British operations in the Netherlands, the West Indies, South Africa and Ireland. The whole European area is described with the French and Allied nations included. Naval matters are also included, and the campaigns in Egypt and the Mediterranean are treated in detail. At the same time a close eye is kept on developments within the British Army.Vol. IV Part 2 - continues the theme of the previous part, and goes up to 1801. The examination of the British Army is also expanded, and an important appendix gives exact details of British Army pay.Vol. V - the period 1803 to 1807. Detailed treatment of the situation and operations in the East Indies and Ceylon, the West Indies, Europe and the Mediterranean. There are important chapters on conditions at home, and the air of war-weariness that was appearing. Finally, there is a description of operations in South America.Vol. VI - 1807-1809. The Napoleonic War continued, with further details of operations in Egypt and in the Mediterranean. The Swedish situation is covered, the British expedition to Copenhagen and operations in Portugal. The Spanish theatre is also examined in fine detail.Vol. VII - 1809-1810. This volume is concerned mainly with these two years in the Peninsula, but also covers the expedition to the Scheldt, and operations in the East Indies, Mauritius and Java.Vol. VII - 1809-1810. MapsVol. VIII - 1811-1812. This volume covers two more years of the campaign in the Peninsula, together with the War with the United States. There are details of many battles, including Barosa, Badajoz, Fuentes de Onoro, Albuera, Ciudad Rodrigo, Salamanca and others of fame during the Peninsula War.Vol. IX - 1813-1814. The French invasion of Russia is followed by descriptions of the situation in the Peninsula, and in North America. Throughout developments in Europe are covered so that the picture of the war for the reader in these years is complete, and second to none in detail. Vol. X [Attributes: Hard Cover]

8vo; Full leather, 14 x 21 cm, 160 pp + commentary. The Prato Haggadah (Spain, ca.1300) is an unfinished illuminated manuscript of 85 leaves, written on fine calf parchment. Folios 1-53 are written in a square Sephardic script and folios 54-68 are written in a square Italo-Ashkenazic script, using a different ink. The illumination of 30 pages is virtually complete. 58 are unfinished, with preparatory drawings and possibly some gesso and color, 50 have text only and the remaining pages are blank. Many of the pages have illuminated initial word panels, comparable to illuminated initials in Christian or secular manuscripts. Throughout, illustrations accompany the text, such as the depiction of the four sons, and illustrations of matza and maror (bitter herbs). Preparatory drawings depicting the story of Noah and the flood appear at the end of the manuscript. Margins are replete with fanciful drawings of hybrid creatures, imaginary birds, drolleries and climbing vines. The codex is especially fascinating because it demonstrates the making of a manuscript in the Middle Ages, enabling us to view its illumination after the text was written: the preparatory drawings, the laying down of gesso in order to cushion the gold leaf, the application of gold and silver leaf, and ultimately the application of pigments. The skill of the artist is of a very high order, both in the preparatory drawings and in the completed pages, whose brilliant colors look as fresh today as when they were applied. Printed and bound as an exact replica of the highest quality of the 13th Century illuminated manuscript in appropriate leather boards and parchment-like leaves. Limited edition of 250 copies. A treasure to behold.

        Three Cups of Tea

(NY): (Viking). (2006). The advance reading copy of the inspirational and controversial account of Mortenson, who, in response to kindnesses bestowed on him by locals when he was lost in Pakistan after an unsuccessful ascent of K2, vowed to return to that village and build a school -- a project that led to his founding the Central Asia Institute and to an ongoing effort that resulted in the building of, reportedly, more than 170 schools (mostly for girls) in impoverished regions of Pakistan and Afghanistan, and to Mortenson&#39;s repeatedly being nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize. The hardcover edition sold only 20,000 copies; the paperback sold over four million copies in more than 40 countries and stayed on The New York Times bestseller list for more than four years, until it was revealed, first by author Jon Krakauer and later 60 Minutes, that Mortenson and Relin had taken liberties with the narrative and, in Mortenson&#39;s case, possible liberties with his financial relationship to the CAI. This advance reading copy is signed by Mortenson and also by David Relin, who at one point claimed sole authorship of the book, saying it was published with Mortenson as co-author over his objections. The promotional text boasts of a planned 6-city author tour: in the four years before the controversy hit, Mortenson&#39;s itinerary included more than 500 speaking engagements. Relin committed suicide in 2012. Fine in wrappers and custom clamshell case. This is the only advance copy signed by both that we have encountered. . First Edition. Softcover.
