The Near Woods. Images and Design by Charles Hobson

San Francisco, CA: Pacific Editions. 2006. One of 26 lettered copies, each lettered (a to z) and signed in pencil by the author, Barry Lopez, and the artist, Charles Hobson from a total edition of 26+ copies which includes a few artist proof copies. Page size: 10 by 7 inches; 10pp; with double-page fold out containing a montotype image with pastel on German Etching paper reproduced as a digital pigment print that has been hand-colored with pastel and acrylic paint by the artist, titled "dream bear," and another another single page image on the verso of the fold of a standing bear, the two images signed in pencil by Charles Hobson. & Bound by Charles Hobson and Alice Shaw in original paper over boards bound in, the paper a reproduction of a drawing used to establish land grants in California, "Dosino del Rancho San Miguelito," circa 1841, reproduced with the permission of The Bancroft Library, is on a tan ground with images of trees, bears, rocks, housed, water, and roads all in tans and grays with blue and red and brown criscrossing the image which extends across both panels, buff label printed in black with title and author's name, new. A small vignette from the paper, that with the bear on two legs reaching for something in a tree, is collaged on second half-title and . The text was printed letterpress by Jerry Reddan who also printed 165 copies in 2005, bound in wrappers and not signed by either the author or artist, and without the images by Charles Hobson. At that time, these 26 lettered copies were left unbound for this special edition from Pacific Editions.& Barry Lopez' story was first published in "Seneca Review" in 2000. It opens, "A bear came last night. It came down through the trees into the clearing around the house, most certainly in the bright moonlight." With this, the reader / viewer enters that elusive and magic space between the wild, deep woods and the civilized space of the humans. And, we are left wondering about the nature of knowledge and man's relationship to other living creatures on this planet. The bear, as imagined by Mr. Hobson, is certainly feral; but by placing him against a page of script which he almost totally obliviates, we wonder what he knows that we don't. A haunting story well served by the design and images of Charles Hobson.
See an Image.
Twenty Poems of London (Designer Binding)

Tern Press limited edition designer binding 2006 - Limited edition: 30 copies only, this one numbered 25, and signed by the late Mary and Nicholas Parry of Tern Press. Gurney's poems capture the essence of early 20th century London, and the black and white photographs that accompany the poems reflect the past, and in particular the changing moods of the capital city at that time. This is a designer bookbinding and the bookbinder, Stephen Conway, President of Designer Bookbinders, gained inspiration from both the poems and the way they were presented in the book. Quarter-leather binding with leather fore-edge strip, painted edges. Leather-jointed paste-paper doublures. Vellum panels with images and lettering underneath, present the title, 'London', across the front and rear boards. The overall effect is a counterpoint to the black and white images in the book. Signed and dated by Conway 2011, the book is contained in an attractive suede lined half-leather solander box: red leather, with red/white veined marbled papers, embossed title on box spine. LEROY GRANNIS: SURF PHOTOGRAPHY OF THE 1960S AND 1970S - DELUXE SIGNED, LIMITED COLLECTOR'S EDITION

Benedikt Taschen Verlag, Koln, GERMANY 2006 - 278pp, profusely illustrated in color and b&w. Text in English, German and French. Limited to one thousand copies only, this signed and numbered first edition of Taschen's amazing Leroy Grannis tome is more than likely the most lavish surf photography book produced to date. "This collection, drawn from Grannis' personal archives, showcases an impressive selection of surf photographs-from the bliss of catching the perfect wave at San Onofre to dramatic wipeouts at Oahu's famed North Shore. An innovator in the field, Grannis suction-cupped a waterproof box to his board, enabling him to change film in the water and stay closer to the action than other photographers of the time. Equally notable is his work covering an emerging surf lifestyle, from surfer stomps and hoards of fans at surf contests to board-laden woody station wagons along the Pacific Coast Highway. It is in these iconic images that a sport still in its adolescence embodied the free-spirited nature of an era-a time before shortboards and celebrity endorsements, when surfing was at its bronzed best". Sold out long before publication, it lovingly reveals the kinder and gentler California surf scene of over a quarter century ago in hundreds of vintage images taken by one of the pioneers of the field. Mickey Dora, Greg Noll, Dewey Weber - they're all here! A pristine copy NUMBERED AND SIGNED by Leroy Grannis still shrinkwrapped in the publisher's printed shipping carton, as issued. SLAVA MOGUTIN: LOST BOYS

New York City, NY: PowerHouse Books, 2006. First Edition. First Printing.. Hardcover. As New/No Dust Jacket, As Issued.. New York City, NY: PowerHouse Books, 2006. Hardcover. As New/None, As Issued. First Edition/First Printing. 144 pages. The photographer's breakthrough debut collection. One of the best erotic art photography titles of our time. Limited Slipcased Edition of 50 numbered and signed copies. Should not be confused with the regular trade edition. The edition is now very rare. A brilliant production by Slava Mogutin, Nicholas Weist, and Nick Vogelson: Oversize-volume format in oblong shape. Pale gray linen cloth boards with red titles embossed on the cover and spine, as issued. Photographs by Slava Mogutin. Introduction by Dominic Johnson. Essay by Octavio Zaya. 8 X 10 inch color print encased in its own protective plastic sleeve and laid into the book. Matching pale-gray linen cloth slipcase. Red satin ribbon marker. Printed on thick coated stock paper in Italy to the highest standards. Without DJ, as issued. Presents one of the most daring collections of male nudes in recent memory. Slava Mogutin's greatest accomplishment is that at a time when sex pictures on the Internet have very quickly become mechanical, predictable, and boring, his photographs of Russian and European youths are unabashedly erotic and also moving without trying too hard to be either. "Provocative yet iconoclastic, his work transcends the conventions of male nude photography, confronting the viewer/voyeur with a raw style and new sensibility. A cross between pop culture and marginal kink, 'Lost Boys' is a poetic and raunchy journey into different obsessions and fetishes of the cosmopolitan urban youth culture. Crimean rasta boys, Russian wrestlers, military cadets, German skinheads, and football hooligans are among the subjects of these incendiary but intimate portraits" (Publisher's blurb) . These youths may be "lost", but they are incredibly sexy, make Terry Richardson's models look timid and shy (or maybe Mogutin is just very persuasive) , and know exactly what it takes to arouse the most jaded viewer who thinks he has seen it all (all of Slava Mogutin's models are eighteen and older) . A brilliant debut, this is an absolute "must-have" title for Slava Mogutin and erotic art photography collectors. This copy is one of the Limited Slipcased Edition, and is very prominently and beautifully numbered, signed, and dated (in the year of publication) in various color markers on the title page by Slava Mogutin. Mogutin created a riotously beautiful, semi-abstract dazzle of colors from a pair of hands, a fist, and the "peace" sign. Each signature of the Limited Slipcased Edition is distinctive; no two are exactly alike. Laid-in is an archival color print, also very prominently and beautifully numbered, titled, and signed in silver marker on verso by the photographer: "Joey Sniffing S. M. 07". This edition sold out shortly after publication and is now highly collectible. As far as we know, this is the only copy available online and has absolutely no flaws, a pristine beauty. Its value has already gone up and will only continue to do so over time. A rare signed copy thus. 125 plates, 1 original color print. One of the most brilliant living photographers. A flawless collectible copy. (SEE ALSO OTHER COPY OF THIS TITLE IN OUR CATALOG). ISBN 1576873455.

        BETWEEN THE TWO

Tucson, AZ: Nazraeli Press, 2006. First Edition. First Printing.. Hardcover. As New/No Dust Jacket, As Issued.. Tucson, AZ: Nazraeli Press, 2006. Hardcover. As New/None, As Issued. First Edition/First Printing. 76 pages. Collection of color photographs. One of the most beautiful productions by Nazraeli Press. Deluxe Clamshell Box Edition of 60 numbered and signed copies. Should not be confused with the Limited Edition. The edition is now rare. A magnificent production by Todd Hido and Chris Pichler: Oversize-volume format in wide oblong shape. Black hard boards with white titles embossed on cover and spine, as issued. Photographs by Todd Hido. Poem, "Energy", by Raymond Carver appended at the end. 11.5 X 14.5 inch archival color print encased in its own handsomely produced hardboard folio. Matching clamshell box. Printed on thick uncoated stock paper to the very highest standards. In publisher's original cardboard protective box. Without DJ, as issued. Presents Todd Hido's fourth, and in many ways, most hauntingly beautiful collection. His three previous collections, "House Hunting", "Outskirts", and "Roaming", are now considered contemporary classics. Apart from the fact that Hido continues to mine the desolate terrain he has explored in the past, he also finally shows some of the most poignant and moving female nudes anyone is ever likely to see. "Weaves photographs of abandoned houses together with portraits of anonymous models in motel rooms that have obviously seen better days. Todd Hido's work has been widely exhibited throughout the United States and Europe, and is included in the Permanent Collections of such museums as The Cleveland Museum of Art, The Los Angeles County Museum of Art, The Museum of Fine Arts Houston, and The San Francisco Museum of Modern Art" (Publisher's blurb). Cutting-edge museums are not the only admirers of Todd Hido's work. No one is surprised that Michael Kenna's landscape work has an enormous international following. Todd Hido's landscapes (of places and now, the body) are not instantly or conventionally pleasing to the eye. His subjects are loneliness and decay, and their immanent transcendence, which gradually dawns on the viewer, the uncanny photographic equivalent of the works of Raymond Carver, Sam Shepard, and Wim Wenders: An abandoned house and a dream-like female nude are enigmatic yet sublime metaphors for the broken soul. Hido has clearly struck a chord because he has been incredibly successful and commands a remarkable cult following. A "must-have" edition for Todd Hido collectors. This copy is Number 46, and it is very prominently and beautifully signed in black ink-pen on the title page by Todd Hido. SACRED ART OF CAPPADOCIA Byzantine Murals from the 6th to 13th Centuries

Book Description: ERTUG & KOCABIYIK, 2006. Hardcover. Book Condition: Brand New. Dust Jacket Condition: Brand New. 1st Edition. The architectural and artistic patrimony of Cappadocia is unique in the world. This book seeks to heighten the reader's awareness of the artistic wealth and architectural diversity of Cappadocia, focusing in particular on the murals that adorn its churches and sanctuaries. Nineteen structures are presented in this volume. They were chosen mainly for the quality of their murals some of which rank among the most important treasures of the Byzantine and Medieval heritages. The superb photographs of Ahmet Ertug meticulously capture the interiors of these wonderful churches in astonishing detail, many of them in remote and all but inaccessible locations. These extraordinary images are accompanied by an authoritative and highly readable text by Catherine Joliet-Levy of Paris University, a respected specialist with thirty years of research and publications on the cultural heritage of Byzantine and Medieval Cappadocia. The result is a splendid book that guides the reader towards a deeper appreciation of the region and a better understanding of its art and history. Designed in landscape format (35x 48cms), the book has 192 pages. There are 141 color plates, some presented as double page spreads and 57 pages of text. Each image plate has a descriptive text. Hardbound covered with Japanese cloth, presented in a special case. INTERMA is the exclusive distributor for Ertug & Kocabiyik Publications in USA and Canada, WORLDWIDE orders usually ship within 2 business days.

The Tale Of Three Black Boxes, A Book & Suite Of Prints - Limited / Numbered Edition

Vancouver: Heavenly Monkey. Fine+. 2006. Limited/Numbered Edition; Signed by Author. Hardcover. The Tale of Three Black Boxes is Minegishi's most ambitious publishing project to date, hence the small edition of just 25 sets, with five reserved for distribution exclusively in Japan. The Very Fine book and portfolio (both measuring 8.5 x 7 inches) in each set feature descriptive colophons, numbered and signed by Minegishi (English in the book, Japanese in the portfolio); The core of the project consists of six wood engravings (each about 3 inches square) that tell a sequential narrative about the adventures of a family of three black boxes. This story is told, with spare text, in a single signature book (page detail shown above). The text will be set in 12-point Gill Sans and printed on the HM handpress. The engravings will be printed by the artist on gampi from the studio of Shiho Nao in Japan, and then archivally mounted on the Arches text sheets. The sheets will be sewn in a single signature, and put into a black wrap with the image of three boxes embossed on the front cover, and debossed on the rear. A companion case holds a suite of six prints that delve more deeply into the specific imagery of each engraving (reduced proofs shown to right). The multi-layer prints are color woodcuts that incorporate an engraving, through windows and openings cut into the printed sheet (proof shown above). The textures and colors created with the woodcuts are achieved through multiple inkings and overprinting. The six prints - along with a title sheet, brief commentary by the artist, and colophon - are held loose in a black portfolio case. This & the set's matching slipcase are made by the artist .

        A Scanner Darkly

New York: Doubleday and Company. 1st Edition. Hardcover. Very Good/Very Good. FIRST EDITION in original dust jacket. The basis for the 2006 film of the same name, "A Scanner Darkly is the novel that offers the most thorough conspectus of the nature of postmodern society, with emphasis on the social." (Christopher Palmer, Philip K. Dick: Exhilaration and Terror of the Postmodern). It acts as a mirror for society at the time, and a reaction to the drug abuse of the counterculture movement of which Dick was very much apart. Though having garnered only a cult following while living, Philip K. Dick is a science fiction giant today, and A Scanner Darkly is one of his classics. "As his characters careen in a drugged-out haze of police fetishism through Santa Ana, Irvine, and other O.C. cities that don’t get mentioned on The O.C., Dick stages the pure, blank horror of suburban life in the fake paradise of SoCal. The ugliness of the planned community, a utopian experiment gone wrong, is everywhere in that book..." (Annalee Newitz, Wired Magazine). New York: Doubleday and Company, Inc., 1977. Octavo, original beige boards with black lettering on spine. Book fine, spine of dust jacket slightly faded. A very good copy.

Eternal Butrint: A UNESCO World Heritage Site in Albania

Butrint Foundation. Hardcover. 1905680015 Dust jacket condition: Like New. Massive book. Due to weight, no foreign orders or domestic priority shipments accepted without prior arrangement as to shipping costs, which will exceed our usual rates. Located at a crossroads in the Mediterranean, the site of Butrint is a microcosm of changes in the region over the last 3,000 years. Few UNESCO World Heritage Sites command such scientific interest - and few are more richly documented. Set in a marshy landscape between an inland lagoon and the busy straits separating Corfu and Albania, Butrint boasts well-preserved, photogenic remains from most periods. The site has been occupied since at least the 8th century BC, and Virgil recounts how the Trojan exile, Aeneas, landed here before he founded Rome. Subsequent travellers have all recognised an elegiac beauty in the site. This book charts the development and change of Butrint, using the archaeological remains and environment to paint a grand, complex picture worthy of its millennia of history. It is illustrated with exceptional paintings by Grand Tourists like Edward Lear, the magnificent photographs of Luigi Ugolini, the recently discovered archives of the Communist period, and the Butrint Foundation's rich documentation. The book concludes by analysing how tourists are bringing economic hope to Albania as they discover the myth of Aeneas in its unspoilt landscape. 256 pages. Your order will be on its way by the next business day! . Fine. 2006.
